Hi B,
Yes, I know that, and the pinion diameter for the spool shaft should be little smaller than the 505. I did check with Alan T on it.
I was referring to the main gear height. Ill post pics of the difference...hopefully tonight.

Yes it does, that's why I said to keep it moving ;)

Just to clarify,
The proposed gear set is similar to this:
I proposed to Alan that the area where the drags sit should be deeper to allow a 5 CF drag stack as:

based on my conversation with Gene. What do you guys think?
That will be a customize gear. It will be for this site only. I will have to have 50 sets to make this special gear happens. Quote from: Bryan Young on April 16, 2013, 08:14:59 PM

I personally would rather have the hex gear. The drag range for 5+1 carbontex or hex HT-100 are comperable and the HT-100 is cheaper and more available.
Ron
I think we need a new thread for this customize gear set. What do you think?
If this will be a customized gear set, it's not worth it guys. Just a suggestion for the gear set offered that way you have an option of a 3 stack or 5 stack.

Hi Alan,
What pattern did you use as a reference? Newell gears, Penn Gears, Accurate Gears, or on of your own design?
Neal, the main gear will fit. The pinion, I cannot remember, was the 500/501 ID larger than the 505/506? If it's larger, then it would work. If it's smaller, then you will need to boar it out and then it would work.
By the way, what is the ETA on the gears?
Bryan
The 500 jigmaster pinion gear will fit the 505. Its a little lose on the spool shaft, but definitely usable. I like mine tight though.
The main gear is the same.
You could also make the 505 pinion work in a 500, by making some little modifications.
We like modifications around here, Neal, as you'll find out soon enough ;D
enjoy your stay, by the way.

Hi Bryan,
We will use the 505 as a reference to make it fit with 500/501. The 500/501 pinion ID is lager than 505. Currently, the resource is doing the mass production of the 113H, and he is working on the 114H. Then, it will be the 500/501.
My resource does not like to rush into anything because he always wants to make sure his workmanship is prefect before anything else.
Probably not with the metal washers that are available. We would need to go to a thinner material and if that, a stronger and therefore more expensive material. I will talk with Lee if he can get some cut.
Thank you to sal and bryan for the info. I am still in for two sets and i'll give the 500 pinion a shot. Neal.

Not to hijack this thread, but I'm working on a 5+1 carbon fiber plus metal washers drag kit that will fit the normal Jigmaster 500/501 and Penn 112H gearset. We just got the materials and are going to the cutter today. We are cutting 100 sets. We will soon try them out on older steel gears and a new brass gear set to see how they do. I'm hoping for a solid 15# of drag with max of 20# given the ears on the drag set doesn't give our or the gears strip out. Will keep you guys advised.
Hey bryan, sounds very exciting. Will the falt washers fit inside the hex drop-in that Keta made?
Bob
No they won't. This set will be like what is in the reel already but will see if we can fit 10 washers in the gear instead of 6 (5 metal and 5 carbon fiber).
So theoretically #25 of drag right? Nice!

Theoretically, yes, but those drag ranges will be at your risk. I'm more talking reasonable drag range that will not damage the reel.
Bryan,
If it works as you plan count me in for 5 sets... I've been using my 112H for striper fishing lately and would love to set them up for wireline as well. I've tried the 112h hot rodded to the nines, but I just don't have the drag range. When I put on the umbrella rigs they take a little line out on turns because the drag isn't there.
Keep us posted on the progress,
Dom
Bryan, sounds good. If you get it going I'd take three sets when they become available.
Thanks, Bob
Alan: Don't forget my set LOL
Gene
Hi all,
As many of you know that Dawn from Smooth Drag is coming out with the Newell gear set, which can fit PENN 112H or JM 500/501.
Smooth Drag gear set is made in the USA, and it is only $35.00 a set. I believe that it is a good price for a gear set that is made in SS 304.
I will still process my JM 500 gear set in SS 316 project with couple features (those features are from Dom (boardway)). I can't state what those features are. When it comes out, I will state those features.
If any member wants to cancel his order on my PENN 500 gear set, please post it here.
Thank you all.
Thanks,

Alan,
I will hold off on purchasing anything until I see your gears or you release what the features are. You two have saved the world!!

I am going to roll the dice and assume that whatever you and DOm have cooking will be worth it. At the least be a limited edition collectors item that will be worth a fortune one day and pay for my son's tuition (no pressure guys)
I'm ALL over this. I'm in with these and the one Dawn is bringing out. I figure I can have a drag stack of cf washers ready to go in these and instead of having to clean old grease off the gears I can just pop in a new set per-loaded with the drag washers. ;D ;D ;D. I've got a couple buddies with 500's that now I know what to get them for their birthday, Christmas...etc.
Bob
My Grandson's Birthday is in August & my Birthday is in Sept. Well that's 2 less sets I have to buy.

I still want one of your sets. I am confident that I'll be happy
Hi all,
How are you all? Here is the latest info I have for this JigMaster 500 high speed gear project.
After few weeks of continuous R&D on this gear set, I am very happy to inform you all that we have achieved to make few adjustments to make this gear set in true 5.0:1 with helical cutting. My guys are busy testing its strength under stress and making sure the main or pinion gear will not round off. So far, it looks very promising.
It might take another month or so to have the first 15 sets available, and 3 or 4 months before the second batch gear sets are available.
If any of you really need this JM 500 gear set in hurry, you can check out Smooth Drag's on its JM 500 gear set (http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=7440.0 (http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=7440.0)).
If anyone is no longer interested in my JM 500 gear set, and your name is on this thread, please let me know that you would like to cancel the order. Therefore, I won't bug you when the order is ready to be shipped.
Thanks,
--Alan
Hi Alan, I'm very excited to get one of these to start. I see you will only be making 15 sets to start with. I will need a total of 3 sets but would like only one to start and will wait for the other two when the mass production starts. Just want everyone to get a crack at these. Let me know and thanks for the update.

Hi,
We just finished up the 114H first 20 sets. We are going to start making the initial testing JM 500/ 112H gear set. If everything is turning out perfect, we will start the first 20 sets 112H first. It will be a month before I will have the first 20 set batch.
If you can not wait for that long, you might want to check with Dawn at Smooth Drag if she has the 112H from her resource ready to go.
Thanks,

Hi there,
I don't think I will be able to make it on that date. We are taking little more time on the pinion gear because it requires a very precision cutting on it. My guys are working very hard to try to make it 99.9% prefect for a true 5:1 gear set. The earliest for the first 20 sets will be around the end of August. Please note that there will be 2 model (original and an extra 1mm mills in the main gear) on this JM 500 gear set.
You know my gear set is good and smooth like silk.
Did you know that the 114H gear we just made was so smooth and quiet that you won't even know it has gear in the reel?

I told you in the beginning that I was not in a rush for the gear sets & it has nothing to do with the price. At this time I have been doing Daiwa Reels mostly 27H & 50 H. The 50 H is a true workhorse of a reel.

Hi guys,
I know that a lot of people are waiting on this Jigmaster 500/112H gear sets. My factory is working tirelessly. As you all know that the Jigmaster 500/112H gears (main and pinion) are very small, and there is not really a lot of room to make it 5:1 ratio, but we are making it. We have to make sure 100% that every sets is clean, work well with other parts of the reel, and good strength on all gear teeth. Therefore, it might take couple more weeks. We don't want to rush it too fast and bring out any crappy gear sets.
I can guarantee that any gear set I am going to sell or am selling, it will be the best in the market right now.
Sorry for the delay guys.....
Thanks,
--Alan

We are still working on its improvement at this moment. We should have the first 20 sets done very soon.
No money will need to be sent to us yet because we don't have the gear set on hand yet. I am not a believer on keeping other people's money on hand while they are waiting for my product.

Finally, the JigMaster 500/501 or PENN 112H true 5:1 gear set (20 sets) will be in FL by the end of next week. Here is a picture of it.
Please note that the pinion does not have the ring on in the picture. Don't worry, it will be on it.
My resource has been testing it. This gear is much stronger and smoother than the Accurate gear set.
Enjoy!!!!
hey alan c.! am i on the first 20 list? ;D
:D
Looks like a winner!
Very, Very nice Alan. I cant wait. ;D
Bob
Will these fit the 505 and 506?
These should fit the Penn 505 and 506. The difference is that you will have greater space between the sideplate and the gear. You may need to fill it with an extra washer.
I want a set please.
Alan,
If there is any left from the first run I would like to get a set If not when will the second run commence?
Thanks,

So far, I don't know if there is any left from the first run (20 sets). I will have better idea after I receive the shipment. If a person I send a pm to, and he does not reply within 3 days, then I will post it here and let everybody knows how many I have left on hand. It will be first come first server at that time.

Bryan,
regarding the fitment, will the pinion fit and when you mentioned that washer is needed where would it goes? Do you meant in the drag stack?
I'm only speaking of the main gear. I'm not sure of the pinion fitment as I am not aware of the design constraints.

This Jigmaster 500/501 will not work on 505/506 at all because the ID diameter is not the same as 505/506.
Here it goes again.
There are only 18 sets available, and they are on their way to FL right now.
Please note that there are 10 sets custom gear sets (it milled 1mm deeper inside the main gear), and there are 8 sets regular.
I will send out an email to some members on their order. One set per member on the this first run sample sets.
Thanks,
--Alan
Alan,
I am almost certain that the 505/506 use the same drag washers, these gears should fit. The factory gear sleve has a different thread pitch but the diameter is the same. I think the pinion might need a little work but it should not be a big deal.
Of course, I could be out to lunch. ;D

I believe that the 500 ID pinion (spool shaft hole) is smaller than the 505. Therefore, my pinion gear will not fit the 505 spool shaft.

Yes, but the other way around ;D. These Jigmaster 500 gears should work nicely in the 505/506.
The pinion is usually a little loose, but from knowing the way your machinist cuts these gears, I believe they will be almost perfect ....very little movement on the 505/506.
bottom line; the 500 gear set will work on the 505/506.
Those 18 gear sets will be here on Monday.
Please send me a PM or email if you want to know if your name is on my list and let me know if your order is for original or custom main gear.
Guys, I can't wait to see these gears. My guys told me that it is amazing smooth, quiet and great strength. I guess that it is worth to wait and make sure everything is prefect......

Hi guys,
For member who is waiting for the mass production run (Dec 2013), the price will be $42.99 (original) and $45.99 (custom) each set until 11/15/2013.
I will offer this price to Alan Tani's website USA member only.
If you are interested, please add your name in this thread.
Thanks,

I will buy 2 sets from production run of original/standard.
Hi guys,
Just a reminder, if you are buying the custom gear, which is deeper, it was designed so that you could purchase SmoothDrag's SS metal washer set of 5 washers plus the Daiwa Million Carbontex Kit and have a 5+1 stack in your Penn 500. This was designed way before I developed the my drag set.

Yes, because the 316 stainless steel will eat up the brass yoke, and it will make a mess.
Personally, I'd fish it until it needed replacing, but that's just me.

Here is an updated.
Sal tested the latest gear set in the 112H, and it did not do good, but it did really good in the Jigmaster 500/501. So, this 5:1 gear set will NOT work in the Senator 112H.
However, I am going to make few main gear in 4:1 ratio (as same as the main gear uses in the 112H or Jigmaster) in stainless steel. It will work with original 4:1 pinion gear by PENN.
Sal, can you post the test result on the 5:1 gear set, please?
Thanks,

Works for me. Actually, I would prefer the 4:1 gear for my 112h. But I've got two jigmasters and the 112h sitting here with all the available upgrades just waiting for a set of SS gears so I can complete this project. (getting antsy I guess).
All due respect to Sal and Alan, I know they've put in a lot of time and effort to try and make this thing work, and I appreciate that. But there is simply no way I'm going to push these reels to 20lbs. of drag in a normal every day fishing situation. More like 10-12 lbs. tops. If I need 15-20 lbs., I've got reels for that.
Again, thanks for the effort guys, but you've already exceeded my expectations.
Ed
Yes you're right Ed, there are reels out there that will get you to 20lb, this isn't for everyone. The Jigmaster was already a nice reel , it is now a much better reel. I personally like what we've done very much.
Sal
I have to agree with this. In fact, I's say these are still fine in the 112H under reasonable drag levels. I have seen several references of the new 112HN Tib kit being called the White Sea Bass special. I caught my first WSB about 30 years ago and have hooked into many, many fish since then. They are an absolute blast to katch but they do not require 25#s of drag. I have caught lots of legal fish with a Mitchel 300 and a size 4 hook! They do however, like to run at you and that means you need to get line in fast. For the WSB application when fighting WSB I'd say the 5:1 gear ratio is more important than mamoth drag numbers.
Well done to all.
Ron
I just built a 112H with original steel main gear and Bryan's 5 stack washers. I got the .5mm drag washers from Dawn. I was out of that material.
The little reel pulled 28 lbs. of smooth drag. I was truly amazed. I have 2 sets of the eBay SS gear sets but I don't think they will hold up so I didn't use them.
It's for a customer that loves these little reels and I might have to get one myself to prove to my Avet loving son what they will do..!!

Hello Bigcatpat, Alan Chui will send you the main gear the pinion and the spacer, anything else you will need to get on your own. If you're using these gears in your 505, you might need another metal washer or two on top of the stack.
This is not a big deal, you could use the older metal washers on top or some from Bryan..
How you like your drag it's up to you, most of my reels start very soft, cranking the handle doesn't move the spool when the star is backed all the way.
Some like to set theirs differently, they do want a little drag at first, when the star backed all the way.

Hi guys,
I have received a lot of emails on the Jigmaster 5:1 gear set kit.
I have not received the shipment yet. I know that the 9/0 pinion gears are done for the past 2 weeks, and the Jigmaster's main, pinion gears are done last week. At the final stage, while testing the pinion gear ring, it turned out that the pinion ring has been little tighter. Therefore, we are working on the new rings to address that. I will have an updated tomorrow.
Thanks,
--Alan
Bula Alan,
Hey, when the new jigmaster pinions come in, I'd like an additional full set, plus at least 2 - 9/0 gear sets.
AND.. with all these, are you still bringing out the 4:1 gear sets we can use in the 112h?
I'd like 2 of those too please ;)

Sorry, man. I sent you an email. This will not work in the 112H.
Alan, I don't believe that is a correct statement. This will be the strongest gear set available for a 112H. It is just that the max drag will be less that that of a Jigmaster due to the larger spool diameter. I intend to eventually replace the gears in all but 1 of my 112Hs with your gears and a stronger drag.

You are correct, but there are few people will just try to use 20# of drag, therefore, I don't recommend to use it in the 112H. It will be hard for me to stand behind the product. I will try to do the best tho. I hope you know what I meant.

Hey Alan! The site you created, the page doesn't load right on my part
Marc..
Try http://mkt.com/pro-challenger-llc (http://mkt.com/pro-challenger-llc)
Nope, when I choose the custom set, it goes into freeze mode and can't see the basket
Marc..
It works on my PC and on my phone. Ok. I will send you an invoice via PayPal.

Got it Alan, is shipping included in the price?
All shipping is free within the USA.
Cool 8)
Thanks again Alan
Marc..
All guys,
I just got back home. I will start send out those replacement pinion gear with spacing sleeve parts. No main gear will be replaced.
Sorry for the delay.
Thanks,
--Alan
I bought a jigmaster 500 and I'm going to put stock steel gears in my 112HN. When you have the replacement pinions ready for shipping, put me on the list please. No rush, I'm busy with other things.
I will need one please

Doc, BP's gears and pinion are helical. The BP pinion will not work with the stock Penn gears. You would have to have BP's main and pinion.
You probably already know this. ;D Bob

Yes, but it's really nice of you to point that out.
I bought the original set for my 112HN. Since the BP gears won't work in those reels, I'm going to build a jigmaster. I'm not giving up!
Come and get it now.
This gear set kit is also available via Smooooth Drag and Brian's Fishing Supply in Hawaii.
still no love for the 112h?
I am in for one set
Speedwagon2
A new version 5:1 gear set will be tested by Sal to confirm if it will work for Jigmaster 500/501 and 112H.
Here is a picture.
Alan....is the ring on the pinon a press fit?

Yes it is.
I know you have lot of pokers in the fire, but when is the 500 gear going to get the new drag?

Is 4:1 or 5:1 you talking about?
I've seen the 4:1, but the 5:1 would be nice also.
