Title: P440 and P454 spool
Post by: Oahutaco on July 25, 2014, 06:39:13 AM
Recently I've been trying to read and understand the coding for newell reels.. Also I'm trying to find a replacement spool.. What is the difference between a p440 and p454 spool? Does it have to do with gear ratio? Or reel width?

Here's a little something I wrote up awhile back. It's a sticky. Go about halfway down the thread.

The only difference between those two spools is the width.

Carl's numbering system was setup in a logical manner. For example

440 model equates to 400 (last two numbers plus 0) yards of 40# (first number plus 0) tournament grade mono line. This same logic applies for all model numbers.

454 equates to 540 yds of 40# tournament grade mono.

Thanks of the info... I kinda figured the 440 would fit in a 454 frame..

440 is a narrow spool and 454 is a wide spool. Side plates are the same. You can take the side plates and put any spool width and post and base combo you want.

Might as well put a Tiburon topless N454/546 topless one piece alum frame, and matching alum spool (N454/546S) on it.

Meant to say that the 440 wouldn't fit in the 454 because of it being narrow.. [

I'm trying to keep the Newell's original... Trying to find a spool that one of the Newell's were missing... I tried using a tiburon spool but didn't like how it rubbed a little on the inside area of the sideplate ring..
