Some reports of BFT 80 miles south of Point Loma. I can't confirm this but the "talk" has people looking with word of some larger models in the mix.
If I can gather better info I'll post it.

I'm wondering if we're going to have to practice casting anchovies on 40# line. That'll be a challenge.

We might, that's why I always practice, practice practice casting. I truly believe on a pick-biite, casting a bait away from the boat is what makes a difference.
Btw, we could use our trout outfits to fight 80# BFT. ;D

Even a 12-weight outfit. :-\ ;D
I'm just going to find the best caster on the boat and buy him beers to cast mine ;D
In the 25 year run I had chartering the SOA, and our group targeted BFT if any were able to be caught passing up better chances at other fish, I found casting not as important as getting a bait to swim down and out away from the boat. Casting often stuns a bait as it hits the water, splashing down making noise and acting injured, which can be a good thing for surface feeding fish. BFT are not often chasing surface bait like albacore, YFT and yellowtail around paddies offshore, they tend to stay deep and away from the boat. A good method is to butt hook your bait and do a soft underhand lob cast to get the bait swimming down and out. Many times you have to do a long soak of a 100 yards or more before you get into the zone. I also like longer mono toppers when using smaller or weaker bait for BFT as this helps the bait get down better as spectra floats. Does this make a big difference? I don't know but it makes me feel better.
Good luck on your trips guys.
That's how I've always worked deep bate. I hook a chovie in the collar if I'm casting and right behind the dorsal if I'm sending him down. Especially if I'm fly lining, the hook sitting on top seems to force the bait deeper, or at least that's what I tell myself. I know that it works if you are trying to get the bait down fast before a mackerel hits it.
Ron
I also heard a commercial fishing vessel in Mexico, about 700 miles SW, brought in 600+ albacore.
H & M report today: The first BLUEFIN of the year was caught on the Top Gun 80 on their 1-1/2 day offshore trip last weekend! She was a beauty weighing in at 67 pounds. 10 others were hooked, but got away. 24 Yellowtail were also caught!
I'm a rookie but this seems to be a good sign ;D
Uh, yes, this is good!!
Ron
That's great news, hoping for another great BFT season! I've got a 4-day trip going in August on the Pacific Voyager, it's going to be rough hearing bout all the tuna between now and then..
I will update everyone on my 2 dayer this weekend. We are still doing a rockcod/yellowtail trip but if we get any report prior to Friday that the BFT are closing in, I think the trip will switch to a offshore BFTs hunt. Probably will have to bump up the cost a little bit.
2nd bluefin of the season also caught by topgun today along with 36 yt
I just don't have 33 days of anticipation in me! Get here June!!

Hello anglers, We are happy to report that there has been several spots of fish seen by another Fishermans Landing boat! The Royal Polaris saw fish as close as 150 miles from home in calm weather yesterday. The fish that they saw up close were 20-40 pound bluefin tuna. Sounds exciting!

I am going out of my mind here. 40 Pound tuna will be just perfect, big enough for me to test the Tuna Special and will be an absolute BLAST on Bryan's Pacifica 2000. Here fishy fishie!!
Ron
the eclipse out of seaforth got into some football yellowfins abd decent size bluefins on their 2 days trip this weekend. i was tempted to jump on that boat after my trip was cancelled this weekend.

Went out on San Diego Bay yesterday on my raft and, at 8:30 am, hooked up to a mud marlin 100 yds south of Coronado bridge tower #18.
Was fishing a Penn 9 on a 5'6" Penn Mariner 12-25lb with 17lb Cajun Red (Bimini Twist & Yucatan) to 20lb Big Game leader, spider hitch dropper loop, a Size 1 Eagle Claw L702 circle, and a strip of squid. Drag was set at 3.5 lbs (set by hand on the water and measured after getting home). That thing circled my raft twice and made at least 6 good runs. Pulled up slowly and reeled down fast; got it up to the side for a release after 30 mins--it was foul hooked in the left wing. There was enough stress that the L702 had started to straighten.
Gave me flashbacks to BFT fishing last year--it was my antidote.

mud marlin = bat ray. they have the tendency to do a coupke jimps after the initial hook up. hence the nick name.
regarding maxpowers post #20.. I'm pretty sure that you all will be glad to hear that these yellow fin tuna were caught about 120 miles from San Diego.

If BFT are available will we just target them and skip the YT? If so the gear we need to bring can be drastically reduced.
I'd like to get some BFT but YT make me happy.

I found that out on my first LR trip, I could have brought 3 100/130 rigs and 1 40 rig (bait making) and left the rest at home. Who would have guessed we would plug the boat with cows on a 10 day.
Just in from Fisherman's Landing:

TopGun 80 limited out on the tuna and still have time left to fish on their 2 1/2 days trip. Incredible.
So,
when the limit is 5 fish a day then is that five tuna or five game fish or what.
Ron
Top Gun takes 25 passengers on these 2.5-day trips, so... 5x25 = 125, but they also caught YFTs and the crew presumably can add their counts, so... it all adds up to mighty excellent fishing! 8)

I believe on a 2.5 day you can have a double limit ? At least here on the central coast on a overnighter you can double up.
I'm watching you tube videos on Bluefin/Yellowfin tuna fishing, then I figure if I stay at a Holiday Inn express prior to the trip I won't be rookie ;D ;D ;D
the limit is 30 fish per trip with no more than 10 per days of which no more than 5 of each species. bottom line is on 2.5 days trips you can in theory limit out since you will have 3 days limit. that plus the crew and the boat limit will probably plug the boat. we'll get the counts tomorrow unless some of the boats opted to come in early. i wondered if they found any yellowtails on the paddies?

Evidently so; this, from Fisherman's Landing: "The

It all sounds extremely promising. :)

From CONAPESCA's web site, which is Mexico's Department of Fish and Game.
MEXICAN SPORTFISHING REGULATIONS
When operating a boat that carries fishing equipment in Mexican waters, it is necessary to hold a valid fishing license for everybody aboard the boat, regardless of age and whether fishing or not. A Fishing License is not required when fishing from land.
Only one rod or line with hook is permitted in the water, per person, but there is no restriction regarding the number of replacement items.
A fishing license allows to capture fin fish only. It does not allow to capture any crustaceans or mollusks, with the exception of squid, and their capture by anyone is strictly prohibited. Totuaba, turtles and marine mammals are under protection of the Ministry and may not be captured at any time.
To capture bottom fish, up to four hooks on a vertical line may be used.
The use of electric reels is restricted to disabled fishermen only, after written authorization for the Ministry before use.
BAG AND POSSESSION LIMITS
In ocean waters and estuaries the limit is a total of ten fish per person per day, with no more than 5 catches of a single specie, except of the species of the "Billfishes", Shark and Giant Seabass (Stereolepis gigas), of which only one specimen from this group is allowed per day, and which counts a five toward the overall 10 fish limit, or Dorado, Roosterfish, Shad or Tarpon, and Gulf Grouper (Mycyteroperca jordani), of which only two samples from this group are allowed, and which count as five toward the overall 10 fish limit.
Limit on inland bodies of water (rivers, lakes, dams, etc.) is five fish per day, whether of a single specie or in combination.
Underwater fishing is limited to a total of five fish and/or squid per day, using rubber band, spring or pneumatic harpoons, and only while skin diving.
There is no limit to the practice of "catch and release", as long as the fish that exceed the bag limit be returned to their environment in good survival condition.
Where sportfishing is conducted from boats out at sea for longer than three days, the bag limit will be the equivalent of three times the amounts mentioned above.
I do believe 30 fish is enough for anyone. We will fish for 3 days if I am correct. I've caught way more than 10 albacore in a day but pulling in 10 30-40 pound bluefin is an entirely different kettle of fish. Reckon by then I'd be tuckered good.
Ron

Ron: I don't know how it has been interpreted but here is a quote from Socalangler's post. "In ocean waters and estuaries the limit is a total of ten fish per person per day, with no more than 5 catches of a single specie"... The ten total means only 5 Tuna plus a combination of 5 of other species. There are several other combinations too lengthy to go into. However, of the Tuna species 5 BFT or YFT or a combination is all you are allowed according to the Conapesca quotation. Dominick
Sorry,
I missed the math. Cool, 5 tuna a day is still more than enough for me to feel like a solid days work. Ron
Don't forget this part "Where sportfishing is conducted from boats out at sea for longer than three days, the bag limit will be the equivalent of three times the amounts mentioned above". If you have travel days where you fish only a little or days that the bite is off you can make up your catch on other days.
I said a while back in another thread that not enough fish was seldom a problem but on the other hand taking too much was an issue for me. Donations for the needy is very simple just let the processor know what if any fish you want to donate and they take care of it and there is always catch and release.
EDIT: Frozen BFT is not the best table fare and if you do have RSW fish, you can only keep it for a while before it has to be eaten or frozen.
I process all of my fish and have problems with YFY over 150# and in the past have donated them to the boat recommended charities. I do not "donate" YT, wahoo or if I get any on the upcoming trip BFT. I will give fish to friends that do not fish and have even been known to give wahoo away.
When we lived in Alaska we ate seafood I harvested 5 + times a week and consumed 45-60 sockeye, 200-300 pounds of halibut, dozens of coho and 5-10 king salmon a year. We also consumed 6 deer, 2 bear, 2 mountain goat a year and when "lucky" a moose would be split with friends. We harvested 50 abalone (a individual daily limit) 3 times a year and many rock scallops and clams. Two or three times a year we would harvest geoduck clams too!
We love fresh seafood.
Fisherman's Landing score for the weekend thus far:
Condor returned with 154 Bluefin, 111 Yellowfin and 1 yellowtail for 26 guys on a 2.5 day trip
Prowler returned with 11 Yellowtail and 2 Yellowfin for 29 people on a 1.5 day trip.
Shogun returned with 241 Bluefin, 21 Yellowfin and 4 Yellowtail for 33 people on a 2.5 day trip.
Excelsior! :D

TopGun 80. 250 BFT ( 30-60 lbs) 50+ YFT 25 anglers. so on average 500 lbs of fish per anglers and probably 200 + lbs of fish processed..that's some trip..

don't worry about casting. it's like riding a bicycle. it will come back to you.
Just underhand it into the wind and let it swim away.

two and a half weeks..... ;D
I am going to bookend your trip. I am on the trip the weekends of the 14-15 and then again the 21-22. Anyone want to test out the Fin nor Lethal? I can leave it with you guys on Sunday 6-15 and you can send it back to me after the trip. You will need a spinning rod though as the cost to ship the rod is expensive.
With the early season fishing you guys are gonna kill it big time down there! I might have to jump in on this next year.

with good quality sardines, they'd probably be knockin' em' dead!
pac voyager had 4 pushing 100 lbs and one at 77 and some smaller ones. Looks like a combination of baits and people still afraid to fish with the big guns and opting for smaller reels. Same thing happened to Pac Queen. Hooked up a bunch and landed only 6.
Hey guys,
I don't go any bigger than a 60# reel. Am I gonna be out gunned? I can't gear up bigger right now.
Ron
Ron,
You will be fine. When I referred to those insisting on fishing small guns, i meant people fishing reels such as avet sx, sxj, etc..these smaller reels do have the drag capacity but not the line capacity. Get into a good fish and you could be spooled in a couple of minutes. I would say when the potential of big'uns are around, nothing less than 500 yards capacity should be used.
