Sorry to say Alan Jack passed away last night. R.I.P Jack.
Welcome to the land of Oz. Best thing about Australia is that no matter where you are you'll be able to find a fish to catch from frozen highlands and snowy peaks to hot desert springs, from giant freshwater rivers to 600ft sea canyons. Fish fill almost every niche environment down here. Lets hope you get to catch a few new species to add to your list.
Also pop your head into a few tackle stores and have a look we have a special market of fishing gear down here that isn't found elsewhere. Us Aussie tend to be pretty harsh on our equipment and it's the perfect place for companies to feild test their products.
Just remember if you want to fit in down here just start every conversation with G'day mate, how's it goin'? and you'll fit right in. ;D

Some from other countries seem to tend to think that we speak too quickly. Its not that at all.... We do tend to run one word into another, such as
'Owyagoinmatedija'aveagoodweegend? which, translated into English is How are you, how was your weekend? Some say.... that it has its origins in the sheer number of flies that seemed to at one stage inhabit this Lucky country and that you had to keep your mouth open for as little time as possible, but no-one knows for sure. ;) ;) ;)
Anyway, have a great flight down here and I hope you have a great time while you're here. I do promise you we don't all talk like a machine gun.
Regards, or if you like

Great pics Alan - Sydney's a beautiful city...
Cheers, Justin
this IS an incredibly beautiful city!!!!!! hard to believe it's all in one place. so many small harbors, so much history. we had the bus tour of the city this morning and the harbor tour this afternoon. i would love to have my boat up here. i actally saw a grady white center console in one of the harbors. the ferry captain had two sail boats cross his bow. had to throw it into reverse twice to avoid a collision. we will try to see the maritime museum this afternoon and have dinner in china town, then catch the fireworks if there are on tonight. more photos!
i have noticed that people drive faster here than in the states. or perhaps it is just because the roads are a bit narrower. our bus driver, paul, was incredibly skillful. he has a 13 year old that is mad about fishing, so we got to talk fishing a little.
Sounds like you guys are having a blast. Enjoy and don't worry about us.
I don't suppose you are passing through Townsville (North Queensland) at any stage Alan?
not sure. we fly to ayers rock, then to alice springs, then to cairns, then to brisbane, then home!

went to chinatown last night for dinner. headed to the blue mountains on a bus tour today. we have a free dau tomorrow. the skies are clouded over and there has been a light drizzle all night. it looks like a typical san francisco winter pattern.
Wow! I feel like you're my tour guide... I agree, keep 'em coming!

two nights ago, we headed to chinatown for dinner. it was a place called "tai" something and it was close the arch on the north end of the street. yesterday, we took a tour to the blue mountains and saw the three sisters, then back to leura for lunch, then to the zoo and finally the olympic village. last night we had tapaa and paella at capitan torres. nice place!

they were tasty, but very small.

Probably every nationality fries dough and sweetens it. Justin you are right given the choice we would all eat sweets if it was healthy. Zeppolis aren't always filled with custard or jelly. Just fried dough with powdered sugar is good eating, just like beignets. By the way, I've been working on gluten free beignets. When I get it right, I'll send you the recipe. I had gluten free chocolate cake for my birthday yesterday. Dominick

Very nice shots Alan, I'm enjoying everyone of your pictures. You mentioned that you've seen lots of sandstone architecture, maybe they did try granite...like us italians and probably found out that it was just too hard to work with :-\ ;D.
Look like a beautiful country. Thanks for sharing.

Also did you get to play a didgeridoo? Dominick
Alan,
Those are some sweet aerial shots, and glad to see you're getting better weather.
Let me know how much I owe for my end of this trip ;D
Thanks for making us a part of it,
Dom
PS- I have shared your photos with my family and friends, and their loving 'em, too!
Well done Alan & Fam.. Amazing... :o
WOW! i'm having one of the best tours of my life without spending a dime...thanks for sharing!
glad you guys are getting a bargain, because we certainly are not. stuff is really expensive here. i got a burn phone at the beginning of the trip but spend $100 in internet charges at the hotel before getting my own prepaid wifi hotspot. i burned up all of that loading the last round of photos and was then unable to recharge the hotspot because of credit card problems with telstra, the australian internet provider. it seems that services here are at least 10 years behind the US. well, i got a couple of extra gigs after being on the phone with telstra for an hour. now i'm worried about running out of minutes on my phone! anyway, we finished up with ayer's rock, alice springs, a free day in cairns, a day in karunda and a day of snorkeling today at the great barrier reef. tomorrow we fly to brisbane to stay with peter boyd until friday. then we fly home. if i can get this internet problem sorted out, i will post more photos.
Whoa... that's steep :o
I guess we should chip in cause we're on this tour, too ;D
... Hey, it's only money, and we can't take it with (when we kick the bucket) us so work hard/ play hard, enjoy, pal
Dom
there are two big rocks that are close to each other. one is ayer's rock that you already saw. the other is a group called the olga's.

they had a videographer there, so i hope that the family will not object to these few photos. the services were very dignified and the memorials offered by family and friends were very moving. while the family was at a private memorial, friends gathered at a local pub to exchange stories. he was a great man and will be sorely missed.
the pub was called "the cock and bull" and you can see why mr. erskine came here so often. i was told that it was one of his favorite pubs.

one of the largest tackle shops on the east coast of australia is the tackle warehouse in brisbane.
i had exchanged some e-mails with the guys there about getting reel parts shipped over. it's a huge shop, probably on par with the outdoor proshop in oakland, california.

Good to see you were all rugged up around the Alice , was our coldest August morning here in Adelaide for many years this morning.

Alan,
There's too much to comment about, but the highlights for me were that AWESOME tackle warehouse, the Jack Kennedy reel, The great barrier reef, the hurse that drove Jack to his finally resting place (RIP), and all the smiles on your families' faces... Joy looks like she's having a blast! Happy wife, happy life ;)
Thank you again for sharing a beautiful experience,
Dom
PS- I never saw anybody come back from Australia without a tan... is it chilly all over there now (winter) , or are the coasts warm enough to bronze a body?
Just Simply amazing..
What a trip so far!!! (and you took us all along with you)!!!
yeah, it's the dead of winter right now. it's 7:40 am and 46 degrees outside. pretty chilly.
Wow holy Alvey warehouse!
Quite a place.
Thank you for shareing.

for the last leg of our trip, peter and eva boyd were our hosts. they have beautiful home in brisbane and they have two totally spoiled afghan hounds. they have started a small business after being retired for 10 years, and have been importing extra low voltage heat shrink terminals. these come in from pensacola, florida, and are mil spec, ul certified and are a quarter of the price of the asian imported equivalents that are commonly used in australia now.
i haven't mentioned this before, but the prices of things here are totally absurd. a burger costs $10. a coke from a vending machine costs $4. a brand new grady white 258 might sell for $200K. peter and eva's electrical terminals are a quarter the price of the stuff being imported from asia.

he also carries a full range of shrink tubing.
now here is the interesting stuff. some of the shrink tubing is clear and is filled wth adhesive. it shrinks down to a quarter of it's orignal diameter. it would be great for rigging double hook rigs for marlin.

Always nice to see US exporting goods....we need to see more of that.
BTW, I'm really enjoying all of your shots, thanks!

Nice to see Peter broke out the good stuff for his guests ;)
Dom
They look great. glad to get out on the boat with Peter when he was here...sorry we missed dinner though. I hear his fish fry is the bomb.
And I'm esp. glad that those terminals are UL certified. ;D
What a great trip, here's another vote for the wiring job.
Glad your enjoying Aussie hospitality!
Pakula ! i tried a few ss hooks of theirs . Havnt missed a hit yet , awsome product , best game hook ive ever used.
Harry
Welcome back Alan. Sorry I missed your call, and am glad you and your family are home safe and sound. Can I revert the parts shipment back to you? Parts alone is a full time job. No wonder you have Jim, Jon, Roger and myself helping with the reel repair/upgrades. I think we need to hire my wife for this...what do you think? She'll work for food... ;D
QuoteI think we need to hire my wife for this...
Good call Bryan - '

Welcome back Alan.
From all the activities that you've been up to, looks like you'll need another vacation ;D
We are back on Monday. Will see Moderator Rob for Dinner tonight. Maybe I should strap Rob to the roof of my car and drag him to the staff meeting that I will miss :( and Rob too :(
Thank you for shareing your vacation photos. Very nice.
I also recieved one of those bogus Alan Tani emails and suppose many others did as well.
I asked John to send the Karma gift to you for the kids fishing program . Sorry I should have asked if the stuff would be usefull .

Bryan - I don't like roofs. But if you have a roof rack, I can hold on and stand on the back bumper. :o
we have another kid's trip on thursday. stay tuned!
I'm there. Hope you can join in Alan.
ok, last morning in brisbane! peter was up early as usual. eva, too! she made a nice breakfast for us, including LOTS of coffee!

the ride home was bumpy as hell! it was 11:30am by the time we lifted off. as soon as we did, i reset my watch to california time, which was 6:30pm. from about 10pm to 2am pst, we were getting bounced around pretty badly. somewhere around 2am i felt the plane accellerate. i think the pilot climbed up a few thousand feet to get us out of the turbulance. it was alot smoother after that.
we arrived in los angeles at 6:30am and hopped a turbo prop puddle jumper from los angeles to san jose. i got a window seat this time.
