Title: THIS IS HOW TO POST PICTURES TO THIS SITE
Post by: Dominick on June 24, 2011, 06:02:18 PM
Ok, here goes an explanation of how to post pictures.  This tutorial will be using Photobucket, although some of the other photo storing sites will allow you to do the same.  Both Photobucket and the page where you want to post have to be open.

1.  Upload the photos to Photobucket following the instructions on Photobucket's site.  After the photos are loaded, each photo will have a thumbnail of the photo.  Below the thumbnails of the photos is a blue box and for the purposes of this tutorial ignore the blue box.  Below the blue box is "IMG Code." To the right of IMG code is a clear box that has the start of the IMG code in the box.

2.  Left click on the clear box with the IMG code and it will be highlighted in blue.

3.  Keeping the cursor on the now blue highlighted IMG code right click and a Windows box will appear.

4.  Left click on "copy" in the Windows box.  This will effectively copy the IMG code.

5.  On the post page in Alan's site place the cursor where you want the photo to be copied. Right click and a windows box will appear.  Scroll to paste and left click paste.  This should put the IMG code in the post page.  To test if the photo is there, click on the "Preview" button below the post page to see the photo and how it will look when it is posted.

Dom:  You posted the photobucket link for us to view your collection on photobucket.  If you follow the instructions you will be able to post the pictures on a post on this site.  Dominick

this photo was taken with kevin adams' kids 7 or 8 years ago.  i doubt that i would recognize them.  the first photo with a mellow shot with dad and that photo went out as their christmas photo later that year.  the photo you see was our "growling" shot just goofing off.  they were great kids, and it really hooked me on kid's fishing.  at least now the attachment function works!

This is a Penn 6500SS that I got at least 15 years ago if not older. I never opened it up to clean or regrease it. The only maintenance it got was when I sprayed it down with fresh water after using it. And the occasional spritz of WD40. I stumbled across while looking for something else in the garage. After some thinking, I finally decided to do a full break down. Man, the stuff in there was ffuuuunnkkyyyyy!!!!!!!! eewwww!!!!!

Can anyone tell me how to post a tutorial online with 21 photos?  I would also like to write an explanation under the photos like other tutorials here. What's the best way?
Thanks,
Dom

yes, go to any of the tutorials and hit "quote" to see how they are set up.  you will be using the "img" function from your photobucket or picasa hosting site.  you will have to download the photos to a photo hosting site first.

PS Dom, I usually write it all into a Notepad doc first, so you don't lose anything if your internet connection drops out.
Label the images consecutively before you upload them to Photobucket (or similar), ie DaiwaVentura-1, DaiwaVentura-2 etc.
Then just copy one image code (hover over the picture in Photobucket and you'll see the code options), paste it into the Notepad 21 times and change the number for each step.
Then write your comments before each 'img' tag.
Once you're finished, select all (ie 'Cntrl A'), copy (ie 'Cntrl C') and paste (ie 'Cntrl V') it into Alan's site.
Click 'preview' and it'll pull all the images through from the photo site.
If you run into any issues, let us know.
Good luck, Justin

Apparently, if a photo is deleted from Photobucket, then it is also deleted from this site.  How can that be prevented?

Yes, an image linked here from photobucket no longer appears in posts when it is deleted from photobucket, because the image url no longer exists. Also, if you edit the image(add text, effects, resize, etc.) while keeping the same url the changes appear in your post.

Help!  I did a post with pics and was very disappointed.  I cropped the original image to show mostly subject (reels) and minimize background.  The full size pic still displayed quite large on my monitor so I created a reduced size copy and that is what I linked to in my post.  Was disappointed at how small it displayed.  Tried to replace it with the original full size image but display was no larger in my post.  Image size, pixel count, and file size were all much larger but did not display any larger.  Anyone know why?  Does the forum automatically resize the display?  If not, any idea what happened, what I did wrong?

If using photobucket, here's a "how to" on resizing your pictures/images.

When viewing your album, click on upload.

Once the upload page is brought up, click on customize your upload options.

This will bring up image sizing options. Select size and then save the changes.
I personally use the 800x600 option - the image wont be too big or too small.

Now upload the pictures/images you want posting into a new thread; hit the preview button to view
your thread to see if the image size is acceptable to your wishes. If not, go back to photobucket and
change the image size again. Worth noting, you will have to reupload the same image(s) again for the
sizing changes to work ;)

Hope to have been of help!

Steve,

Dominick,
I got fired from my uncle's restaurant (Arturo's)when I was 15 y/o for telling my Aunt Betty to not assume as it makes an a*s out of you and me.
Needless to say I was a smart a*s kid, and have learned how to speak to my elders, but the old cliche DOES hold true ;)

Ok... got it working.

Some knives that I have made...

1) This is example of linked .jpgs. They should be seen as pictures in here:

   Sewing the sheath:

A note... You could also load pictures to Alan's site. In this case there is no need to first load the image to another site (like photobucket) Is this option not recommended?

Thanks Shark Hunter. I picked up this little gem reel on one of our local auction sites for a good price $60-00 and I think the five plus hours cleaning, polishing, soaking all brass parts in white vinegar for a few hours and fresh grease and oil to the bushed bearings and internals etc have done the Senator 1/0 reel justice.

I think I know why some tests fail.  Ignore the additional options button below the white text box.  After copying the image code paste in this white box.  The image code will show up as an unreadable code.  That's it you have done it.  It really is that simple.  Dominick

Obviously, there are a ton of photo programs out there --

And I may be doing an extra step that is not needed --

I use free photobucket --

If on my iPad -- just take a pic with the iPad -- go to PB -- add the image to your bucket -- it will automatically be resized and oriented properly.

If on my desktop -- have found sometimes things are a little clunkier, probably due to still using Win7 -- but here is what I do.

Make sure the orientation is right when you store the pic -- go into another free program I use called Picasa -- grab the photo and it will be automatically stored in a folder on your desktop for later access -- and Picasa will automatically resize, and confirm orientation for any future use -- particularly when emailing or uploading to PB.

Like I said, there may be, very likely are -- better programs out there -- but for now this is free, easy, and dead simple.  I have around 1300 photos stored in my bucket at PB -- and that is only 1/3 of my storage capacity until they start charging me.  At that point, I will just store the photos somewhere else -- then empty the cache bucket, and start over.

The idea behind using photobucket -- pics are stored somewhere else besides Alan's site, so his storage and bandwidth is not used up on his website host -- and I have access to the pics for other applications besides AT.com.

You may be doing all of this -- but unless the pics are Internet ready, they may not orient properly, because they are too large of a format, for no reason.

Best,

Fred

Luis, you are correct there are other ways to post photos.  We all mostly use a photo hosting site because only the code for the photo resides on the AT site.  If everyone who posted photos actually posted the photo it would not take long for the site to start slowing down because of the amount of file space needed to keep a photo on the site.  So the eventuality of too many postings of photos directly to the site will result in the moderators having to erase the photos not hosted by outside sites like Photobucket.  At least this is the way I understand it.  I'll confirm this with Mike "Bluefish69."  Dominick

Posting pics and getting them to "fit" was always a problem for me before I found this. Super easy.

That's a nice trick.

Does anyone use a picture storage site other than PhotoBucket?  Can photos be installed from the Tani site photo gallery?

By the way, I found that changing my camera resolution to 1024 x 768 gave me the best clarity posting pictures on my Nikon Coolpix 6200 that I didn't have to resize.

Not sure if the picture showed up where I wanted it to though.

(//)It looks like it is below the written text area, like where you have the picture of your boat. I'll go back and read through this thread more carefully. I'd like to be able to insert pictures between lines of text.

That explains the anomaly then. Yes you need some outside picture host like photobucket, picturetrail, etc. You should be able to insert the image link anywhere you want within the text. Just put your cursor at the beginning of the next line below the text where you want it. I usually try to leave one open line/space between so things don't look so crowded.

when you add a post, there is a button that says "additional options."  click on that, then look for the "attach: choose file" button and click on that.  you can upload photos that way.  alternatively, i can give you access to our gallery and you can host your photos on this website just like you would on photobucket, only i won't hold your photos hostage and try to extort money from you when you get to a certain number of photos.

Well, it looks like I can post a link to my google photos on here, but it links back to my google account...so that is a no-go. I'm sure that there is someway for me link just a single photo from google on here, I just have to apply the old "10% rule" to this problem.  Thus far, unfortunately, I have not been 10% smarter than the equipment I'm working on.

More tinkering to follow...

Hi, from your Google account, you should be able to download the pic to your local computer, and then use the "additional options" to upload/attach the pic on your local computer to a post on AT.

By contrast, if you post on AT with a  link to a photo on another site (Google, Photobucket, etc.) there are two technical limitations to making that work:
1) The photo on AT will only show as long as the photo exists on the other site.   If you delete the photo from Google, it will not appear on AT anymore (because the AT instance is just a pointer to the Google one).
2) Google account use https (secure connection).  If you post a link to a Google photo on AT, the ability to see it depends on the viewer having a secure connection (Google account and password).  If that person is not logged onto Chrome with a Google username/password that you have specifically authorized to view the photo, they will see nothing (or a broken link symbol.)  You might be able to see your own pics, while other do not.  I think Photobucket and other similar services are different from Google in that way. They don't require the same authentication; anyone can see the pictures anonymously if they have the link.

Hope that helps.

I don't mean to blow this post up, I'm trying to get my Google photo account to play nice with this site. I have all of my photos on that and would really like to figure out how to post a pic from there so I don't have recreate work on Photobucket.

test 2

I can appreciate that you need to test and you are welcome to do so.  There is an option to delete you own posts, to clean up afterwards.   Cheers, /Joe

For those that use Photobucket, even though your album is private, once you post the link to the pic every photo in the album can be viewed by clicking on the one photo posted. You can then scroll through others on that album. If you don't want people to see every photo you have stored on their site you should have multiple albums or sub albums. If you put one photo in an album that is all that will be seen. If you have ten photos in an album all ten can be accessed by simply clicking on any of the ten photos.

Almost every time I post a photo in a new subject I create a new album, or sub-album, unless, that is, I am re-utilizing a photo that I have previously posted.

QuoteWe all mostly use a photo hosting site because only the code for the photo resides on the AT site.

This is all true.  It is much lighter (less server processing power and storage space) on alantani.com to post photos as links to other sites.  The drawback is that when those photos are no longer available at the same web address (URL), they no longer will show on this site.

I don't post a lot of photos, but I would like to be sure that they last.  Also, it is a bit frustrating when I find an interesting thread with key photos missing.

In the end, it is something for the moderators to consider, because more storage and processing power will increase operating cost at some point.

I've seriously had it with Photobucket. Their "new and improved" = hard to get to your own photo library and when you do get there, it's all pop-up spam that then buries it....

Mo, I wouldn't know what photo site to use; I don't use any myself, but have some suggestions.  Firstly, which browser do you use?  I use Chrome, and have AdBlock running with it to block pop-ups and advertisements, if that is the problem.

If you have a Google account (it is free, and you can use your existing email as an ID) you could try Google Photos. How do you take most of your photos?  Probably there is a way to reference Apple photos in posts, but I would have to look into it?

Also, you can use the Gallery feature on this site to upload photos, to reference in postings.  That way the photos get stored on alantani.com and there is less chance of a photos disappearing from your posting.

What do you think would work best for you?

/Joe

I don't upload to alantani due to the potential bogging down of the site.

We have multiple google accounts for personal and business, so maybe I'll look into that option.

Browser-wise I use Chrome and Mozilla, depending which computer I'm on...sometimes both at the same time.
I may try the Chrome ad-block first and see if that resolves the issue with Photobucket....

Thanks!

Easy Photobucket Fix

In the cases where former/current PhotoBucket users haven't deleted all their albums.
Chrome and Firefox now have an extension, Photobucket Embed Fix,  that will display 3rd party hosted images.
It will fix all your broken pics, no need for you to do anything, it runs entirely in the background.

Click Tools>Add-Ons (Or press CTL+Shift+A) >select Extensions > enter "photobucket embed" in the Search box (upper right corner) > then click the install button.

Done! All your old pics should now be displaying again.

Please Note:

This will only work for those using Chrome and/or Firefox and who have installed the Add-on/Extension.

Those using other browsers or without the Add-on will still see broken links.

The "Add-On" will allow you to VIEW photo's, BUT you are not able to SAVE them ( by "conventional means" ).

If you are using Windows, ( I use Windows 7, 64-Bit ) the Snipping Tool can be used to save images.

Hopefully it will.  Tech details on the extension say that it works by modifying the "referer" on the link, so that the PB server does not know that you are coming to the photo from a 3rd party site.   I doubt that PB has the resources to counteract it.  It's a cat-and-mouse game, and the mice are winning for now ;D
