Title: First Look at the Tiburon 20/0 Senator Frames: A Work in Process
Post by: Vintage Offshore Tackle on May 16, 2018, 09:11:01 PM
I went to Tiburon on Monday and the frames have all had their first few machining passes.  Still need to be drilled and polished, then off to be anodized.  The spools are next.  Hope that you like it!

Here are the photos, with a Tiburon P16 Penn 146 Squidder Jr. frame for comparison.

Now that's the BIG DOG!!!! ;D

Looks great Randy. There's gonna be a bunch of happy people. It would probably take 20 squidder frames to make that 20/0.

Nice work!

My squidders will now have an inferiority  complex!!!!  Then again so will the jiggys 4/0s and 6/0s next to that monster.  I don't even fish above a 4/0 single speed size and I want one!  Nice work Randy!

Thank you Chris.  Regarding the finish, as some of these reels are going to be hard at work for land-based shark fishermen, it will be necessary to anodize them.  I have asked that the appearance of the finished silver product be as close to the raw polished aluminum as possible, but the anodized surface must be sufficiently thick to protect the aluminum, and the anodizing material is not perfectly clear, so I would guess that the anodized frames will not look exactly the same as the raw aluminum.

If you are not going to expose your kit to the elements, I can probably have Tiburon make an unanodized kit.  If you, or anyone else wants their kit to be raw polished aluminum (unanodized), please let me know ASAP.

Thanks again,

Randy

The frames look out of this world Randy. My side plates are ready to install. I have the rod blank and the guides are coming from italy. The rest is in the mail on its way here. If im going to do this build I might as well go all out.

Mike, all of the graphics are on the bottom of the frame.  The frame is totally clean when you look at the reel right-side-up.  The graphics on the bottom of the frame include:

1.  "PENN SENATOR 20/0" in large engraved letters near the front edge of the bottom of the frame, as you can see in the photo
2.  "BY TIBURON FOR VINTAGE OFFSHORE" in small engraved letters (approx. half the size of the Penn Senator letters) near the rear edge.
3.  The serial number, i.e. "1 of 20", "2 of 20", etc. laser etched to the right of the base.
4.  This is an option.  For $20, Tiburon will laser etch your name, or whatever you want of twenty characters or less, to the left of the base.

If anyone wants the option shown as #4 above, please send me exactly what you would like it to say.

Thank you,

Randy

Mike, if you go back to my first post in December of last year the original plan was for 20 units.  When Tiburon went to buy the material they were told that they had to buy it in a length that was long enough to make 17 units, so we either had to make 17 or 34.  They were subsequently able to talk their supplier into giving them a partial length of material to make three more units, so we are back to our original 20 units.

Wow, that reel will be big enough to tether in "Fat Albert". That is our TARS blimp at Cudjoe Key (FL) that has supposedly done everything from broadcasting Radio Marti to Cuba, tracking Air Force missions from Eglin AFB, and watching out for drug runners in the Caribbean.

I am gonna just fill mine with a good 200 lb. Dacron and splice in a 200 lb Momoi mono top shot. It's a lot cheaper than good hollow braid and there will be more than enough capacity for even the biggest Tuna ! Then for chunking a good crimped on Fluorocarbon leader.    John Taylor

I am pricing out a 1000 ft of 200lbs of JB hollow braid from Lee. I will top it off with 150lbs of mono.

Mike
If you put 1000 ft of JB hollow braid on it first then top it with 150 mono you better get one big spool of mono !!!  And say good by to the JB hollow cause you will probably never see it again !!  Lol !!!

I bet it will seriously hold a mile of 130, or close...a 16/0 will hold 11-1200 yds.

Chris, I think you will need 12k yd spool of Cajun :)

I didn't get one because I would have no practical use for it by I agree with some of the members with backing it with good old fashioned Dacron. Easy to splice heavy mono into it, less costly than spectra and will fill the spool easier.. JMO

I'm thinking this spool is going to have a large arbor.
It should be about the size of a 18/0 Everol spool.
The specs on that spool show it holds 1500 Yards of 200lb mono. Not True.
It holds more like 900. That is 1.5mm Diameter.
If you spool it with 130. The capacity is going to be the same as stock due to the large arbor of the spool.
With the full frame and beefed up spool, it is going to be a much stronger reel.

Daron, Everol's specs may be based on the Italian "Asso" mono fishing line which is marketed in the US as "Soft Steel". It has a lower diameter for it's listed breaking strength but probably not quite as much of a difference as you are stating.
Someone should be the "Guinea pig" and go first spooling the reel and then the others will have a better guesstimate on how they will spool theirs.

thanks for the info :D 20/0 Everol specs was 1000yds of 300lb,,,,this is a game changer,,,,,but for the good "stronger"  ;D

The 20/0 Everol is a Bigger reel. The Side Plate Diameter is much Larger.
Imagine a Gallon of Paint with a Handle on it. ;)
18/0 is the same width.
