Got this off the Bay along with a 114 needing work but got Both going and would like to know what this one Is ?
It is built like a Tank and weighs just under 2 pounds, has a brass main gear and apparently some bearings .
The Bail Returns with a Force that would compare to a Rat Trap .
Says Penn in several places and has a spot where a Badge might have been but is long gone.
Sooooooooo? What it is ? and Maybe age and is it worth restoring .
Thank you .
Either a 704Z or 706Z- check your weight again; these are supposed to be 21 oz. WELL worth restoration- there is a little cottage industry and following for modifying these reels. They are Tanks.
Nick, post up a pic of yours.
I also think it's a 704Z. John is right, what you have there is a splendid and tough classic reel that's been horribly cared-for, which definitely deserves to be brought back to life. Just to give you some idea, here's an NIB one from the fleaBay:

If I needed a truly great old Penn spinner, I wouldn't blink at that price, either. :)

Two bills, for the last one you'll ever need...agree! Great to hear out of you, Lady A!
And, amazingly, (except for the housing, which can be painted) Mystic has virtually every part you might need for a thorough restoration:

Good luck! :)

Thanks for the replies.
So far this old War Horse seems flawless in operation and is tight as well.Looks like Joe Lewis after losing a Fight but smooth turning and Bail Return that would kill a Rat for sure.
From best I can tell it weighs 1 pound 8 ounces is ALL METAL except for drag knob.
Wondering if it is 705 or something else since it left hand retrieve?
I Knew it was something when I picked it up out of the box with the weigh of it and after opening it up it seems like a Gorilla might use it .
How else can I determine just what model it is .
Gear Teeth Count, weight, any outside circumference or other measurements and would there be a Badge available some where ?
even number means left hand. RH would be 705. you can maybe measure spool diameter and post it to see if someone that has one can verify. I cant get to my 706 at the moment to check.
With the Spool in my hand across the bottom is 2.9 inches or 73.7 M&M's............lol
Like every one of the experts say, Henry —
It is a Penn 704Z.
Here is one out of the recently acquired reels that have not been sorted yet — 2.9 inches OD on lower part of the spool.
These are basically indestructible tractors.
Best, Fred
THanks Fred,Just wanted to be sure b-4 I tried finding an Emblem .

I looked all over Mystic for that !
THANKS!
I KNOW I am prob stretching it here but
I never liked stickers on reels and always pull them off as it comes out of the box. Ambassadeurs of that era had stickers too.

Well I don't reely care for them either however the lack thereof on this Reel is the basis of this entire thread and all this great info would have gone un - typed or gawked at by over 130 peeps so far .
My Favorite Bumper Sticker is

Afraid not. You can get a new black (sticker-less) rotor cup from Mystic, but that's it:

Again THank You for finding stuff .For some Reason I don't seem to navigate Mystic very well . I dunno maybe it ain't set up for Left handed People.....
I thought the Rotor had a piece missing out of it but apparently is designed that way with the Small u shape missing out of it
Like I said the Reel other than the beat up look it is Dang near perfect ,just needs a thorough cleaning .
I could make some stickers but it doesn't make the Reel work any better.
I have plenty of Reels to redo but this one caught my eye when I got it in with a (114H) so probably will strip it down and repaint it or maybe polish it out .
The 114H just needed a Free Spool Lever and some missing side plate screws and after Cleaning it all up is in better shape than any of my others I bought to mod.
I have @ 65 bucks in both Reels including Shipping so I am a Happy Camper. ;D
Just shows to go even an old Blind Squirrel Finds an Acorn or two now and then.
Sounds like you're all set, Mr. Cat. We'd very much like to see a photo when the reel is all done! ;)

You know, drilling, modifying and painting old spin fishers is a sort of a thing. If you do a decent job they can fetch a price that makes it worth your while.

??? I think "worth your while" has to be a subjective term. :D I find it difficult to imagine what drilling, modifying, painting, etc., I could do to a spinning reel in a 4 hour period that could get me $200+ over the cost of the reel & materials, shipping, etc. I only have a tendency to work on my own & family's reels for less than min. wage. ;D
looks like a pre 2000 704z (old type bail), i just bought another new one of these, no stickers on the rotor cup. my favorite surf reel by far, just have to recover from an ra attack, and i'm goin! probably not today, we have 4" of snow and it's still coming down hard! tight lines, boys chuck

This is kinda of a Dilema dating my Reel as it does weigh more than 21 oz. and is all Metal except for the drag Knob, Has an all Black Rotor, with the Penn made in U.S.A. Double Chrome stripe sticker on Rotor and missing Emblem on the Side Plate .
From everything posted it seems to be a 704Z as shown with Manf. Dates below from MYSTIC . I would think one with all metal and all Black body and Spool would be an Early and the ones with plastic side plate and Gold Blingy Spool the newer . I dunno.
Thanks for all the Response .
i think (not sure) that penn started using the flat paddle handles in the mid 80's, mo at mystic can most likely tell you.
