Lets discuss what we want to bring, what we really should bring, what we should get to bring, what we need to borrow to bring and what we can bring to loan.
Is a Penn 4300SS to small for calico bass?
As of now I plan on bringing.....
Avet
Modified EX 2 speed (with a EX backup/loaner) on a 6-1/2" Seeker 60# rod
HXJ Raptor on a 6-1/2' Seeker 40# rod or a spiral wrapped rod on a seeker Hercules blank.
JS 2 speed on a 7' Seeker 30# rod
MX 2 speed on a 7' Seeker 30# rod
SX on a 15# or 20# rod
Penn
Modified Surfmaster 100 on a 7' Lamiglass 15# rod
99 width Jigmaster on a 30# rod
Fathom 25N (4:1 now but I will bring the factory gears for YT on iron) on a 30# rod
113H "Tank" on a 6-1/2' Seeker 40# rod
349H on a 40# rod
I have several other reels I can bring for those that need them, including single and 2 speed Avets. I doubt we will need any 30Ws, 50s or 70s.
Keta, thanks for starting this thread... :)
this is what i'll probably bring;
25# MXJ(40# dyneema backing) on a 700ML SX(40# spectra backing) on a G-270H-8' CT
30# SALD35-2SP(60# spectra backing) on a 800M ??? TN16A(60# spectra backing) on a GR-700-M
40# MK-8II SEa(50# spectra backing) on a 20-60 ??? OC40(mono) on a 700MH
50# MK-10II SEa(60# spectra backing) on a 760L ??? GOSA 20000SW(80# spectra backing) on an OceanXtreme 7655
Dropper Loop 113H 4/0(now more special, 80# Dyneema backing) on a 765M
Jigging set-up BX-500N on a ???
Back-ups
25# CS550(mono) on a PSX-808
30# 112H(mono)
40# PG541(mono) on a CARBW765L
to be modified/updated as I learn more... :)
you can also refer to American Angler's tackle recommendation, which i think is more detailed. sorry SOA... :D :)

Thanks Keta! Now my wife is laughing at me as I just tore up the garage and found my old Seeker S870-7' and my Okuma Catalina CT30C...Now I need a reel clamp and a rod tip...She keeps saying "Is it June yet!!!"
I think I'm OK on rods n reels now that I read your posts. I'm sure I went overkill on hooks and jigs, but I was signed up on a different trip & just read the list they gave for suggested tackle on a 6-8 day trip.
Will Calico's hit 4-5" swimbaits? 1-2oz. jigheads??? I think I have a bunch of that stuff for shallow water kelp fishing off the central coast. What kind of Jigs to bring?
Calicos will nail swim baits just like a large mouth bass or a NW black rock fish. I am a light tackle fisherman and so I've never considered it but lots of people use up to 2oz heads . I'm way more comfortable with a 1/2-3/4 oz with a 4-5" swimbait. Sometimes they aren't interested in anything that doesn't have a curly tail so I'd bring some grubs that work with the jig heads. For bait I like size 1 or 2 hooks and will go down to 4 if we have pin heads or the bass are finiky (please Lord God no on the pin heads.)
Lee, your bringing a lot of gear!! Which worries me because I wasn't planning on all that and you have more experience than me.
I am bringing a Newelled BayMaster for live bait bass on a 8' 20# All Star and a SealineX 20SHV / Millionaire 300CX-V for artificials on an 8' All Star California Calico Special.
For YT I am bringing a Newelled Albacore Special and a YellowTail special. The Yellowtail has 4:1 gears, double dogs, stainless sleeve and Alan's handle, the Albacor Special will have all of Alan Cs goodies assuming he gets then done on time. I will leave it 4:1 with a steel gear for live bait work. Besides, it worked for the old So Cal fisherman way back when. Both of these will be on Yellow Po's unless I can swing something better before the trip.
I may bring a grouper special on an Okuma halibut rod just in case we get stuck bottom fishing. Those slow gears suck to reel up empty but sure put a hurtin on the fish during the fight.
The heaviest I am bringing is my Newelled Tuna Special with all the fixins including Lee's drag insert. It is loaded with 60# and I have it bolted to a Yellow Po.
I'm bringing several pounds of plastics and even more jigs of various sizes. I'm from the Pacific North West and so I have a lot of Point Wilson darts, it is actually cool to catch a salmon off of Point Wilson with a Point Wilson dart. I don't know if anyone has caught a yellowtail with a PWD, but I intend to.
I'm open to suggestions for anything else.
Ron
Well didn't I just stir up a hornets nest. Don't ever tell your little girl what gear your taking fishing and not include the rig you made up for her Christmas present! So I'm also bringing a Penn 85 on a Penn 30# Mariner rod, I'll also bring my Shimano 300 spinner on a 8ft Shakespeare rod just in case we do have pinners and the bass want to be fly lined to. Sometimes even the slickest conventional can't cast with a baby anchovie and a hook at the end of the line.
Ron

I'm a gear whore ;D and I want to test some of my modifications. I also expect to loan gear out to those in need.
Captain Grabowski gave me enough Mustad ringed "J" and "C" hooks "to last my life time" and I can cover baits from tiny chovie to salami and skippies, what sizes should I bring? I'm thinking sardine will be our largest bait unless we make bait down south. I will bring 3 hook sabikis.
I will bring my YT iron and some for albacore.
I will bring some surface poppers.
I'm short on swim baits, especially small stuff. What colors and size? Some freshwater bass swimbaits are available locally.
What will I need for trolling? I'm assuming my large marauders should stay home.
12-25 lb:
Okuma CD-65 w Quantum Offshore Blue Runner BROS70M
20-40 lb:
Tiburonized Penn 27 with hybrid internals w/ Okuma Oceanic OC-C-701MH
Penn 970 w/ 7' no-name 20-40 lb E-glass
Okuma CT-30C w/ Okuma Catalina CT-C-661MH
40-50 lb:
Penn SSV8500LL Fin-Nor Lethal LT100 w/ Daiwa STW70MHS 7' MH
Daiwa 400H w/ Okuma CT-T-601M
Okuma CT-55N (converted from 6.2:1 to 4:1) w/ Okuma CT-T-601MH
Okuma SD-55L (to swap out with 400H or CT-55N for bottom fishing)
The "just-in-case"/trolling setups with Bryan Young's 5+1 upgrades:
2x Daiwa 600H w/ Okuma CT-T-561H
Daiwa 600H w/ Okuma BG-T-601M-1
All the conventionals have mods that I want to field test.
OH BOY!I'm going to learn allot on my first trip!
Lee,
As far as colors, I really like green and white, Mexican flag, chartreuse and really dark colors for overcast days. Basically similar to tuna clone colors. I have never trolled off a party boat, so I'm hoping someone else can hop in here. Beings how we are not getting into big stuff presumably, I'm guessing feathers and maybe even some clones!
Ron
On the boat I was deckhand on we trolled feathers and diving plugs, mostly X-Raps but some Yo-Zuri Hydromags for albacore.

I'm not sure how to move this to the top of this thread, but this should be a good starting point:
I will put it in my first post.
What I'm bringing:
[1] Newell 220 / 15# Mono (a maybe)
Penn Power Stick 7' [12-30#]
[2] Penn 501T / 30#Spectra + 20#Mono topshot
Seeker Classic 7' [15-40#]
[3] Newell 300C / 50#Spectra + 40#Mono topshot
Seeker Pinhead-TNT 7' [30-60#]
[4] Penn 113HL / 40# Mono
Penn Senator 6'6" [30-60#]RS-RT
[5] Penn 113H / 50#Spectra
DH Uglystick 6' [40-80#]Graphite

Tan Custom 6'10" [60#]
[7] 114H / 80#Mono (a maybe)
Tidewater 6' [50-80#]RS-RT
The 114H needs to be tested after upgrading.
The 113HL (dbl SS dogs, SS gear sleeve, Newell 4:1 gears) combo will be fished then may sell after the trip. Rod never used.
I have several other tani-ized Penns (Jigmasters, 111) that I will be bring for loaning during the trip.
Will talk about terminal tackle later after I hear more from yoda (alan).
Rob,
Have you fished that tidewater much?
The NEX has them and the bigger all roller one at a good price but I haven't heard anything about them from anyone I trust. What do you think?
Ron
There is a discussion going around that the fleet may be stuck with anchovies vs sardines for the upcoming season. You may have to make bait as well as fish the lighter outfits instead of the heavier stuff. Just passing along the info.

Haven't fished it yet, it will also be tested. I'll let you put some time on it during the trip, hopefully there will be something worthy attached to the other end of the line. ;)
WOW! you guys are in a different league to what we are in the U.K.
All that gear makes my eyes water.

Hey Ron,
Is the halibut rod the Okuma CE-C-461Ha or CE-C-561Ha?

I'm looking at the 561, I think that it and a grouper special would be a perfect pair.

Neither the 461 or the 561 is common in SoCal to my knowledge; I look forward to seeing it. Could just order one off of Amazon, but would prefer to see an actual one in-person first.
Wally world caries them out here. A few bucks more than on line but everything is like that in Hawaii. I've pulled on it and really like it. It has a long forend that would sit against a rail nicely.
Ron
It looks like I'm going to have to find room in my reel bag for a Newell 220 now.

I'm trying to work it out. My kids have a parent participation summer program to learn about their Japanese heritage, and that will be the first of the 4 week event. If I were to pay, and I end-up having to participate, I'll be out the cost of the trip and no fish to show for it. And my wife also has to participate as well...we both have different duties.
i fully understand Bryan. family always first... :)
This is soooo much fun to read your comments. Gear selection/prepration before a long range trip is almost exciting as the trip itself. Its very interesting reading your rational/logic about gear selection, makes me feel like Im prepiing to go with you all. As mentioned you can get by with just 3-4 outfits which reminds me an old saying in the gun world: Beware of the man with just one gun. Meaning the guy with one gun TYPICALL is very good with it. I know from personal experience that its next to IMPOSSIBLE to "KEEP IT SIMPLE", however it really works against you to take too much gear (except for those nice enough to bring loaner gear). You guys remind me of the US going to war and testing out all their new and improved weapons. For those taking UNTESTED gear, it would be wise to bring back-ups cause if you run into some MEAN FISH they WILL test your gear to the LIMITS.
The most important lesson Ive learned about long range fishing (really all of my fishing) is to enjoy the trip/environment FIRST, dont worry about the fish for their right below your feet. ALSO, TAKE A NOTE PAD TO TAKE NOTES/OBSERVATIONS on gear, rigging, etc, this will pay off big-time for future trips. One thing is for sure for all of you first timers, YOU WILL COME BACK MUCH BETTER FISHERMEN FOR SURE!
ENJOY EACH OTHER AND THE TRIP GUYS,
Leo

Leo, exactly my sentiments. the FTH12 Toro 50 CS550 MXJ BX-500N 750SS TLD20/40 SD have been tested and proven on freshwater species ranging from 3 to almost 30 kilos. as a newbie in this SDLR type of fishing i think it's better for me to be ready than to be disappointed because the only "gun" i brought to the fight was the wrong one...;D ;D ;D. also the only rod tested and proven is the MK-S-701M.
btw this guy who brought one gun is he a "sniper"? :) :D ;D
still have some time for you to sign up...
Great words Leo...Mel I agree with you...I would rather use my gear than loaner gear, but I also have to be cost conscious..That being said my wife has given me the LOOK every time I bring a new rod or reel into the house... ;D ;D ;D..I'm sure we will be OK!...Just cleaned up an ol' Okuma Catalina CT-30C (smooth) and had my Buddy Eric from Fisherman's Warehouse put a rod tip on a $10 garage sale special Seeker E glass 7' 870 for Calico Bass..If June was tomorrow I would be a whole lot richer :D

After I get rocked by large YT a few times I break out my 60lb rig unless we can get them mid or top water. I might troll with it too but we will see what the crew recommends. A 40 or 60 is what I prefer for making bait too.
saw one on youtube using a talica 12II 65# braid/50# Seaguar blue flouro on a PHD-760XH on the 3/4 day M/V San Diego. i wonder why? ;D ;D
take a peek;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRdB4P4v5Is
This one was caught on a MX 2 speed and 25lb, they were suspended at 90' over a 200' hump.
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g104/IGFA19Keta/YT.jpg) (http://s54.photobucket.com/user/IGFA19Keta/media/YT.jpg.html)
As far as gear goes I don't really see a need for anything less than 25lb test. Maybe bring some 20lb flouro to add a short leader if you happen to get lucky and get into some early season albies and their line shy. If you happen to stop at say Cedros and you want to fish some bass their not line shy at all so 25lb plus line is fine for them. If you want to fish lite line fine but you don't want to be "that guy" to hook up to something bigger on a troll or meter stop and everyone has to wait for you to land a fish beacuse your undergunned and the school has moved on. Not to say fishing lite line is a bad thing as I do it often but doing so requires the right skills and the need to put the maximum pressure on a fish you can.
My Lexa 300 has 50# spectra with a leader of 40-50# fluoro when I use it as Cedros. I picked up a Lexa 400 for this year too. Cedros YT like swimbaits almost as much as the Calicos... although the 45#er in my avatar pic was caught on a Mac fished on 50#. My son got YT of 37 and 25# on swimbaits fished on a Curado 300EJ with 50# spectra and a 50# fluoro leader.
how about artificials, irons yoyos etc, for YTs? what do you guys reccommend?
For yoyo and surface iron I like fishing 40lb test. You may need to step up to 50lb on the yoyo iron if you keep getting rocked. My go too reel for fishing 40lb in Baja is my JX 6/3 it offers the speed while yoyoing and power when needed by dropping to low gear. I set my drag at 10lbs at strike with line ran through the rods guides and then measured with a spring scale. Setting up my reel like this allows me more drag be moving the reels lever past strike when needed, though it is rare that I need to do this it does happen.
guys, don't go with too much gear. figure a 60-80 pound dropper loop rig, two 50's, two 40's, two 30's and a bass rod. you can also bring a troller, but i have five that i was going to put together.

I am bringing three Daiwa 600H's that can do double duty as 60-80lb droppers and trollers (the one to be set up as 60lb can have it's topshot swapped out for 80lb in a pinch for trolling).

IMO no a 50 sized reel will be over kill. The boat will have trollers and it sounds like others will bring them as well. 30's for trolling will be plenty or 113's should be fine. You guys will most likely be fishing for YT's, grouper and such. There is a shot at bass if you guys stay coastal, hit Cedros or Beniticto. The Lupe I don't think is open and it's early for tuna so you shouldn't run there because it's so far from everything if nothing is happening it's such a long run to anythere else. If you go offshore you will hit some of the banks like Uncle Sam and others. Hopefully you will run into some early season tuna but Cows will not be in the mix unless a miracle happens. If you do find tuna they will in all likelyhood ablies or BFT as it will be too early for YFT.

since the rod limit is 10, and i'm not saying i'll bring 10, i'll use the PS808 and G270H-8' as my bass rods. i know it's too much but i'd rather buy rods for the primary target which is YT.

x2 especially my 112H with PC's 5:1 gear ratio Bryan's 5+1 SS this and SS that. hopefully will catch a "monster's" that will test this reel's innards to the max (real world).
also i'm taking full advantage of it. catching and getting the fish on the boat, read it somewhere here, is a bonus. for me the challenge of hooking and the fight that follows , in short fishing, is IT. and as i put more on the boat fishing experience, most of all CONFIDENCE, then tackle becomes "SIMPLE", much simpler.
"EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED" and to put it mildly "things happen"...

Mel: I believe the term getting rocked is referring to the fish heading into the rocks and breaking or cutting your line. That being said I will just bring my ol' Buck knife and snorklke & you and I can just go get em the old fashion way ;D ;D ;D...Have a great day!!!

When a YT is on structure they tend to use the sharp rocks to cut you off.
ok Lee, no wonder we need up to 50lb mono/fluoro line to have that extra umph=to stop that beast... :)

On his 2005 SOA trip, our illustrious sensei got rocked when using 20lbs of drag...
wow 20 lbs of drag. gotta go to the gym ASAP or at least do push ups...
it can be a little confusing. when i talk about 30, 50 and 80 "class" reels, i mean reels with the penn, shimano, avet, accurate or makaira 30's, 50's or 80's. these are loaded with 100 to 200 pound spectra and have drag settings of 20 to 60 pounds. i have three "50 class" reels and two "30 class" reels that i will bring for trolling.
mostly, we will need live bait or jig reels with topshots of 30, 40 and 50 pound mono or fluoro. these are typically small two speeds that are loaded up with 300 yards of 50 to 60 pound spectra and 25 yard topshots of your favorite line. 40 pound will be your main set up. go to 50 if the bite is easy. if you are not getting bit, drop down to a 30 pound topshot, but prepare to have a fight on your hands.
we will be targeting bluefin and yellowfin to 60 pounds in open water (if we can find them), an occasional stray dorado to 20 pounds in open water, yellowtail to 40 pounds at cedros, and calicos to 10 pounds at cedros. these are relatively small fish.
Alan, thanks for clearing it up. i'm thinking my PG541 "MAN CAVE WORKS" :D(80lb dyneema backing) with the upgrades can be used with a topshot of 60# mono/fluoro ???
that will work!
My lord,
If I hook into a 60 pound Blue Fin Tuna on my Newell Tuna Special I will propably pass out from elation. This is going to be so cool.
So, I'm covered for reels, and actually have all the rods that I would "need" (what a stupid word to use in a sport fishing conversation,) but if you had $200.00 and were going to buy one rod to be the most beneficial for this trip using a star drag reel what would it be?
Ron
I'm going on a 2 1/2 day over Memorial Day weekend on the Pacific Voyager so should have a little better feel for likely conditions after that. Last year on that trip we were catching 5-10# YT. Hoping for better this year!
Ron, don't worry we're behind you and will catch you with our invisible arms... ;) :D ;D
MarkT, hopefully i'll be in your neck of the woods no later than the 26th of May and go on a at least 3/4 day trip just to have a feeling for it (casting 101).
OK, I have 2 Seeker 7' rods...1 is a black steel that is a 30-40 and the other is and old glass S870-7' (15-40#) and I need 1 more reel. Thoughts on a 30# star drag... Baja Special-Torium 20 or 30, or ??? I think the Torium has an available bearing for the bushing and can upgrade the drags...Any thoughts.
Tim
I can bring a Torium 16 or 20 or Penn 545 GS w/5.3 gears if you want to borrow one for 30#. I have a Calstar 765XL, Seeker Classic 670 and a 6465h if anyone needs a solid 30#, 40# or yoyo stick. Lots more too including 2 PG 540's with 5 or 3.6 gears w/40# if anyone feels they're short of something or have problems traveling with some rods. I can bring an Ulua93H if anyone wants to throw 7X's on the jig stick. I can bring extra bass gear if anyone wants to give it a go.
I'm leaning towards a 25, 2x30, 2x40, 50, and a 6/0 for dropper loop or trolling and Lexa 300/400's for bass that can go on the 8' 25/30# rods.

You already have a 30# star drag. You posted earlier that you had a "...Okuma Catalina CT30C..." Have you swapped out the two non-CF washers and rebuilt with CF"s? If you plug in the ratings into the Accurate Line calcuator, it gives capacities of 516 yds of 50lb braid or 395 yds of 65lb braid. My CT-30C's holding (to best recollection) about 500yds of 50lb braid plus 10yds of 40lb mono topshot with 6ft of 40lb fluoro leader spliced on. Have fished it with 13lbs of drag and landed BFT schoolies. Going down to 10lbs drag for a 30lb setup is definitely doable on the CT-30C.

I love my Catalina, but at 4:1 always considered it a bit slow for jigging, ect.. This is an old model and I think it actually has 3 non cf washers? Looks like a candidate for some upgrades...Thanks for the input.

If you are going to put in the new drag washers, you also have the option of swapping out the 30C's main gear and pinion to the 30CS's 6.2:1. Check out the schematics at Mike's Reel Repair. The CT-30x's (and the CT-55x's) appeared to have been designed in a way so that a minor swap of the main and pinion gave Okuma another model in the lineup. I've ordered the CT-55C's 4:1 set to replace my CT-55N's 6.2:1 and it was $23 with $3 shipping from Okuma; suspect the cost of the 30CS parts would be about the same.
OH BOY! Home sick and bored...Made my decision to buy an old Penn reel to go with my old Seeker S870-7' rod and need it to be 30# class...I have a reel but thought going fishing with you guys I should at least try to bring something to the table...Found a couple of nice ol' skool 3/0 & jigmasters that would look nice on the maroon/white wrapping on my Seeker..My thoughts are a basic list of upgrades and mods that don't require a bunch of machining or too much thinking for a beginner...I'm sure this is the wrong thread to list this under but those who know will help direct me to the right place.....My first thought is a vintage jigmaster??? But do like the old 3/0's...Input and then when I buy the reel I will ask for more help..I'm thinking drag upgrade & gear ratio upgrade and possibly spool & frame as well...Want to keep it under $200 total as I can buy a new reel for less than that.

The Jigmaster and 112H use the same gears and drag stack.
Whats the word Im looking for? Ah yes, "professional overun" (learned this here). Wonder what this post would look like for a 10 day trip, now thats where you need a variety of tackle.
Enjoy,

On my first 10 day we used our 50's most of the time. I came home with 2 cow YFT, a lot of other large YFT and is little wahoo.

guys, don't go with too much gear. figure a 60-80 pound dropper loop rig, two 50's, two 40's, two 30's and a bass rod.
Would a Curado 200 be a good choice for a bass reel?
it should be fine.
Mel and company,
This would be a great trip for a Penn 750ss and a 650ss both with braid backing. The 650ss with a topshot of 20/25# for those Calico's at Cedros/Guadalupe would be a BLAST (also jigging to some yellowtails) and the 750ss on some Tuna and large Yellow tail with some poppers should be THRILLING!!! IM NOT SAYING BRING THIS IN ADDITION but as substitutes to what you were thinking of bringing (maybe as the second 40/25# rigs).
Just a thought,
Leo

if you go to page one a spinner is on my tentative list. it's probably too much for calicos but it's what i have. i might bring my other spinner (top w/ 40-50#) for poppers/sticks if i find a matching rod before the trip.
as mentioned before i have no on the boat saltwater experience, so this is a chance for me to try things. hopefully, with the arsenal i'm bringing, i'll get at least one fish on the deck. here i always tell people i'm having fun while fishing but happier when i catch and release at least one.

highly recommended, Alan T.'s SS sleeve and handle Bryan's 5+1 kit SS dog/s Keta's Krank and a bigger star, you won't regret it. and IMHO the frame can wait. :)
i have all these recommendations + more on my 112H. can't help replying to this... ;) ;D
Listen to Mel brother, he knows what he is talking about.
The 112H and the Jigmaster have the same gears, so if you are looking for speed the 3/0 will retrieve more line per crank. You should be able to do all of Mels recommended mods on a good reel and be in it for a little more than half of your $200.00. Fill that thing with 30 pound mono and you are all set.

You will also need a small tub of Cal's drag grease, a marine grease and an oil. Everyone has their favorites when it comes to grease and oil, for your reel I would recomend the Penn maintenance pack with their grease and oil. The kit has enough to maintain several reels and only costs a few bucks.

Yup...Hx 5/2 ... The rod is a Rainshadow composite 40-80...A guy in Indiana makes them & was advertising them as a west coast rail rod. I asked if he would make a blacked out version and he asked if he could add some extras for free and market the blacked out version...Of coarse I told him he could add all the freebie's he wanted ;D ;D ;D
I've never fished this style fishing...
but that is one sweet looking 'backup' combo!
Tim, are you going to troll with this combo? I've decided not to bring my MAK 20 because Alan T. will bring, i think, 5 combos for trolling duties.

Mel: I think we could troll this??? It's 7' but has a long butt for rail fishing. Also I scored a 30 year old Daiwa SLT30 and a great deal on a G. Loomis 60-100 all roller to troll...I would have never sold all my other custom gear and Lamiglas stuff that I had and upgraded to what I have now if my original plans were to go on this trip...I was on another trip and my friends business pulled their sponsorship & his free ride! So by divine intervention I found you guys!!! How luck can a guy get ;D ;D ;D

It's Penn's take on the Calstar Grafighter 765L in their Carnage lineup. I'd guess it's probably good for 40-50#. I have a Seeker 6465H in that line class that I've used for 50#. I caught the YT in my avatar pic on it. I've since moved on to a Phenix 700XH for this year.

I have more than enough 6'6"-7' 40# rods if you need to borrow one.
guys, don't spend money on rods and reels for this trip. there will be plenty of gear. get an assortment of 1/0, 3/0 and 5/0 hooks, maybe some a few 4, 8 and 12 ounce sinkers, some 30, 40 and 50 pound fluoro leader if you want, and a goofy straw hat. you could literally board with a shaving kit and clothes for the week and do just fine. don't forget plenty of sunscreen.

I have more than enough 6'6"-7' 40# rods if you need to borrow one.
Lee, thanks much! but my concern is putting it mildly "THINGS HAPPEN".
I've got a nice 765xl you can use if your 765L needs a little brother. I've got a Seeker CJB65H that J.AkuHed wrapped me for my birthday years ago that's nice for 40# too. Randy at Seeker said it was the closest you'd get to a classic 865xh in a composite rod.
man! am i glad i'm an Ohana member. :) :) :)

I have a Penn Senator (30-60# 6-1/2 ft.) rod never been fished. It's matched up to a 113H with 40# mono and I plan to sell both individually or together at the end of the trip. I'd like to try my full-modded 113H before I say goodbye to it. Anyone is welcome to try whatever I'm not using at the moment.
Alan & Bryan: Parts arrived today ;D ;D ;D thank you...Few more pieces to the puzzle next week, then I build my 112H...Most likely will need help.

OK, so now I've done this...What is my next step? My thinking is a Beer ;D ;D ;D
Actually: Brake cleaner or Carb cleaner?

I'd say,
Wire brush with grease, elbow grease, 5+1 kit from Bryan, a stainless gear sleeve and some TSI. One of Alan's handles wouldn't hurt.

Ron I have all those parts already & the brush...TSI ... gun cleaner? I may have that too...I have 2 cans of brake cleaner in the garage and figure that to be the safest?
Tim
TSI is a lubricant that is popular with guys on here. I know some guys use gun cleaner but brake cleaner works great.
Ron
according to the guys as TSI, the us secret service uses tsi 321 and the aerosol for their service weapons.
Alan -
I know you said more than once not to go out and buy a bunch of stuff, but sometime could you post a list of what has worked before so if we have it we can bring it? A list might include colors and patterns of irons, plastics, trolling lures; and terminal tackle, etc. You have already mentioned hooks, sinkers, 30-40-50 pound rigs, but having it all in one place would help. Right now, I'm using the Spirit of Adventure list and your previous info as a starting point.

guys, don't spend money on rods and reels for this trip. there will be plenty of gear. get an assortment of 1/0, 3/0 and 5/0 hooks, maybe some a few 4, 8 and 12 ounce sinkers, some 30, 40 and 50 pound fluoro leader if you want, and a goofy straw hat. you could literally board with a shaving kit and clothes for the week and do just fine. don't forget plenty of sunscreen.
Come on Alan, we like to fish because it gives us an excuse to buy more gear. Why do think we come to your site? We're seriously dedicated, although our wives may have another term for it! My wife certainly did but then she was a "seriously dedicated" Springsteen fan.
Irons: Salas 7x and Tady 45 are good surface irons. Bird #### (Sardine) and mint are good colors. Salas 6x and 6x jr for yoyo. Blue/white and scrambled egg are good colors.
Plastics for Calicos. 1oz lead heads with 5-7" swimbaits in bait colors. I like Warbait lead heads and MC swimbaits.
I'll be bringing Megabaits, WaxWings, slashbaits too. All the usual stuff in my tacklebag.
some megabaits would be good too. Been on too many trip when a guy have drop them deep and hooked up with either tuna or opah.
Opah!
Hadn't thought of that, they may be around. Never caught one of them but LOVE eating them!!
Ron
this may be a little too much info for some, but others have never been on one of these boats.
the evening routine - at the end of the day, you stink! you've gotta shower. likely 4 of the 5 nights the boat will be on the run. three of the four heads have showers so we will all have time to shower. i wear flipflops into the shower, but i also take time to wipe down the floor with the t-shirt that wore that day to clean up a little. you will need the usual floss, toothbrush and tooth paste, bar soap, shampoo, wash cloth and a bath towel or two. i always wear jeans when i fish and will wear the same pair of jeans all week. all the rest of the clothes that i wore that day will get tossed into the trash. once i change into my jammies, it's cocktail hour, then off to bed.
getting some sleep - the cabins are small. decide between you and your cabinmate who gets the top bunk and who gets bottom. the cabins are also cold. they are air conditioned and it's hard to regulate. some guys tape off the vents a little. i wear a sweatshirt at night, but you will have extra blankets and pillows in each cabin. somewhere, within easy reach, you should keep your glasses and a flashlight in case there is an emergency overnight. when i sleep, i use wax ear plugs. don't forget a small alarm clock. if you have trouble sleeping in your cabin for any reason, you always have the option of sleeping in the galley. someone always does that. if you go out onto the deck at night, stay away from the rail. don't try to puke or pee over the rail. the deckhands can always wash the deck later. we do not want anyone going overboard.
wake up call - get up, get dressed, eat something, slather on the sunscreen and the chapstick, find a hat and get ready to fish. dean and danny will have breakfast going, but you also have your choice of fresh fruits and cereals. our first and fourth fishing days will likely start out trolling. our second and third fishing days will hopefully be at cedros, which means jig and live bait fishing. lunches and dinners will also be first call, second call and last call. we will have slow times during the day to practice your knots, rerig or just kick back a little.
gearing up for the day - sunscreen, and lots of it. a wide brimmed hat and sun glasses. i always wear jeans to keep my legs from burning. shoes are always a question. my feet cook in xtra-tufs and they make me miserable. i have old running shoes and i just do my best to try to keep my feet dry, the deck gets bloody and the crew is constantly out with a hose to wash away the blood and slime. you will get wet. with flipflops, your feet will burn and could get cut up. with sneakers or deck shoes, your feet will get wet. and with xtra-tufs, your feet will cook. i sometimes use a gimble belt and it's nice because it holds my needle nose pliers and wire cutters. and i always carry a pocket knife.
rods and reels - i'd recommend a pair of 30 pound rigs, a pair of 40 pound rigs, a pair of 50 pound rigs and maybe a 60. if you want to bring an 80 pound troller instead, that's fine, but i will have 5 trolling rigs for us. you can also bring a 20 pound rig for calicos if you wish. we may or may not get a chance to use it. your "go to" rig will be your 40 pound set up. i will be bringing plenty of extra rods and reels, and will likely be setting them up once i see the bait we are getting and have a chance to talk to the captain about the fishing that we can anticipate.
terminal tackle - bring 1/0, 3/0 and 5/0 live bait hooks. i like ringed owner flyliners. you can also use circle hooks, but circle hooks are hard on my blood pressure. 1/0. 3/0 and 5/0 circles are fine. we won't need that many swivels but i will bring my crimping kit in case we need to rig any trolling leaders, and there is always a wide assortment of jigs that we all have.
line - you can bring leader material in mono or fluoro. i have some soft steel monofilament from tony garza that i used last year. good stuff. i also have berkely big game, some fluoro left over, some jb hollow spectra, some solid spectra and some of alan chui's hollow thunder. i'm likely not going to bring the winder. your reels should be strung up before you board. we only have monday to rig up. the next four days will be spend fishing!
Reading this is driving my crazy!! June, gget here already!!
Ron
I may be on a 2 days trip prior (coming in on Sunday June 15). Either way I planned on making a bunch of 30, 40, 50 and 60 pounds wind-ons with about 20-30 feet of Berkeley big games and 60 lbs hollowcore. Will meet up with you all on Sunday and leave it for you guys to try if you like. If I can't make it to the 2 days trip or can't come down that Sunday, if someone is driving through Orange County, just give me a holler and I can meet up with you to hand over the wind-ons. They have been tested on batrays up to 50+ inches wing span and held up fine.
Mike
found this at BD, Erik Landesfeind recommendation. i am hoping this will work at our trip. my rod and reel combos are not the same as his but the lure recommendation is what most of the anglers use in Southern California.
http://www.bdoutdoors.com/article/spring-yellowtail-tackle/
btw my reels are 3/0 4/0 and at least one spinner. :) :) :)
I knew it!!! I should NOT have looked at this page prior to going to work....I have to drive to Modesto and my brain is already spinning...TADY, SALAS, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 30,40,50,60, FLOURO, MONO!!!!
IS IT JUNE YET ;D ;D ;D ;D
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!
BIG TIM
how is fishing like a craps game?
at the casino, the best bet in the house is to play craps. you play the pass line and take odds. that's it. nothing else. that's it!
but if all you do is play the pass line and take odds, then craps is the most boring game in the entire world. everyone around you is placing bets, taking big 6 or big 8, or the worst sucker bet of all, playing the field. and here you are, playing it save and patient, on the pass line and taking odds. this long range fishing stuff is the same. nothing produces better than soaking a live bait. but if that's all you do, long range fishing is nothing but hours of boredom, and if you're lucky a half dozen 10 minute bursts of sheer terror, while you are watching people around you hooking up on jigs, or plunking, or doing something else just to change it up. and here you are, soaking that damned bait!
but if you do that, and you are dilligent, if you listen to the deckhands and do what they say, if your gear is in good shape and if you can cast, your pile of fish will be the biggest at the end of the trip.
oh, wait. we're not giving out numbers! ok, go spend as much money as you want!!!! ;D

nice! is that a 349 handle?
That will certainatly work for calicos, but it would be a perfectly acceptable yellowtail rig also.

Ron: I hope it can catch yellowtail as well ;D ;D ;D

The 349 uses the 113H gear sleeve. I think the number for that handle is 24-56.

The 349/113H uses either a 24-113H or a 24-349, the 24-56 is for the smaller gear sleeve. The 2 hole one is a 24-349.
from what i've been reading at the other board, the chovies are back. in case we are going to toss this bait what rods are suitable/recommended? only thing i know about the rod is it has to be long, at least 8'. as for the reels these are what i'm thinking of bringing; squidder 146 P220F FTH12 TOR-16 400BSV SX and maybe my tom hryniuk's squidder. not decided yet on which to bring... ??? ::) :D ;D
Standard 'chovies are no problem with 25-30#. Micro, 2 eyes and a wiggle Anchovies are another thing, but I've caught Albies on 25# and a #6 hook with them too.
I have heard of people using cast-a-bubble to send those no-see-ums out to the zone. May want to load up on some since they are super cheap.
had to google cast-a-bubble. in here in brasil where i fish we use "boias"=float made of foam and lead for the weight. do you think 40 grams is too heavy for chovies? thanks much!
Mel,
Just pick up the cast -a - bubble when you get to the US. Any Walmart, etc.. will have it for like 2 for $1 or so. The nice thing about the cast - a - bubble is the ability to change the casting weight by adding water and the bubble will slide up your line to allow the bait to swim away.
Quote from: maxpowers on April 04, 2014, 02:57:19 PM
...Just pick up the cast -a - bubble when you get to the US...
sounds good...
Cast a bubbles are commonly used for trout fishing. Slide one on the line, tie on a swivel and a couple feet of leader, tie on a #18 treble hook, add some powerbait and you're good to go. Fill it with water and cast away!
A one oz chrome torpedo sinker in line works with little chovies too. I've caught a lot with small bait and the little torpedo.
We used the cast -a - bubble for spin flyfishing or fishing a feather for bonito. The splash created by the bubble sounds like fleeing bait fish.
sliding sinkers can be nice, or just a torpedo sinker on a rubber band. generally you want to keep the bait down under the water so the birds don't grab them. bubbles or floats would be counterproductive.
I like light rubbercores; they get the bait down, but not like an express train. :)
~A~
Can you bring a slingshot to shoot those pesky birds?
Apples work, notice the green one headed for a direct hit on the third bird from the right, it's blocking the fourth bird from the right. the birds were "painting" our tackle boxes.

you can, but please check in the the crew to make sure it's ok with them.
Just be careful if you use egg/sliding sinkers, these can cause tangles if you don't stay in touch with your bait. The sinker slides down the line but your bait may be much higher in the water swimming in the wrong direction wrapping other lines and you'll never know it, well that is until you get bit and you have seven other lines with you.
yeah, i never use them.
if worse comes to worst, i'll just use poppers/stick baits surface and yoyo irons... :) ;) ;D

These are too thick...My best guess is 2mm would work. Dawn at Smooth Drag says she has nothing that thick and most likely the glue would penetrate the fibers. I found carbon fiber plate .06" thick (close) and one side is matte and the other is gloss. My thinking is that I could use the adhesive on the gloss side and customize my own carbon fiber drag washer ? And then I need to find someone to cut into 2 7/8" O.D. x 1 5/8" I.D. ... Your thoughts...Would like to try this for the SOA trip.

i don't think these is the CF you need, but then again i maybe wrong. there was a discussion regarding this type of carbon fiber and i don't remember which thread, sorry. i used to buy carbon fiber chassis for my RC cars and it was cut from this type. here's what you want;

Mel, you are right , but that material isn't 2mm thick, that being said I sent a similar link in an email to the company in Utah and 1 on the east coast in hopes to get a response early next week to see if they have that style in 2mm. I won't purchase any until I'm relatively sure it will work.

So, I was hoping to buy 2 nice So Cal rods for this trip but it just isn't in the cards. That means one of my 20 pound rigs will be a yellow po' (Ugly Stick Tiger rod) 7ft 10-30#. My wife bought it for me as a just because gift years ago and I've caught a few bay bass and such with it out of SD bay. My question is which reel to go on it? I have a SLH-V 20 and a Newelled Baymaster looking for a home. The other reel will end up on a pre-Shakespeare All-Star.
Thanks

Don't worry about tackle. We have lots.
After reading Alan Hawk's review of the Fin-Nor Lethal LT100 and re-evaluating the compromises needed in order to get the Penn SSV8500LL's Live Liner function, it became too apparent that LESS is MORE.

As a rule-of-thumb, I put gimbal's on ALL rods 40# and up.

. Wow....whose bringing the kitchen sink. ;D
It's packed.
I've been on several 10 and 15 day trips and every one has been different. On the first one (a 10 day) I was prepared for YT and school YFT up to 60#. It's a good thing Mark at Charkbait talked me into bringing a heavy rod and a 50 as we ended up fishing for cow YFT for most of the trip. The next trip was a 15 day and I thought I had everything I needed to catch wahoo and cow YFT, I had the heavy gear but my 40# gear was outclassed by the grade of wahoo we were catching....well I was hooking them and went 22-0...I made up for this by landing 3 cows up to 258#. The next 15 day trip I knew I was prepared, and had most of what I needed but not all. That trip I only lost 2 wahoo and brought 10 to port, 8 made it home.
What I've learned is to bring a variety of gear but you will never have what it takes 100% of the time. This will be my first short trip and I'm bringing mostly 30# and 40# gear (2 each), one 25#, a light rod for calico bass and a 60# rod in case we find large YT. I will also have several torpedo weights in the 6-8 ounce range, swimbaits, a few trolling plugs and feathers, iron, a pile of hooks and lots of fluorocarbon in the 20-60 range. I have some reels I want to test so I will have far too many reels. And then there is my "vintage" 40# rod with a 349L on it that I really want to catch a large YT with. Toss in the kitchen sink and I feel I'm almost covered.
Ok..Lee & Ron, looks like you guys are bringing the kitchen sinks, so I will not ;D.
Tim
Here are some of the things I've neglected to bring in the past:
Split ring/crimping pliers
Fish rags (with a shower curtain ring to clip on belt)

Screw driver
Hook file
Band-aids & Neosporin
Eyeglasses lanyard
Sunscreen
Shampoo
Cigarettes (if that's your vice)
Hand gaff for sorting fish at dock
Rubber gloves for same
and many more...
I have, however, always brought the kitchen sink. ;D

First aid kit
Spare glasses
Shop towels
Camera
Favorite tea
Peripherals
Topshot jig and needles
Fishing gloves

I don't know. :-\ I am not familiar with the models. Does it help for you to know that the tank has 80lb braid with 100 flouro top shot. Dominick
Seeker Black Steel G6470 is a 40# rod. G6480 is 30-40#.
I'm going on a 2 1/2 day this weekend on the Pacific Voyager out of Seaforth. Conditions are looking real good. I've been told to bring 60# in case the big boys want to play. There are reports of big numbers of BFT 90-300 miles down. I was going to take 25-30-30-40-50. I guess I'll take some 60# fluoro in case I need to upgrade the 50. One 30 is an SX Raptor, 40 is a Saltiga 40LDII, 50 is an HX Raptor so all 3 can play up a line class if I need to go big. I can only hope!
John Grabowski designed a fine rod in the G6470 along with Seeker for 40 lb test. I don't own any but I have fished them many times. I do own two 6470's by Calstar one a BWC and a standard honey color and have caught many fish with them (there not made any more by Calstar) and one Calstar BWC 6480 for 40-50 lb. The honey 6470 stays in Baja and the BWC's rides with me on most trips here, well when 40 lb bait and 50lb jigs are needed, but sadly that is not often until I head south. The Black Steel's have lovely tips for slinging deans and even iron and shut off where they are most comfortable but 50 lb is pushing that rod. The G6480-8 is a fantastic 30 lb rod with the H a great 40 lb rod in the Black Steel line.
A tank should be a 50-60lb test bait reel. On the lighter rods it is way over kill, keep that for sails, marlin, larger tuna on bait, mean mossbacks and big AJ's over structur.
Neither are capable of pulling the plug from the bottom of the ocean with a total tank.
That G6480 when acid wrapped is very stable under load. I think the biggest things I've caught on it were 40# Humbolt squid a few years ago. It worked very well when they were zig-zagging around. I let some newbies catch a few with it too. They had a hoot even with the 8' rod.
A 45# YT is the biggest on G6470.
They both started as factory rods but I turned 'em over to my brah, J.AkuHed, for some acid lovin'.
Here is the Seeker Promo 6470 Captain Grabowski handed me when I won the 5 Star processing certificate and was going to give it away to another person on the trip, I usually process my own fish. This is a very good rod and sometime in the future it will be spiral wrapped.

Keta,
That looks like a Seeker American series rod because of the red white and blue wraps with honey blank. If it is its a all glass rod that has not been made in some time and also looks custom wrapped, maybe for John as promo stuff. Before re wrapping it I'd do a little research on it you may have a collectable there.

Thanks for the "warning" it does have "promo" on the other side. I will save it as is, it also has personal value because it reminds me of a fun trip with a good crew and a GREAT captain. I think I landed the wahoo I dropped off at Charkbait on it too. I have 2 Black Steel 6465H rods I can rewrap and use for 40lb.

I just got back from a 2.5 dayer aboard the Pac Voyager at 9am today. I got 2 10# YT, a 20# YFT, a 20# BFT and a 60#+ BFT. I gave away the YT and a bag of BFT... I should've given away more! Most of the rest will go to work with me tomorrow to be given away. When the big boys were around we were told to use nothing less than 40# on a 2-speed... so I did! My biggest BFT came on a 'dine cherry picked by a DH. I told him it worked out and he said he'd noticed. We would have done much better with better bait. We had Mackeral, a few Sardines, some small Anchovies and some Squid left over from the prior trip that they'd made at San Martin. With a tank of 'dines we'd have slayed them. Tuna were caught 165-190 miles south. YT were off paddies. Plan accordingly!
The long range boats in SD get the cured 'dines. The others get whatever is available. Hopefully, we'll get the good stuff!
I have reconsidered what I'm bringing and now will upgrade everything and drop the calico bass rig and replace it with a Avet JX or HX on a 40# rod. I really was looking forward to targeting YT but BFT will make me happy.
The last couple of days it's been rough offshore and the counts are rat Yellowtails and not vast quantities of them. It should pick back up in the next couple weeks or else we'll be fishing with 15-20# and getting most of the fish on the troll.

The standard would be plugs and feathers:

If it saves you the hassle of bringing some, you borrow any of these since I can't use them all at the same time. You can also replace the leader on any you choose to use just for peace of mind.
Just an FYI,
Our Local Big 5 Sporting Goods stores are having a pretty decent sales. I picked up a displayed Talica 16II for $353 out the door. The sales ends Saturday.
Spirit of Adventure enthusiasts, I met Alan at the range (we got some shooting in) I dropped off the Tank and a rod. Anyone and everyone on the trip should try it out. It is a fine reel. Have fun with it as I have had over several trips. Its gotten, tuna, marlin, dorado and rooster fish and perform flawlessly. Dominick

Went to the Range in Fresno last week and shot my .357 and a few rentals...Went off with a Ruger 22/45 at full distance left & right handed.Had a big smile till the CHP showed up with a .44 mag and hit 6 for 6 bulls eyes form 40' left and right handed :o I FEEL PROTECTED FOR SURE ;D
I forgot to mention that I had planned to take the reel on my Baja trip 6/10-17 but the trip overlapped with the SOA so I won't get to use it this month but I'll take it when I go back in November. Tim I do alright for an old guy. The funny thing is I never tried shooting left handed. Next time. Alan has a couple of Sigs and I rented a Glock 9mm. The Glock was fun but I liked Alan's guns better. Dominick
Do you want to borrow my Tank?
