Title: Machining line rollers
Post by: JasonGotaProblem on October 07, 2022, 01:43:52 PM
It seems to me that one of the primary parts that sends a beloved but not necessarily vintage spinner to the shelf is the line roller getting ruined and the replacement is long extinct.

I feel like compared to some of the more commonly made parts for conventionals, a line roller would be easy-ish to make. though i imagine the limiting factor is one could make a gear sleeve for a penn 500 and the same piece can work in 6 different reels spanning 60 years of production, increasing demand for that item. But a line roller for a stradic might also fit a spheros but the 3000 size is different from the 5000 size.

Sure it would be an easy part to make . First one would cost about 300 or more  dollars then the rest could be made for a quarter or less.
So with all the different Od's and Id's factor that in for each one .
Part obsolescence is an INTENTIONAL MANUFACTURING PRACTICE TODAY. Often within weeks of the first run . SAD but TRUE.

I'm well versed in planned obsolescence. I'm trying to beat the system. Agreed though on all points. So one would need to figure out which line rollers were most in demand.

I know very little about machining as demonstrated by my posts, but would it.be possible to cad up say 10 sizes of line roller in a stack to be made on a lathe? I suspect this would require stacking them in order of internal dia smallest being the deepest. Then you just cut them apart? Maybe overly optimistic. Or is it?

IMO, carbide or ceramic is the only way to go so you best have some darn good tools to make them. I think making a line roller out of SS is nothing more than a waste of time.

Dang it you're absolutely right. Didn't think about that.

Start looking at this and similar, you may be able to make something fit by playing with shims and bearing sizes.  I got an old FH Stradic back in service with this one.

I have purchased quite a few items from ROC with good value and results!   Currently there seems to be a problem with certain items, like small squid hooks.

if those are tested/approved by AT members, GET THEM -- that's a great price!!!
it's SOOOOOOO NICE to NEVER worry about a scratched/scuffed roller
all my in-use Shimano's are converted to mid-90's genuine Shimano solid SIC rollers,
and I wouldn't part w/ my spares for <$10 (used)
mine don't even have the more modern "twist-reducing" groove/channel
don't need/want/believe that feature (need new topic for that rant ::) )

It's not the end of a reels life if the line roller is stuck. Early reels didn't have rolling line rollers. Most of the time customers didn't even know theirs wasn't working.

I've had problems with one part on my Stratic FJ line rollers. Didn't notice that part in Reelclean's reference. Always got badly corroded though; some kinda prolly pot-metal part that couldn't handle saltwater at all.
