Title: Upgrading gears in my penn 710z
Post by: Marcq on April 02, 2016, 06:40:37 PM
I really like this little reel except for the 3.6:1 gear ratio and the 23" line retrieve. I heard I while back that the gears from the 712Z  4.1:1 would fit in the 710 but never actually saw it being done , what was the gain obtained and if it would affect the laying of the line on the spool. It was also mention that the gain was marginal.I had the main gear already but not the pinion, ordered that and took the opportunity to do a clean up at the same time, it was due

Gear side by side, you can tell the difference

The 4.1:1 has just one extra tooth  :-\

Pinions, the smaller one is the 712 one less tooth

Main gear

Went to the field to see if it was laying the line properly and it did like the stock gears

So the combination of the 712 gear and the bigger spool of the 710, it gained 5" in line retrieve from 23" to 28", I don't call that marginal at all, I'm glad I did it and look forward to see how the smaller pinion will react in a tough situation

Mark, I never even gave it a thought about doing something similar, you got too much time in your hands ...just kidding. ;D
You have just uncovered a good secret, especially with parts getting scarce on these.
Please report back after fishing it.
Good job!

Sal

That's a Nice reel, I learned something new.I always thought the 710 & 712 had the same inner parts.
Very weak bail on 710 & 712z. My 710z kept closing with anything heavier than 2 oz on the cast.
The mitchell  bail-less kit on your reel is the way to go. would make a good striped bass reel.

Good idea Marcq. I'll have to give that one a try. Did you machine the rotor yourself? I'm machining a couple of them similar to relief on the Van Stahl. Its taking a while as all I have to use is a 5C collet indexer in my mill.
The VS is on the bias. Looks cool though!
Have a great evening,  ..  Lou

Great job for a drill press and jig.  Milling them on the bias is a bugger. Best way for me has been to put a wooden plug in the rotor for support. Keep up the good work.

Now, go make more!

Nice gearing upgrade indeed. I am curious about the finish though. Looks like you stripped the paint off, but did you coat the reel with anything afterwards?

After polishing it, surprisingly that stuff, did it once when I made it(couple years back) and yesterday. Holds up well in a salty environment, I did a 650ss the same way

I apologize for being late to this thread & since the photos aren't accessible, I don't know what I missed or maybe read wrong.

I just wanted to ask... is the upgrade of the 712 gears into the 710 a simple swap out, or was there further alteration involved?
Title: Re: Upgrading gears in my penn 710z
Post by: George6308 on October 16, 2017, 12:34:56 AM
Simple swap. You have to replace both gears.

Marc and Sal, if you're talking about the 650SS knob, it hasn't been fished here yet, and can easily ship where its mojo is needed. :D

Does the same principle apply to a 710 greenie, in theory?

Anyone not seeing the pictures because of PB greed....   Read to the bottom of this thread:   http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=22119.30

Tried the Chrome extension thingy just now & it worked OK.  Running Chrome 61.0.3163.100, with two extensions: 1) Photobucket Embed Fix 0.0.3; and 2) Photobucket Embedded Image Fix 0.6.

Frank

I am using Chrome, and with the  Photobucket Embed Fix 0.0.3 extension, I was able to see PB photos up to about a week ago, before seeing the "third party" error.   I added the 0.6 extension and see all photos again.  There are similar fixes for Firefox.

Joe,
The pics in this thread need no fix, as with all others I redo. The embed fix is just a temporary solution in my opinion.

Darren,

I agree that the embed fix is likely only a temporary solution.  The programmer of the extension figured out how PB was recognizing the 3rd part access, and found a way around it.   The extension was updated October 1st (version 0.6 for Chrome).  Some time last week I noticed that my original PB embed fix was no longer working, so I installed this latest version, and can see everything again!  https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/photobucket-embedded-imag/ogipgokcopooepeipngiikdkpmcpkaon?hl=en-US

This is a cat and mouse game, and we will see who wins in the end.  Probably there are some classic AT posts using PB pics that will never be fixed, or will be, but have not yet.  In the long run, it is better for everyone to avoid using PB altogether, and use AT.com to host the photos, or another site like IMGUR that is not likely to be monetized.

Cheers,

/Joe
