I have a large set of Brownell's fixed-blade screwdrivers that are dedicated to my amateur gunsmithing projects and firearms maintenance.
I was never able to justify having an extra set for my reel mechanic and service work. And quite frankly, of the 24 Brownell's screwdrivers I have -- only 3 or 4 were ever used regularly.
So this set of Bald Eagle fixed blade screwdrivers was available last week from Grizzly. Used to be $25. On sale for $13.95. Closeout priced at $10.97!
I had never handled one of these drivers in person -- and doubted that they could be as good as the Brownells that cost over $300.
So I took a chance and ordered a set. Problem was, me being cheap, the shipping was $10.95 -- or free if my order was $40, or more. So I ordered (4) sets.
Surprise -- when looking at the specs -- hardened to RC58-60, magnetic, hollow ground blades, very good and comfortable grip, excellent control -- they were as good or better than Brownell's.
Plus, every time I would go to Brownell's to order these (6) needed sizes -- they were always on back-order for the last 18 months.
When they arrived -- I believe whatever firm makes the Brownell's -- also makes these with just a different brand label.
They even fit the tiny slot on a Shakespeare 2052 Microlight old maroon spinner.
I sent a set to a friend, and will keep 3 sets for myself -- inside shop, outer shop, and the RV.
Do not know how much longer they will be available -- but I highly recommend ordering a set if this type of tool is important to you.
Best,
Fred

I had a good giggle because I often say that to my wife and she then starts a whole discussion why a manufacturer would never do that, whereas I know they do and it often just makes good business sense. ;D
Looks like you got yourself a very good deal, enjoy them!
Thanks for the link Fred! - john
Thanks!
I picked up 4 too.
Thanks Fred. That is a nice set of screwdrivers.
One set in the upstairs shop, one set in the second shop, one set in the service/repair go-bag that is always on every fishing trip, and one set given away.
Since last night, (7) members have emailed to let me know that they ordered a set, or two. (3) members that I know of have ordered (4) sets.
Maybe if enough are ordered -- they won't be discontinued. But who knows? No guarantees...
Best,
Fred
Fred,
Thank you for the heads up on this set!
I have a good screwdriver already, so I can't justify buying these, but if I didn't, I'd definitely order one!
Good screwdrivers are worth their weight in gold and this is a great deal!
Thank you Fred for always giving us great reviews and taking the time to share your wisdom, thoughts, and opinions with us!
Got 4. PITB to ck. out though.

Maybe things have changed? -- since I ordered them last week, Randy --
Only took me maybe 3 minutes -- items arrived with free shipping on (4) sets within 5 days -- and there was a weekend in there.
Grizzly is a solid, top quality company -- without issues.
Their website and tracking are up there with the best -- and they appreciate your business.
I have done business with them for many years -- and never an issue.
You guys should get their free printed catalog (remember Sears Roebuck?) and also their emails -- you will not be sorry. Their catalog is fully online & easily navigated with no clunkiness.
Best,
Fred
I agree Fred!
A catalog from them is a must, it is huge, almost 750 pages.
I do enjoy shopping there as well, a good company to deal with.

Sent in my order today.
For other things to consider adding to the order to get over the free shipping minimum:
There are big discounts on ultrasonic cleaners. The 3/4 liter is only $26. Don't know if they are any good:
https://www.grizzly.com/products/Bald-Eagle-Ultrasonic-Cleaner-0-75-Liter/BE1163
6 inch digital calipers can be had for as low as USD $10- Two pair for $30 is not a bad price if the Bald Eagle quality control is decent. They all look the same, but the reseller has to pay a bit more if they want stricter quality controls from the factory. I normally have to check out about half a dozen units at my local Harbor Fright to find a one that does not lose a couple thou by opening 5 inch and then closing.

Hex bit magnetized mini screwdriver handle from Smith and Wesson. At 45 cents, buy a couple dozen, and be generous to all your friends!

I've been wanting to get an ultrasonic cleaner for some time now, especially for the small parts, so I went ahead and ordered one of these.
Thanks for the heads up!
Just got the latest Grizzly Sale Brochure in the mail today.
Some of their stuff is not competitive, a little over-priced compared to others -- such as the Milwaukee tools compared to Home Depot. Other things they offer -- no one else offers. And some of the things they offer are real solid values.
The 6 piece gunsmithing screwdriver fixed blade hollow ground set is on sale once again for $10.97!
These are the same as Brownells -- and they are the most common and used sizes for reel work and gunsmithing.
Last time they were on sale -- I bought (4) sets. One for the upstairs shop, outside shop, the mobile reel repair/servicing go-bag, and one I gave to a member.
I have found these to be extraordinary tools for reel work.
Best,
Fred

Good Morning, Stan --
Good question!
Shipping is just part of the convenience that allows us to purchase items online --
Even at $9.99 for shipping -- these are a bargain.
However, that is why I ordered (4) sets -- the minimum amount for free shipping to qualify was $40. So you just game the system by figuring out other things you might need from Grizzly's 750 page catalog -- which is online, as well as a printed version for the bathroom.
Or pay the $9.99 -- but I would find additional items to order.
Set up an account with Grizzly -- it is free. Get their catalog. Also call their customer service for any questions, coupons, specials, or guidance when ordering. They are pleasant, knowledgeable, and very responsive.
The internet, reliable and fast shipping, and solid online firms -- are what allow us to enjoy our reel work and passion for our hobbies even more than ever before. Just part of the deal.
Best,
Fred
Just ordered a set of the gunsmithing screwdrivers from Grizzly, thanks for the heads up!
Did not find JIS phillips style screwdrivers in the online catalog, what's a good source for them? What are common sizes for reels?
Thanks, Kal
Hi Kal --
A Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) Screwdriver will work with regular Phillips screws without stripping out the head of the screw.
However, a typical Phillips screwdriver that is not JIS will seldom work on a JIS screw without damaging or ruining the screw head.
For reel work, only 2 or 3 sizes are ever needed. Lots of sources around. Plenty of companies and brands.
I use Vessels -- and also Wiha -- but a little comparison shopping will be useful.
I use the JIS for most Phillips -- from vehicles (Toyota & a Subaru), electronics, carbs, computers, etc..
Products made in China, as a rule, will benefit from using JIS screwdrivers -- but are generally not JIS screws (just the cheapest bulk they can source). JIS screws are typically marked with a dot -- and are more expensive -- and are generally found in higher quality products. My Honda mower, for example, and others.
Best,
Fred
https://youtu.be/YlG-NG7UkgE
Sizes 0, 1, 2 good for starters?
Yeah, that would work -- and I also use a #3 for other projects that are a little larger than reels.
Lots of very good quality drivers out there today.
Figure out your sizes, your company choice based on reviews, then shop a few sources for the best value for what you need.
Best,
Fred
Thanks Fred

Yes, that was a promotion during March & April, Mark --
There is a shipping charge now.
Many things we buy on Amazon Prime -- have "free shipping" also.
However, if you look closely at the prices -- they are often increased enough to pay for the "free shipping".
Generally, we will go directly to the retailer, or Wal-Mart, Home Depot, LL Bean, Lands End, etc. -- to get a lower price with either free shipping if offered -- or a lower overall $$$ outlay for the product and the shipping.
Then we need to decide if the wait that sometimes occurs with retailers who are not geared up for shipping and tracking swiftly, like Amazon -- is worth it, or not.
Sometimes, we wait for a free shipping promotion -- instead of buying now -- and about half the time the item we want is still there and on sale -- the other half of the time -- the price has gone back to retail, or the item is sold out. That is the chance we take.
Best,
Fred
Me too. Free shipping with Prime isn't always a good deal. I've bought small items where the shipping was more then the price of the item. I saw something I wanted that was $30+$30 for shipping... I just said no. If I want something from a store that's 30 miles away and my truck gets 16 mpg I have to factor in the 4 gallons of gas and often just order it and pay the shipping. Ya know, there's no free lunch.
Yep, words of wisdom Mark. That gas pedal costs money every time we push it.
My package of the Grizzly 6-piece Gunsmithing Screwdriver Sets arrived last night.
Excellent quality for $10.95 for sure,
I have NEVER used a Gunsmith style screwdriver, so let's see how it works.
I grabbed my Penn 349H reel, and my first screwdriver selection was the perfect fit. And what I mean by perfect fit is just ZERO SLOP, no screwdriver tip movement in the screw slot. WOW!!!!! Where have these tools been for me in the past???? Again, I've heard of Gunsmith screwdrivers, BUTT have never spent the time to investigate just how great they are to use.
The 0.030" tip screwdriver was THE perfect fit. It REELY was!!!!!!
The fit was SO TIGHT, I would love to use an often said statement by my Dad, BUTT here the Moderators would shut me down. Love you Dad!!!!

Dominick, you are going to love using these screwdrivers when your set arrives!!!!! ;D
THANK YOU Fred for the suggestion to each purchase a set. Man, the craftsman screwdrivers that my parents gave me for my 15th birthday just might be retired to the tool bin. Just might.
Wayne
Craftsman screwdrivers are excellent tools, and have their place, Wayne --
For me, that is general mechanical work such as vehicles, equipment, household tasks, carpenter work, etc..
The difference with these gunsmithing, fixed blade, hollow ground drivers is that they won't goober up a screwhead -- and you have a better chance of removing a toughly bonded screw with no slot damage or slippage.
This is important to me when working on my own reels -- but particularly for someone else who has entrusted me to service and restore their reels for them. We have all seen and acquired reels with messed up screw slots. Wrong drivers, inexperience, over-confidence, in a hurry, amateur hour, etc.
First time I realized this was around 40+ years ago -- I acquired an old Savage O/U double with a .22 topside -- and .410 under. Went to remove a few screws for a cleaning and inspection -- messed up every screw I touched.
Pros like gunsmiths, watchmakers, and antique restorers -- take pride in their work. And we should do the same with our reels.
There is a great amount of satisfaction, at least for me -- in doing the job right.
Best,
Fred
The hollow ground, parallel sides is the trick. It provides significantly more surface engagement. This also lets the tips be heat treated with more toughness and less hardness as all that surface area increases the chance of movement before damage. I've busted the tips of several high quality flat ground screwdrivers, only time I've done that with parallel sides is when using an impact. Whatever the grind, an impact will eventually wipe out a bit.

I heard from UPS. They will be delivered today. I won't see them until I get back to San Mateo probably at the end of the month. Nice pictures, was it on your iphone? Dominick

Dominick,
YES, I used my iPhone for the quick pics.
Since you won't be down in San Mateo for a month, how bout I'll stop by your home, pick up YOUR ::) set of screwdrivers and send it to MO65!!!!
He was hopefully expecting a gift set in the mail!!!!!!! ;D
Let's do a Dominick-handcrafted & homemade Cappicuno and raisin danish when you return. For sure.
Wayne
You got it. A handmade Capistrano or whatever you mean. :D Mo is such a good contributor to the site I was tempted to send them to him, but I resisted the temptation. Sorry Mo. :'( Dominick
If Mo (Mike) doesn't have a set of these coming -- I would send him one of mine.
Let me know guys -- as soon as you figure it out. 😂😂😂
Sort of like watching a high pop ball fall to the ground -- while the left, center, and second baseman all watch it -- expecting the other guy to snag it -- we don't want to be those guys.
Maybe Mike already has a set on the way? Mo??.

That is still only around $6.50 for each driver. And a comparable set from Brownells is considerably more -- by perhaps nearly 2.5 times...
It is good to look at the whole picture.
