Title: Are My Reels Up to the Task?
Post by: Djamiller on November 25, 2013, 12:38:16 PM
I was looking to do some night time Swordfishing here in Florida soon and I was wondering if my reels are up to the task. Between me and my buddy we have a bunch of Senator 4/0s, 2 Senator 9/0s, I shimano Tyrnos 30, and a Penn International 30 vsw 2 speed. I was thinking about leaving the 4/0s at home and spooling the international and Tyrnos with 80lb braid and the 9/0 with 70-80lb mono. Any thoughts?

For night timing, where 90% of the fish are under 100lbs you can get by, not ideally but it can be done. I would use 50lb or 60lb at the most mono on the 9/0s for capacity and use them as jug (float, balloon etc.) rods and use the 30W with braid backing as the tip rod. The tyrnos can also be used as a jug rod. I think for starting out, three rods in the water ( International, Tyrnos and one 9/0) at one time will be easier to manage with your drift. 75', 150' for the jugs and 300' depth for the tip. Keep the spare 9/0 ready if a fish comes up into the lights.  Good luck.
