Aloha All! I was hooked up to the local 14 foot Tiger Shark and was doing great for all of 45 minutes, but halfway through the fight my drag just gave out. Every time I would tighten the star and try to reel the drag would go to practically nothing. If drag is pulled from the reel I can visually watch the star come loose until its at zero drag. I took my reel apart and nothing seems to be bent or busted, but it is still slipping. Please help me!!!
Maybe the drag washers have flattened and the star is bottoming out on the side plate. Pulling drag with the star rubbing on the side plate can loosen it. New drag washers or thicker washers might fix it.
I wish we had a local 14 foot tiger. The turtles are multiplying and taking over everything.

Would you recommend replacing the HT100 washers or adding an extra one to compensate for the space?
Try adding another metal keyed washer on top of the stack. Rudy
Do you have the wavy spring washer between the star and drag sleeve?
Yeah I have the spring washer.

So I added one and it definitely increased the drag, but the star kept spinning still.
9:50 in the 808, it's still early here with the holiday tomorrow.
Was the Shark from a boat or shore?
This one is a good mystery.
(Thanks for fixing that Dominick!, I'm certain I did it, new iPad keyboard)

It was like that when you posted so I am not too sure, but heres a link to a video I made of what's happening: https://vimeo.com/477925325
Update: when the drag is engaged and I try to reel it comes loose as well. And this was shark fishing from shore btw.
I see a large gap between the handle blade and the star. Are you sure you have everything assembled correctly and nothing missing

is there a spacing sleeve between star and top drag washer (wavy)?
It's all guesswork until we can see the actual drag configuration
Ted
My money is on the wavey spring washer between the hand and star isn't putting enough pressure on the star to keep it from loosening

I believe that there is one

You think I should buy a new one or what should I try?
You need to take it apart before buying anything. Take pictures of each step.
When you back the star off all the way maybe there was enough sloop for the top eared washer to have popped out of the groove & is sitting on top edge of the main gear.
Rowdy, I was thinking about an eared washer issue as well. No experience with big reels so I kept my mouth shut ;D
How would I fix that issue??
Without pics we are all guessing. I am looking at the schematics and your metal drag washers should be stacked keyed first then eared ending with key on top.

I am very much a newbie, but what about you? Have you had a Senator or similar reel apart before?
Here is a schematic of your reel. https://www.mysticparts.com/Assets/images/pennparts/schematics/117l.pdf (https://www.mysticparts.com/Assets/images/pennparts/schematics/117l.pdf)
Do you have the
proper wrench to take the handle nut (23) off after removing the handle nut lock screw (23a) ? I'd start with that, then items 24, 49, 10, 8, and 156. See if you can then get the board (us) a picture(s) of what you might see down in that area. What may be the problem is hard for the untrained eye to look for. Take several pics from different angles looking down into the reel around the gear sleeve (item 98). What comes next, comes next, based on your results.
Views like this, but closer in with more detail of what you see inside the hole under the parts you removed: (https://id3480.securedata.net/kayaksportfishing/tackle_n_tips/submissions/ted/engageleverout1.JPG)
:)
We all need a thread like this these days! You can do it.

Gfish, I fixed your post. Dominick
I fixed it! I really dissected this reel down to the drag stack, turns out I was missing a tension spring. I removed the tension spring from my other 14/0 and placed it on top of the drag stack, placed the stack cover on top, and reassembled the handle. Tested it and it works 100% . Thank you all for the help!
when I fix a problem for two bucks, i buy a lotto ticket....
Tension springs are not very thick when compressed, you may need another beveled wash under it, good luck, cheers Don.
