If I was driving I would have Bryan, Mike and Rick had 6 and 7 more hours to go to get home.

Quote from: Reeltyme on Today at 09:45:54 AMMy wife keeps wooden "skewers" in the kitchen for shish kebabs. They have some nice length, small diameter and a pointed end. Dollar store item. Great for not scratching your reel!

Another cool idea! I have a couple of duff engraved Mitchell side plates (worn main shaft bushings), so when I get a chance, I'll try some of these ideas out (just recovering from an op at the moment, so I can't get out and about so well.....not long to wait though...hopefully).  8)

Quote from: Gfish on May 16, 2024, 10:53:13 PMReally like the looks of the Vamp reels. A metal handle-knob? They "look" well made. Except, of course, for the absence of a line roller. Gonna guess that good functioning line roller is expensive to make. Think of how much line runs through something that small in diameter. Plus the bearing part(s) should be pretty water resistant.
Did "the House of Hardy" ever make any spinning reels?

Yes, those Vamp reels are really cool, and (to answer your question) like the Hardy Altex in some ways, a little more quirky perhaps than the Hardy, though ultimately, I believe the Altex to be a more hand crafted reel.
The French Mepps Vamp handle knob seems to be a kind of hard plastic, but I may be wrong; it is certainly quite robust.

Re: Hardy Spinning reels continued.

Hardy also made the Exalta and a more basic model called the Hardex (not sure if they made any other spinning type reels?

This is my own Hardy Altex No2 MkV.

I was wondering if the drag washer thickness is critical - especially the under gear one? I replaced all the washers with carbontex on my ABU 7500C. I cut them myself from a 0.5 mm sheet. I have since found out that the under-gear washer is supposed to be 1 mm. Will it affect the meshing with the pinion gear or free spool operation? The reel seems to work alright, though what about wear in the long term?
