Was having an off-line convo with Randy about choring getting in front of fishing projects. I realized I hadn't built but maybe one reel and one rod in about 18 months, (and that was a 4400ssg rebuild so not too exciting) and only one offshore trip which didn't go well. So, I have posted about zero pics. I know there are folks on here doing the work, let's see some pics! It seems to have slowed down in the past year, and I know part of why that is, but show your work! You may think it small, but there's always someone who is in their first try at it....and keeps the rest of going in the middle of servicing mowers, building decks, painting houses, etc, etc.
I'll do my end and try to load some on this new-fangled site layout if I can figger it out....
John
I'm off to a slow start. Finally have everything to include some graphics (a flag and a military crest) but I will make sure to document the build.
I'm playing around with guides, this is too many for a surf spinning rod. Also need to make a makeshift lathe out of a drill to shape the grip a bit.
I'll make a new thread as I get this in motion.

dang skippy !
Crap. Nick, I coould've sent cork grips. Didn't occur to me.
:fish
Some old stuff but something to see anyway.
OK, I have ordered an expensive blank to build what I suspect may be my final rod that I can say I made myself.
I just decided impulsively to see if its worth paying 3 X the price of a local or Eastern ( that may not be correct) made blank and got a Black Hole Striped Bass 10ft 1-6oz. It will be a light Yellowtail Rod.
I don't make beautiful rod, just functional and durable. The youngsters have all been telling me what nice Rods these are! Ill probably start in a week ot two by fitting guides, tip and reel seat with tape to go casting and see the bend to get the correct no of guides and correctly spaced.
Maybe Ill post some photos.

I have this little DAM Quick 110 on the bench right now. Does this count 🤔. Bill
I guess so, I can't unsee it now! Was that lubricated in the La Brea tar pit???? lol. Great reel!
Should be pristine when you get done, being packed in cosmoline like a 1946 Moisin!

not munch into reel mods lately since I think Im set with my current ones (yeah, right), right now Im into replacing my factory rods for all custom rods in my arsenal, Im having problems to replace the Phenix Black Diamond 760h, okuma inshore stalker 801XH and phenix axis 820H because I like the actions of those rods but I dont know what to build without personally flexing and testing some blanks ooh well
Alex, just rebuild them then! If you like them so much now, you'll love them when they're custom.
I've built quite a bit so far this year. In fact I worry I'm overposting. I'm definitely overspending.

thats what I was thinking, but I like to put my personal touch from the rear grip to the tiptop, I have already rebuilt few of my personal rods before I was getting into 100% custom building from the scratch, so far I already sold half my factory rods arsenal and waiting for some the blanks to arrive.
I prefer that someone get a nice rod for a decent price so, I can get the money for the blank and components for a new one, just for the pleasure of building it and actually use it as "presentation card".
it feels kind of weird to build many custom rods lately for friends and few customers while I still using factory rods to fish LOL, well not all of them are factory but my fancy ones that I use are factory made. ::) ::) so, NO MORE ! :o 8)
have you seen this one that I rebuilt on the quarantine time?

Ive reached the point where I look at my first couple builds and wonder how long til I can't take it anymore and rebuild them so the wraps look better.

I know the feeling
Not fishing related but I have been "building something" for a few months.

OK, John —-
I'll take the challenge.
Working on a bunch of spinner restore jobs today.
In between them being washed in the US cleaner —- I will put these (2) Senators together.
Just pulled New Old Stock parts out of the bins —- plus got a spool donated
from Randy & Dominic, for the 9/0.
Plus, another spool from a good member for the tiny 1/0.
Don't need them, but since I have the parts set aside from the bins —- might as well give it a go to see how far I can get with these.
Have worked on so many of these —- I can picture and name every part in my sleep.
Best, Fred
Now I love seeing a Senator come together especially with Fred's restorative skilzzzz (after pics too, please sir!), but Lee, what be that???!!!! That looks like something I'd use in my professional life, like a pre-press powder dehydrator / granulator. Or, a couple pipes away from a big batch of beer!!!!
Henry, where's the 155?
Cor, can't wait to see the rod build.
[/quote] great pictures john
thanks, Harry! meaning to send you a note, hope you're doing well and able to get out in the warmer weather!

Sweet save!
Then there are these Cortez Baja Plates I been playing with .
yessss.
keep it coming folks!
Henry, is that the US 113 standard width frame from the reel you bought with the rat bites in it? If it is it sure looks great after all the filling in & painting. I like the detailing on the plates too. Rudy

Nope I fixed the Bridge plate on that one did some more work on the frame and got it all back together and it does look a bunch better . May just sell it .
The one pictured above is a BRAND NEW 113USW I just acquired . Have a new modified Bridge for it and THINKING bout putting these plates on it ....... Got a little more edge work to do on those . I like the Highlights I am Getting on the Edges.

It's a algae dryer.
Haven't worked on a reel for over a year because my reel bench has been occupied with this old Silvertone archtop. A friend gave it to me years ago and it ain't worth much. It needed a neck reset so I just set it in the corner on a stand. About a year ago I decided to reset the neck just to say I had done one. It doesn't even have a truss rod so I'm trying to get the back bow out of the neck. While I was at it I decided to inlay diamond abalone fret markers, dot neck edge markers and do a couple of headstock inlays. It's been a tedious and time consuming project, and easy to put off. I need to get it done so I can get back to playing with my reels. ;)

I have picked up a couple of reels to fondle and admire, though. Once I get that Silvertone playable and off the desk I'll be servicing these gems. A Penn 705, Penn 711, Penn 710, Zebco Omega 850L, Cargem 23 Lancer and an ABU Cardinal 4 I picked up for $5.00 at a flea market in March. The lighting makes the 711 medallion look amber but it is silver. That reel was displayed on a rod but has never had line on it.

I built an improvised rod transport system.
Does that count?

I don't think I've ever done that for aesthetic reasons, but often to make it a better working rod! I once not so long ago turned a normal rod into an acid wrap as an experiment.
Lol, thanks for posting up John. I was thinking the same thing.
But it's raining so I've been playing with my new toy pocket pistol. (Beretta .25 acp).

Just let me know if you need anything for this little DQ 110, Bill —-
Glad to send it down , at N/C.

I thought maybe so...I recalled you harvesting. Sweet.
Put these (2) Senators together out of 95% new parts from the bins in between working on DQ's and others for clients.
Little 1/0 & 9/0.
Upgraded the drags to CF & SS.
Put a stronger set of post bars on the 1/0.
And both reels got a SS clamp with the ring lock.
Best, Fred
That's two reels I can't have enough of.
Will this do?

Have a few photos how I go about making the handles, which I will put up soon.
Wow, great looking reel, that handle makes it pop. I got a couple 3/0 size. I need to get busy
Flushed Chris out of hiding in the bushes!!! Yesssss!
I reckon that qualifies Chris - nice reel. I've got an epoxy handle blank that looks remarkably similar to that - I'm keen to see how you made yours.
Mike
PS Wow , that was quick

Beautifully done, Rothmar!!
Nice color choices.
