Just did a little research and found they are brushed chrome, so am assuming that is chromed brass. They feel a little heavy for aluminium.
The inner sideplates are black chromed.

Basto
but they will handle the boat rash and hits better than aluminium
Yes, they have stood up well considering their age.
Yes guys
You are right with brass being used on the side-(//)plates of the Ambassadeur 12.
It is the same reel as the Striper 8600
and I believe the old rare blue Ambassadeur 8500
I found an old 8500 with most blue paint removed and it shows up as brass too,'Polishes nice to appear as a Gold 8500.
I indulged in this luxury as I already had a near mint blue 8500.
Nice motors, all.
The Abu 12's came in two types of finishes. They were known as Chromies and Frosties - one shiney and one not. Both had brass plates.

Yes, my memories from the eighties are that the one in my "Tight Lines" catalogue looked like a light grey colour compared to this one`s silvery look.
