Cannot wait!
Looks good Bryan! I'm in for at least one set. ;D
:o
Bryan,
Have you determined how much drag one can safely (without destroying gears etc) get from this system yet?
Thanx,
Leo
Leo,
I don't think you'll use the 113h in a situation over 25lbs. of constant drag, which this reel with all upgrades can definitely handle.
If you were gonna need more use the 114h/115 with the upgrades then you're good for 35lbs+ safely.
Hope that helped but the actual numbers would depend on the amount of upgrades added.
Dom
Dom,
Im reminded of past occasions when fishing "home guard" yellow tails in the 40#+ range at San Clemente and Catalina islands (so cal waters) when one would need to button-down the drags to stop the fish from "instantly" rocking you and cutting off your line. Thankfully Ive got all the upgrades for my 113h's (except this one) and my concern now is poping/breaking my line from my old habit of button-down on my star drag. I guess I will have to re-train myself and use caution in the future. I dont plan to use max drag with this drag configuration (only in my 113h standard not yts) but I do look forward to the smoothness that this should provide plus knowing that my drags are not maxed-out for the sake of reliability.
Leo
Well, I figure if you buttoned it down when ya had 15lbs of drag, there should be no need to button her down with 25. Gotta love having all that drag behind ya ;) it's like a race car driver with all them horses underneath 'em.
Dom
Count me in for my many Pro Gear reels. Thanks Bryan..!!
Hi Everyone.
The drag kits cost $35 shipped in the USA if pay check, PM me before sending me your money to make sure kits are available.
If you would rather pay via paypal, the price is $37/set to cover the paypal fees.
International orders, only paypal is acceptable for payment, and shipping price will be added to paypal invoice.
I currently have 12 kits available. Unfortunately, the inserts were mis-printed (my error), and needs to be re-printed.
PM me if you are interested.
Thank you,
Bryan
Sent you a PM earlier today.
Leo
Please let me know how your new drag kits perform in real fishing applications. I'm getting tired running across the park to test the kits out. At least I'm getting exercise lol.
Got them in the mail today!! They look nice. Right now the temp outside is around -5 so unless I go ice fishing those drags won't be tested until next summer. I can dream though :)
I added a photo of the Drag kit to the first post so you can see what you are buying.
Thank you.
Hello,
I believe that 2 drag kits were sent yout with only 6 Carbontex washers instead of 8. If you are one of the two, please let me know and I'll send those out to you immediately.
Sorry for the shortage.

hi Leo. They are available. Pm me with your needs. Thank you Bryan
Great product, I highly recommend it, made a world of difference to my good 'ol 4/0!
Thank you Bryan!
Bryan Don't Play. ;) He makes a lot of fishermen Happy Here! ;D
Thank you. I the best in people...and reels too. Every reel has potential...I just help the reels to discover their inner self. Lol :D
Leo, they're definitely worth giving a try...Go big or go home!
Daron, you make me look like a rehabbed reel head...and I'm not ;)
Bryan, "the reel whisperer" is feeding our addiction. He has a talk with each part he sends out so they perform at the top of their game for us. ;D
Enjoy a great upgrade,
Dom
Bryan, I hope your feeling better. Do you have anymore of these drag sets?

Hi Peter,
I still do, and I was feeling better until I tried to rush my recovery...and my stomach is upset again.
PM me with your address and email address and I'll send you a paypal invoice. I hope to be able to get the drag kits out by Saturday.
Bryan
Been wanting a 113 for a while, so this may sound like a dumb question, will the 7 +1 work in all 113's or just a 113H?
No, but I can create a 7 stack for the 113. I just haven't had the time to do so. I have a 5 stack for reels that have the 5-60 gears though. Let me know what you need and let me do some fitment this weekend.
Bryan
Brian
Hope your feeling better, when you feel up to it please send me an invoice for a 5/60 5 stack kit.
I do not know why but I'm trying to hot rod a primo 1/0 that I had for a few years.
Joel8080.
3 kits remaining.
All parts have been ordered. Unfortunately, I do not have an ETA for the metal washers. I will keep you posted.
What ss gear sets do you recommend Brian?

Pro Challanger gears are good and smooth. I also like Newell and Accurate gears, but are not available any longer.
OK Bry,
I'll take one of those 7 stack kits for my tank. I'll send a check back.
Bryan
Hope your felling better. Please email me an invoice for 2
7 stock's for my 113h and my Progear, 440.
Thank you
Joel8080.
Bryan
Please add a mini system for a 114h.
Joel8080.
One kit remaining. Sorry Joel. Just sold 2 kits this morning.
Would one 113H kit and 114H kit be acceptable for now and you could order another kit when my parts comes in?
0 kits remain...sorry.
I'm trying to get the parts as soon as I can.
Two local stores in Hawaii pick up my remaining stock before my newly order parts came in.
If you are in Hawaii, contact Bill at Ewa Beach Buy and Sell in Ewa Beach Hawaii or Brian at Brian's Fishing Supply in Honolulu, Hawaii.
I will take the 2.
Joel.
Ok, I guess I missed the Boat on this one. :'(
For now. Parts are on order...but I'm a little guy in the buying scheme so I have to wait until they can fit me in.
I feel your pain. ;D Just make sure you give them a good talking to before you send them to me. ;)
Hey Bryan.
Do you have any updates on if/when more sets will be available?
Thanks, Scott.
Hi
Any news on availability for this stack? Also for the stack for the Newell 5:1 gears for the jigmaster?
Thanks

Jigmaster set is available. 113h is 3rd priority after Daiwa 600h and 400h series.
Bryan,
I have an older 113H that says Penn Senator 4/0 Special in the right side plate. The drags are externally accessible by removing the handle assembly. Will this drag stack work with this reel and if so, please put me on your customer list for a set. I really liked your Newell 533 stack.
Thanks.
Robert
Drag kits are back in stock.
Robert, I had sent you a paypal invoice. Thank you.
Thanks Bryan! Payment sent through Paypal.

Hi Bryan
I've got a 113H (the older style where the drags can be replaced without removing the main gear), and am interested in you 7+1 stack. A few questions:
1) Do you have any in stock?
2) I have Newell 4:1 gears installed, will your stack work with this reel?
3) Does your stack require special carbon fiber drags?
Thanks
Jeff
Hi Jeff,
Yes, the drag kit will work with your reel with stock and aftermarket gear sets, such as Newell, Accurate, and Black Pearl.
The drag kit comes with Carbontex washers which replacements can be purchased from SmoothDrag if needed. They consists of 2 #40 at 1 mm thick and 5 #40 at 0.67 mm thick. I do sell metal washers at $3 each although separate washers are not in stock at the moment because they are all kitted up.
Thank you,
Bryan
Thanks Bryan! How can go about order a kit?
Hi Jeff,
I just sent you a paypal invoice.
Thank you,
Bryan
Bryan - I just installed the 7+1 kit in my 113H. With my star buttoned down, I am getting 12# of drag, straight pull off the reel (spool is 2/3 full). On a rod, I am getting 18.5# of drag. I have the +1 under the main gear, i have the carbontex ligthly greased with Cals. The stack is thick carbontex, keyed washer, thick carbontex, eared washer, carbontex, keyed washer, carbontex, eared washer, carbontex, keyed washer, carbontex, eared washer, carbontex, keyed washer, then tension spring drag (18-970), cupped down. I also have a tension spring (8-349) on top of the spacing sleeve, cupped up. Do I need a longer spacing sleeve? Any ideas?
Chris
That definitely doesn't sound right. When you button down the drag, is the star hitting the sideplate? If not, then quite possible, the last eared washer is above the main gear or line slipping on the spool would be my first two places I'd look.
I Think Bryan is right. Your stack isn't tall enough. Put another eared washer on top of your last keyed, then put the tension spring on top of that. Then your spacer and star.
I took it apart and I see the problem. The ear washer channel/grove in my gear stops just above the 2 thick carbons and keyed washer. The first eared washer is not resting on the carbon washer, just slightly above it. When I cranked down the drag, this ear washer bent at the ears as I increased the pressure. So I did a little dremmel work and swapped out the first thin keyed washer for a regular keyed washer. I bent the ears back in shape on the eared washer (and moved it to the top of the stack) and reassembled. Now I am getting 20# of drag straight pull, without being buttoned down. Very nice. Thank you Bryan and Shark Hunter.
I'm glad you got it worked out.
What upgrades are recommended for this drag stack

What upgrades are recommended for this drag stack
Depending on what drag pressure you will be fishing,
If you are fishing more than 15#, I would recommend a stainless steel gear sleeve.
If you are fishing more than 20# of drag, I would recommend steel or stainless steel gears.
and a larger handle and stainless steel arm are always good upgrades.
If you want to do this all at once, I have the drag kits, Alan's Stainless Steel Gear Sleeves, Black Pearl Stainless Steel Gears, and Alan's SS arms and 3/0 and 5/0 handles.
How much for the drag kit the black pearl gears and the ss pinion sleeve?

How much for the drag kit the black pearl gears and the ss pinion sleeve?
Ultimate Upgrade 7+1 drag kit - $37
Black Pearl 4:1 SS Gears - $55 (http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=6259.0)
SS Gear Sleeve - $25 (http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=13041.0)
If you guy a SS gear sleeve, you really need a SS anti-reverse dog. This is $4.
If you want the SS anti-reverse dog and undergear washer kit it's $7.
The recommend parts total is $124 plus shipping and 3% paypal fees.
Sweet I'll tell my buddy tonight at work I'm building him a snapper reel. I'll also be ordering some of your 115l parts. I'll pm you later with everything so you can send me a PayPal invoice. Thanks bryan.
brandon
Brandon,
I just put in an order from Black pearl yesterday and he doesn't have any of the 113H gears in stock right now. He said Dawn at Smooth drag has some.
Thanks for the heads up daron
Hi Brandon,
Let me know.
I have drag kits in stock, 2 or three 113h pro challenger gears and about a 5 gear sleeves in my stock.
I'll be in San Diego until Saturday, so I hope you are not in a rush.
Thanks,
Bryan
Out of stock.
Anticipated restock by early May, 2015
Kits are not available. Unfortunately, the prices of the washers has increased, and therefore the has been increased to $38 from $37. Sorry.
I tried locate messages of individuals that have requested kits, but I cannot seem to find them. Please send me another message.
Individual washers are still $3 each plus shipping.
Thank you.
Bryan
I hope somebody us monitoring this thread..........does this drag stack also fit the PG Pacifica 3000? Most folks say its straight Penn 113 inside the PG. Is this so?

If the main gear is the same size as a 113H, then yes it will fit.
let's see....It is made for this reel and if yours is like this then it will. Well yeaaaaaah. It wasn't a rhetorical question. Does anybody know if this drag system will fit in a Pro Gear Pacifica 3000"
It should, the 3500/3000 have 4/0 gears/drags.
Thank you sir!
If I were to send you the reel to do the following upgrades, how much would it cost?

Hi Bryan... a question.
Are the metal and carbontex for under the gear on the gen 2 sleeves the same as the thin washers in the stack?
thanks...
The metal washer is but the Carbontex is 0.5 mm thick versus 0.76 mm and 1 mm thick that is in the drag stack.
thought so! but these old eyes are often fooled! thanks Bryan...
Hi Bryan Young! I am new to this website and I have a Penn 113H with both Accurate frame and sideplates and I would like to upgrade the reel with stainless steel gears, drag kit (I believe you make them), double dog, SS yoke, and have the reel serviced by you. I was wondering if you would like to trade two 4/0 Accurate narrow frame for the upgrade on my 113H? The two 4/0 Accurate narrow frames that I have are in red and gold. Sorry I do not have narrow spools for them. Thank you for your consideration!
Bad news, my laser cutter had raised prices after 3 years. The drag kits are now $39 shipped.
All kits are sold out.
Not sure if I'll be making any more kits due to lack of interest and cost in comparison to other drag mods out there. If you guys are still interested in me carrying these kits, please let me know.
Glad I got mine just in time ;D
I'll commit to 10 sets Bryan. Just send the invoice..... ;D
You have a good thing going here, why would you even consider stopping? I happen to like your sets, they really work. It's nice to have different options.
Sal
These kits offer more bang for the buck than any 4/0 mod I can think of...I'd hate to see them not offered.
I thought these were selling well in Hawaii for you?
I can understand not wanting to deal with all the extra headaches and upfront financial costs.
But make no mistake about it.. these are great upgrades.
Bryan.... put me down for 3 sets... bill me... steve
I'll have additional parts cut. Thank you for the interest.
What tools do I need to do these upgrades on my Penn 113h2lh 4/0?

A handle but wrench ( one should have been included with your reel) and a screw driver ( should be a parts of the same tool).
I can grease the drag washers for you if you don't have drag grease.
That might be a good idea I will let you know when I order one. Do you use penn reel grease ?

Hi Bryan - I sent you a PM. Looking to purchase one set. Are they still available? Thanks!
I'm currently sold out. I'm waiting for parts. They have been back ordered. ETA mid May.
Bryan I think I have plenty of the metal sets. I will check tomorrow and see.
Keith
Bryan - Please save me a set and also one of your 5+1 set for a penn 140. :) Thank you!
I don't have the carbontex washers in 0.030" thick. Smoothdrag is cutting more washers for my kits.
The good news, SmoothDrag has my washers restocked and I will be able to put the kits together shortly. Thank you everyone for your patience.
On a separate note, I haven't been on here very much. I got into a little car accident and they totaled my car. I have been crazily looking for a replacement and hope I will find my replacement car this weekend. Wish me luck. Every car I'm interested in gets snagged even before I can see it. Luck luck luck.
Things will get normal shortly, I so hope.
Thank you,
Bryan
awesome news.
Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope you find a good deal on a car.
I have five 541's and two 441's that I'd like to get drag kits for. Also is there any other upgrades to these reels that you can recommend? Thank you!
Darin, if you really want to find all the upgrades for those reels, read thru the ProGear section. Lots of info to be found. Anything that can be done to a 113h can be done to the PG's you mention.
Stainless gear sets, gear sleeves, drag upgrades, etc. I love these reels.
I can't believe it's been 5 years since these came out. Man time does fly by.
Can I still get this kit for 541?
