So I finally built my first reel, after reading and learning from all you great people over the last two or three months I did it, and it was eventful to say the least!
Big thanks to Randy at Vintage Offshore, Sal's Custom Knobs, Adam at Motive Fab, Tom at Cortez Conversions, Broadway Dom and Alan at Pro Challenger for all the amazing parts that made this reel come together, and to many who gave me advice when I was "stuck". Also want to thank Alan for building this amazing site filled with info, parts and most importantly, friends! Hope you like my build, and the bloody fish pics soon to come . . . Darin
That's a beautiful narrow jigmaster build! My first custom reel was a jigmaster too and the wealth of knowledge on here was the only reason I was able to do it. Your choice on power handle and arm really sets it off. Hope to see you bring in a ton of nice fish on it, nothing more satisfying than catching fish on equipment you've built. Careful now....jigs are the gateway to reel addiction, before you now it they can multiply to a shelf full. Then there's the 113h which gets u into the heavy duty stuff. Happy wrenching!
Aloha,
Kyle

Thanks, Kyle, I want to know what that feels like for sure!
Awesome Darin.
When I first came here, I did not know anything.
This site is like no other.
Glad to see you are taking advantage of the Ohana. ;)
I can almost guarantee you aren't finished with that reel. put some hours in fishing it hard and you'll find out things here and there that you'd like to improve more, that's the fun of it though.
This is a jig I threw all the newest goodies into

Then here's a 501 with newell kit I wanted to give an oldschool/period correct appearance. Inside she's got all the modern stainless goodies though, so it's really a resto-mod.

Very nice Daren. You got the bug now ;) ;D..............Joe
Nicely done Darin
When I first started here I too was a complete novice, and to this day am still a novice. Just don't let anyone else know that ;) ;)

Nicely done Darin, I think the classic black and silver color combination always looks good and the black and silver handle really finishes it off.
Not to say brightly colored reels don't look good as well - nice to see the Rasta Jigmaster again Kyle. ;D ;D
Mike
OK that does look slick. The pic you sent me looked like you kept the stock side plates.
Stick it my box with the crappy 4/0. I think I have a pair of Zebco 404's from 1975 I will send back to relive your childhood. One has a broken foot but duct tape it to your cane pole and you're all good. ;D ;D ;D
Beautiful build Darin, there is no holding you back now :).
The color combination does give it a classic look. Adam's arm and star, with Broadway's fish scale pattern really adds to it....enjoy it!

Whoa I think I'll take you up on that offer Sal! Can you make a shape similar to the torpedo penn knob but maybe about the size of a 114h knob
Darin, you have a great reel there now, nice work, thanks for showing, cheers Don, I am not going to show you my first build, you will be laughing for a month.

Thank you, Don! I started the bar high, so hopefully I can afford to do better on the next one while you had plenty of room to go up without breaking your wallet ;D

I am having to get paper towels to put under my chin, I am drooling like young pup looking at a plate full of bacon! That is one nice looking reel! That old school narrowed reel is no slouch either, hell all of them look to good to fish with! I would hate beating them up, and I always end up nicking and dinging them, hence why I never go to that level of perfection. I would feel like I was in some Greek Tragedy, guy builds reel, Fishing Gods get jealous as reel looks better than theirs, guy "drops" (with assistance of said deity) rod in surf never to be found again or is so scraped up, he is haunted by his mistake for life, Gods are happy once again. Lol

Thank you, I'm going to ding the hell out of it, I built it to fish and am not worried about it, but will probably wince on the first one... ;D ;D ;D
Hi Darin, Awesome first build mate.
I too are about to get my first build underway soon, waiting for the dona reel (Squidder) and then some parts to start from Randy,
looking forward to getting into it. There's so much knowledge on this site and tricked up parts to be had.
Actually, I've also put aside a 4/0 I purchased years back that's going to get the same treatment..
Luv ya work Fella !!

Thank you my friend, couldn't have done it on my own, but this place and it's members truly have inspired me and for that I'm very grateful!
Can't wait to see your squidder build mate and the 4/0 as well, good luck and post some pics when you're done...
Thanks Darin, There might be a few pictures of the process along the way, with plenty of questions to boot ! I've got the xtra narrow kit coming from Randy for the Squidder, but have no idea How far I can actually go with it inside, so I'll be asking the question there.
The 4/0 came to me already fitted with the Tiburon kit outside, but standard inside,
So again I will have to see what's available and how far you can go with this too.
It's all the way or nothing with these puppies, should be a great learning curve.......
Col
Col, send me a pm or email to discuss more if you want to, but you've got a great start already!
Here we have a member that not long ago was asking a bunch of questions and he is now sharing what he has learned with others.
This is a good example of what this site is all about.
You are doing great Darin, keep up your good wook.
Sal
Darin, Will definitely do that,, appreciated, thanks.

Thank you so much, Sal, I appreciate you and all your help getting me to this point!!!
I'm amazed at some of these old Penn conventionals that have been brought to life with these aftermarket parts. I like to keep everything stock but these unique inventions posted on here are sure fun to look at.
Awesome. How much braid does it hold?
Darin,
I think it's time you shared pictures of this reel doing what it was made to do... put fish on the deck.
