here is the list of guys that are on the trip. to get your name on this list, you have to send me a check for $825, which is half of the total estimated $1650 cost of the trip. it will be placed in a separate checking account that i just set up this afternoon. the money stays there until april 1st, 2014, when the trip is either "go" or "no go."

Hello Alan,
I originally stated I would like to go on this trip but I can not. Received news a few days ago we are expecting a new grandchild the week of the trip. I hope to be able to meet the group at the dock either before you leave or upon your return.

Eager to be onboard!
Of my three Daiwa 600H's that have Bryan's 5+1 mod, only two are spooled up. Now I have no reason to procrastinate any more...gotta go chase down a deal on 100lb braid...and some other goodies ;D
small two speed lever drags are the way to go. we will take inventory of what we have soon.

How small is small, around the Avet MX size?
yup!
Mine just got back from getting the old 2 screw base replaced with the new 6 screw one and it's in the reel pile for the trip.
welcome to kevin smith and his father, also kevin smith!
hi alan
can you put me on standby pls.
we've got plenty of time!
my brother, ed, will be joining us!
mel is on board. we have just gone international!
Just over 1/3 of the way to a full boat.
welcome, rob!
What are the dates of the trip?- Nevermind! Just looked at the other threads and saw.
this is getting serious. if this trip doesn't come together, my wife is going to make me come along on her trip to cancun with the girls. it's the same week. guys, don't let me down.

8) I can get you into a 'safe house' in San Diego. 8)
I know no one one this board knows me but I am an avid reader of it and have made several major purchases due to the info on this board. I wish I could go but we have a major family trip that overlaps. I will do my very best to attend the next 'session' I promise!
it would be great to have you along next year!
i would also like to welcome warren hamachi! it turns out that i've known his brother for the last 25 years. we just spoke and had a great conversation. warren is a veteran of many trips, so we can look to him for help!
With that last name he's got to be good!

I can't tell you how cool it is that someone caught that. I've been using Hamachi for a long long time.
Ron
It's good to see this list growing! I wish I could go...Guess I'll have to wait till next year.
johnny, you can still cancel out on your other trip!!!! ;D
welcome, mark thomann!
Half way there!!!!!
and we have two more on the way. my mom recruited two guys from church!!!!
I'll be on the list next month, save me a spot!!
Ron
presumably around the same time next year, if this year works out.
welcome to randy isogawa (second from the left), and ken should be sending a check soon. he and ken taniguchi are from fresno, my home town!
welcome, ken! ten more to go!
Alan...Getting a refund my my already paid trip...We are haggling over the $300.00 non-refundable deposit, but with the tip and visas included in the $1650.00 price I wont lose much even if they wont budge...So soon you can add another Fresno guy to the list...As soon as I get my $$$ back I will send you a check for the full amount!!! Remember I'm a total newbie to this type of fishing with the exception of a few Albacore & what ever I caught with my Grandpa when I went to High School in San Diego many years ago...I just remember we would dive for abalone around La jolla and fish kelp paddies...Been way to long
i hope they will refund the deposit. it makes for good business to do that. so, at this point, wait for your check from the intrepid, then send me a check for $825, not the full $1650. make sure you read through everything at the beginning of this post so that we are all on the same page. this fresno connection is pretty funny. did my mom call you and twist your arm? for such a little lady, she can be very persuasive! ;D
Got it...Do you have to have a full 24 passengers for this to be a go?
yes, we do. we should be able to make that goal. i don't want you to take a loss on this, but there is some risk.
Alan, in 51 years I've learned everything is a risk, even walking out the front door...I am confident I have hooked up with the right people...Thank you for your kindness...If a little old lady comes by me to twist my arm and says this is from Alan, I will just fall to the ground and tell her I already paid!
OK,
So, I'll be honest, I'm packing my sea bag. Mostly because I have lived with a packed sea bag for the last 17 years and this time it won't be for a submarine (WOO HOO!) Alan, I know you've been on this particular boat. I'm packing very light because all I plan on doing is fishing until I fall to sleep, but I would like to know.
1. Is their a rain locker
2. Does everyone get their own rack
3. Is their hang up lockers for rain gear and such.
4. Is their hotel power (120V service) available or is everything 12 V
5. Anything weird about this particular boat we should know about so we can plan for?
Thanks
Ron
Submarines! Can't say I enjoyed my ride that much, but when you serve in Groton Conn. and are a machinist you most likely will ride one or 2 for sea trials
by rain locker, if you mean showers, yes, there are three. no separate places to hang wet clothes, but i doubt that we will have rain. if you run out of clothes and need to wash and then dry something, the guys will likely just hang your clothes over the diesel engines until the dry. i'm sure ron's done that a few times. crew only allowed in the engine rooms. the "staterooms" are more like closets with top and bottom racks, the bow cabin has four racks, no hot bunking on this boat. i'm still mobile enough that top racks are still fine, anyone that needs a bottom bunk should let me know. power is 120 volts. other than that, that's it.
well, um, don't tell anyone, but there is a double bait tank up on the bow. ;D
Bow bait tanks are the coolest thing EVER!! YOu are always alone and have your own source of bait. THis is getting better by the second.

welcome to joel morenfeld and ernie kazato. ok, two more guys is all we need. for the guys that are already signed up, send in the other half if you have not yet. i'll be back in a week!
YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... now time to think what else is necessary for this trip... ::) ???
I have never done this kind of fishing before. That being said I have 4 rod and reel combos. 7' Rainshadow (40-80) with HX 5/2, 6'6" Seeker Black Steel #40 with an HX 5/2, Seeker Black Steel 6'6" #30 with Lx 4.6 & 7' Black Steel with JX 6.0... Will this work for this trip?
Bring one lighter rig for calico bass but the rest will work.
I use my 7' #30 for rock cod, will that work for calico's as well or even lighter than that?
Quote from: Big Tim on March 17, 2014, 10:40:54 PM

Someone more knowledgeable about calicos can answer better than me, I need to figure out what I'll bring for them too.
I'm bringing a HXJ Raptor, a MX 2 speed a JX 2 speed and a pile of Penn reels on rods from 25 to 80.
Thanks Keta! I do have a lighter set up buried in the garage somewhere. Guess it's time to clean the garage.
I have fished for calicos for the last 35 years or more. I've caught a bunch and the overwhelming majority have been with a Mitchel 300 on a Fenwick 12 pound bass rod. It is essentially high vegetation large mouth bass fishing. I am bringing a Newelled Baymaster for live bait and a Sealine X20SHV for artificials. Both will have 20# mono on top of solid braid with a long floro leader if they are line shy.
Ron
i'm thinking of using my SX MXJ and BX-500N, all filled with straight mono, as light duty gear. is this good or too much?
Probably can't go wrong with a 12-20 pound rig for calicos. Mono should be fine with a 12 pound fluoro leader.

Would a spinner have any advantages over a real reel?

no, no, no. no hot racking allowed! ;D we will work this out somehow. in the meantime, rules are rules. and we still need checks from everyone.
THE MORE THE MERRIER :) :) :)
Quoteno, no, no. no hot racking allowed! ;D
Ummm, how can I say this?
Eewwwww! :D :D
Big Tim and I are Navy Chiefs, Hot Racking is just something that happens. Like, right now their are probably 50 or so 2nd class Petty Officers and below on fast attack submarines that are sleeping where some other guy slept a few hours ago. Somehow I dodged the bullet, but I've tried for the last 10 years or so to limit the number of kids doing it on my boats, just not fun.
I hope no one is sore about the way I got on the list, I'm thrilled to see my name there and I can't wait to fish with you all. Alan, if their is a less than ideal extra bunk and the Coast Guard will let them take all of us I'll rack wherever. I'm coming to fish not enjoy a cruise liner.
Thanks
Ron
5 days to April 1...c'mon guys send in the other half if you haven't yet. ;D ;D ;D

ok, the list is updated. EVERYONE IS PAID IN FULL!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D all checks will be deposited this afternoon and we are on hold until april first when i send in payment in full to annemarie. be aware, that until april 1st, anyone can withdraw and still get a full refund. on april first, a check will be sent to the spirit of adventure and we are committed. after april 1st, those of you that need to book flights may do so.
we also have one person on standby. if there are no objections, i would like to add that last person to our trip on our day of departure. if there are objections (since this was not the original plan), please let me know. holding david back until our departure date will allow any of the original 24 to withdraw and still get a full refund. if we lose two, then the first to call me (408-219-1149) and leave a message, or send a text, will get a full refund. the second person and anyone after will not get a refund unless a check is received from a replacement.
there is something that is considered common knowledge but should be repeated. you must bring a passport. no one as ever asked to see mine, but you have to have one.
definitely no objections on my side. what about Bryan? is 26 too much of a load?
One of the passport cards works too. You can enter by land or sea with them but have a standard passport to fly.
Mark: You just answered the question I was getting ready to ask...I have the card and was pretty sure I was ok with that.

bryan will likely not be able to make it. we are still in negotiations.
bernard chen will be joining the standby list.
From Burlingame, CA - originally from Los Angeles, and from Singapore for the last couple of years. Would be great to fish with everyone if there's space.
bernard,
we will make space for the stand-bys, but we will definitely need/want a bigger boat for next year or at least 2 trips... ;D ;D ;D

Apparently so. I mean, if several guys who'd like to go cannot because of space constraints, that's reason enough... not to mention crowded rails. :)

Alan T., how many can sleep in the galley(SOA)?

And Alan T. it is deeply appreciated... :)
Guys: It takes a long time and a sharp learning curve to get to the point that Alan has reached. Look at all the sites where guys lament the competition on the boat to the point that some long range trips are labeled "combat fishing." Go back and read the post on everything you need to know about the trip that Alan composed. I searched back a couple of years where Alan posted a "what worked and what didn't work" list on one of his long range trips. I could not find it but if someone here can find it post the link. Alan is giving you the benefit of his experience. If I were going on this trip I would show up with 3 rods and reels, some hooks and some irons and relax and let the trip play out. Good luck and tight lines guys. I am going to try to get to San Diego to meet the boat. It should be great fun to meet you guys. Dominick

i was going to say it was a different time. i'm going by your suggestion 2 30s 2 40s 2 50s and some. now i just have to master the technique if there's one... ;D ;D ;D
Learning from a bunch of calm, technical fisherman (and women) is a big draw. Catching big fish is hard!
I went out of Capitola on one of the small rental boats with my wife and kids last summer. I'd been out there before, scouting locations. That time, I checked the tide & waves, air temp, set up the rods and reels, hooked the bait, and handed off to the kids (5 and 3 at the time). Of course they caught fish and my wife says, "What's so hard about fishing?"
Where to begin? And that was easy fishing!
Dominick, maybe let's make the trek together if I can get away.
