Title: Penn Spinfisher V 4500
Post by: Shark Hunter on September 30, 2018, 08:06:45 PM
Mike brought me one of these this afternoon.
The rotor spins freely, but you can hardly crank it.
A quick teardown reveals a Main and pinion engagement issue.
The pinion looks a little chewed up, but the main gear looks fine?
Is this a normal problem with these reels?

Daron i take care of a pile of these reels for the inshore charter guides. Most of them get stiff to reel and after new bearings it still will do it. The gear set for these reels is very cheap. Replace the gears and it will be like new.

Yeah, just likely a gear set, along with a complete service — at that point, I generally replace bearings also, as long as it is broken open — no further issues that way.

Just like Keith sez...

Best,

Fred

Or replace the reel with a different model Penn :-\...just my 2 cents!

Yeah, I believe $60 shipped. On the other hand, you could buy the original set for $12, I didn't think they would be that cheap.
Might be worth it fixing it the second time and not push the reel too hard.

Originally, Mike told me a 4500ss.
I wasn't expecting a V.
Everything looks perfect except for the gears.
Mike is a good friend, and this reel is his girl's Julia.
I will turn it around, and have it back to her by the weekend.
I had many chores to do this weekend.
In my old age, They will get done as I see fit. ;)
Thanks for the input fella's.

Everything in the reel looked new.
I could tell by the shiny teeth on the pinion, the gears were the issue.
Finally replaced them and it feels like new again.
A $15 fix.
