Title: newell pinion compatibility
Post by: Swami805 on July 31, 2016, 01:18:25 AM
Have a s540 5.5 and the pinion was frozen onto the spool shaft. I tried everything and cut down the pinion to get the bridge off. I have a pinion for a 332-3 and a 220-5. Will these work?  Thanks

Don't think so.  5.5 means 5.5 : 1   So that is what you need.  Even then , pinions almost need to be matched to the main gear in my experience.

Absolutely the pinion for the 5:1 is the same as the 5.5.

Thanks, If it alters the pick up rate I can live with that. Good info as usual.

No, it won't fit. The teeth of the gears are different as the main is larger on the 500s as compared to the 300s.

Does anyone know the tooth count for a 5.5 pinion from a 500 series newell?  I switched a 5.5 set of gears to a 4.6 in a 540 about a year ago.  All my pinions are in one container.  if I have a tooth count, I can find the 5.5 pinion forSwami805.

Both the 5:1 and 4:1 are twelve point pinion gears.  The teeth on the 4:1 are cut straight while the 5:1 are cut with a curve. The only gears that are different on the 500 series is the gear set for 3.2:1.
