Hi folks , wondering if anyone can help me .
I picked up this reel free , a guy was going to chuck it out . Anyway turns out all it needs is a bit of love and a couple of bearings .
I've hit a bit of a snag though and no amount of research has turned up a solution .
In order to remove the rear drag it seems i need t remove this clip (hopefully the pics have attatched ) but the bugger wont budge and I cant grip it with anything .
Just hoping that there is a secret ?

I take something with a sharp edge to get the retainer started up. Using it in the center. Then you can catch the sides of the retainer.

Ended up using handi2's method with the sharp pointy thing .
Typical , everything about that walk thru is the same except the retainer clip in the reel I have here does not have a notch for a screwdriver , only difference I can see . Anyway , job done now , thanks for the pointers .
There is no notch..
I think I got a particularly stubborn one of these once.
After much frustration, I finally used a Dremmel to create a notch in it.
That did the trick.

There is, it just doesn't jump out at you. At least there is for the part we have in stock, I even double checked them.
Toward the top of the retainer you can see the notch in the photo:

The first gen has seen design changes , just like the crosswind gear.
Here a photo of the notch and one without.
If stuck or corroded it bends, that may be why the notch changed.
A Ultra Sonic cleaner helps with easier removal when corroded.

Ah, see, thought that was the answer.
The notch makes more sense.
I've rebuilt the rear drag on these before. You need to get something like an awl pry it out. Once that piece is out you can remove the rest of the parts.
Just a heads up, the 4500 LL that I did had an extra piece that wasn't in the schematic. It was driving me crazy and then I discovered the missing piece was under a paper towel.

Gotta say i much preffer the LL mechanism to the shimano version , mch easier to service.
On another note arent ultrasonic cleaners the best thing since sliced bread . Only problem (well here in western Australia anyway) is finding a reasonably priced one that doesnt fall apart after 5 minutes .
On the one I had, there was an extra washer in the rear drag that wasn't listed on the schematic. I'm 100% sure it was a 4500 LL.

The liveliner mechanism very weak and breaks easily all for the sake of a short screw.
The mechanism in the SSV models is considerably more robust but you will not find anything more reliable than the original Shimano mechanism.

Oh yeh for sure, totally agree , was really just talking from an ease of service point . You can take the side off these things without having to worry about 20 small parts going into orbit ;D
swoffer check your Dentist. That's how I got my first ultrasonic cleaner and it was free.
