Title: To Have and Have Not.....
Post by: cdaline on July 15, 2021, 04:48:10 AM
Late night movie watchin' last night....Hemingway's
To Have and Have Not.... with Bogie and Bacall. Bogart
is a Charter boat fishing Captain. One good reel is lost
overboard by a knucklehead. A couple of good scenes
with Bogart working on his tackle in his apartment. A
favorite movie of mine knowing that Bogart was really
into sailing/fishing/boating. I looked around the net and
found some photos you might enjoy. One feller on the
net thought he had purchased one of Bogies fishing
chairs but lacked provenance. Bogart was a friend of
Hemingway. 8)
BTW: he made the guy reimburse him for the lost
reel.... ;)

Love this.

There's a few different outfits there.  What are they?

I can heartily recommend a book entitled "Papa Hemingway in Key West" by James McLendon.  Not a ton of fishing references or detail (this is more biographical) but the interesting part is that the characters in Hemingway's literature were usually either real people (renamed) or more often "mashups" of the characteristics of multiple folks (including himself).  Many if not most of the characters in "To Have and Have Not" were from Hemingway's Key West days, and in the book above there is a chapter that gives a pretty good breakdown of "who was who".  - john

Have to differ to the experts on I.D.

Big fan of Hemingway's fishing exploits.
He captures the thrill as well as any
writer ever. Thanks for the rec.

I want Bogies cap ! .... Couldn't help but
notice how fine Bacall looked in the
movie.

He probably could afford the best tackle
of the era so must be high end.

Fun! I'll have to look that one up. Thanks.

The reel work on the couch photo is fun, and familiar. Although I'm a lot less nonchalant about it!

Thanks for this recommendation, Chas —

I just put the movie on my watch list.  I can rent it through our Paramount Account on our ROKU for $2.70.

Should be a hoot on our big screen.

Looking forward to watching it with my wife.

Best, Fred

I hope you like it Fred.

I added a photo of a crusty Pflueger found in
Hemingway's home in Key West. Looks to be
in need of some appreciation.  ;)

.... And, if you have the time,
a really well written historical
Hemingway fishing perspective.

Yes - the book is set in Key West, but in the film the setting was moved to Martinique for some reasons. One of my favorite films (also starring Bogart and Bacall) is Key Largo - alsp worth a watch from time to time.
