Title: Attempting my first build....P21XN Jiggy!
Post by: pjstevko on October 22, 2018, 12:35:25 AM
I'm about to attempt my very first build....an Extra Narrow Jigmaster!

I got a set of red Cortez plates, the last P21XN red frame /silver spool from Randy, a kit of SS internals from Pro Challenger, a shift lever from Maureen at Mystic Parts, a star from Jurelometer (Dave) and a beautiful pearl fluorescent T-bar knob from Lou. The only thing left to acquire is the actual handle which I have a few leads on.....

Having never even taken one apart I'm going to be asking a ton of questions in this thread and maybe via pm so please bare with me.........I'll start out with a very easy question....

Do I just follow the standard Penn 500/501 schematics?

Any and all tips on doing one of these builds will be greatly appreciated!

Pj

Hi PJ,
I'm in the same boat as you, I've been collecting reels and parts recently and I'm doing my first build this week. Good luck buddy!

If you can put together a jigmaster you shouldn't have any problems, the only thing that's really different is the 2 dogs. Shims on the spool shaft and might be a few tweaks to the drag stack to get the height right, minor adjustment stuff. You should be fine.

With an early Chinese doner , my reel went together in about 30 minutes......

I've never even put together a regular Jigmaster! I'm way out of my comfort zone!

The nice part of those is you don't have to fool with the dog mounted on a bridge screw. The older penns are all the same basic design, it's easier than a 4/0 if you've done one of those. You'll be fine

Might be asking for your help! Or sending you a big box of parts :)

The majority of the parts should be here by the end of today so I might start laying everything out tonight........

Do I need to coat the inner plates and internal gears with Penn grease?

Here's to hoping I can figure this all out!

Yes. Oil bearings. TS321, Corrosion X, Speed X, Rocket Fuel or even Abu oil if that's all you can find but NOT Quantum Hot Sauce. It gums, and has been soundly cursed by the Forum and some techs here won't service a reel with red sludge in it. Cals or Shimano drag grease in the stack or leave dry until you get some. Penn blue or marine wheel bearing grease, brushed lightly on all other interior surfaces: both sides of bridge, inside of plates, sides of spool flanges, clicker assembly, and particularly, take apart the reel foot, grease underneath, and grease plate / frame interface before you assemble. If you don't have a grease gun fitting, wipe a bit of Blue on all screws before you insert to keep salt out of screw holes and galvanically melding your SS screws in aluminum forever. Don't forget clamp screws too. Wax spool with car wax before you line it. If you are loading braid, but on a short bit of mono or flaxwrap around arbor (after waxing) to keep braid from slipping on spool under tension. Grease sleeve, handle, handle nut interface and handle nut threads. Oil handle knob in any hole  / crevice you can see.

I too recently built my first from a pile of parts, been doing minor service/repair for some time, but custom builds are different . one thing I will mention, sorry if it's been said, but I didn't see it, is to do initial assembly dry without oil or grease to make sure of fit and function. especially true with custom parts. I found myself having to take assembly apart, clean off lube and remove metal, change shims/drag metals, or adjust/change parts to make it work. you will be fine, and I myself feel I am becoming a better reel mechanic with each next build. as they say, it is addictive!

YES! it crossed my mind to say dry fit and I didn't- custom or no its  a great idea on any reel you haven't done before.

PJ, I found videos to be very helpful with my first couple of builds. YouTube has a good number of videos on Jigmasters.

I believe I have all the parts on hand or enroute so it's time to start piecing this thing together on the dry run....

I still need to buy all the oils, grease and lubes mentioned earlier for the final fit...... Any suggestions on where to buy small amounts?

Thanks again to all of you who offered up parts from your personal stashes of goodies and those of you who sell high quality custom parts which set these reels apart from the norm..... This truly is a special place!

I tried to do a dry fit assembly today........this is tougher than I thought!

I need to buy new tools

I realized I still need parts so I placed another order of parts from Mystic Parts.... I probably should have just bought a donor reel for $20 instead of buying all new parts......

Someone might be getting a big box of parts to assemble from me if I try this again and I still don't have all the parts after my next order arrives....

A donor reel's a good idea, but the new stuff you bought will be in better condition.

PJ, I am sure that I am more mechanically challenged than you, but in an emergency, I have been able to put reel together using the excellent tutorials that you will find on the homepage of this website. There is even a specific forum for Jigmasters.  if you lay all your parts and tools out in front of your computer I would bet that you can put this thing together in 30 minutes or less.

I'm just super frustrated and feel like I need 8 hands to do this......plus I don't want to scratch everything up by doing it wrong...I already scratched the inside of one of the plates trying to get the shift lever spring in place....maybe I should just drive over to Jonathan or Fred's place and have them help me....

PS That rod worked great with my fathers old #49, its a great combo...thanks again

I feel for you, PJ.  I read about everything that Sal and Mo do and think, "Sure, I can do that..."   it is clearly laid out and illustrated, why not?   Still there is a substantial gap between being an armchair reel-repair study, and a reel builder.

Still, I encourage you to take some time, if you have it.  There is a short distance between failure, self-doubt, and successful accomplishment.

If you can get in the right "mind set"(i.e., meet & beat the challange), then may be best to assemble it, then disassemble, cover most parts with grease( includes scratches).

You have a stock jigmaster? Beat on one of those first and get the hang of it. That eccentric seems tricky until you get a feel for which way the spring goes.
I'm good doing penns and newells, pretty much everything else I send out. I feel your pain. Sometimes you just gotta stay in your lane. These aren't too bad though

Ok I've taken a few deep breaths and am back at it but stand by for questions galore......

Question one...

Where in the drag stack should the metal keyed washer with the larger hole go?

No stock jigmaster to screw around with which is part of the problem...

It looks to me like someone has mixed a washer to a larger reel into your kit...no way that washer is going to key to the gear sleeve. :-\

Tried again with the same results.... FRUSTRATION!!!!!!!!!

I'm gonna bring all the parts to Alan's house the night before the big 10yr anniversary fishing trip and we'll put it together so I can learn. He'll spool it up with 50# braid and I'll break it in the next day.....

If you want to fish that reel on the anniversary trip, that is really pushing it close and you guys might be drunk by that time ;D.
If no one close to you could help, send it over and I'll take care of it.
Your cost will be shipping charges only.

Slow down, breathe and walk away for a bit!!! Be patient and it'll come together. If your drags are greased and you put grease in the screw holes things should hold together better to ease assembly!!!
