Title: Salt and corrosion in a saltist 40H
Post by: mhc on August 26, 2017, 10:11:09 AM
I picked up a 40H as a parts reel - the add said it was not working / for parts, the anti reverse didn't work - so I'm not complaining about the reel, just showing what I found. When it arrived it was very stiff - almost locked up, the clutch wouldn't disengage, the anti reverse bearing slipped and the mechanical dog didn't engage.

And here's why;

A spring wouldn't help the dog, I can't move it with my thumbnail, I think it might be time to try the Simple Green treatment I've been reading about here.

Try soaking it in vinegar

Simple Green won't work. Try vinegar or, my preference, Salt-X. BTW:I see reels like this frequently...

Interesting Mike, thanks for posting, looks life it may have had a swim in the ocean, I am thinking, vinegar, not for to long, keep your eye on it, then follow up with transmission oil & acetone 50/50, after that I would use a little heat, maybe hot hot water, straight out of the kettle, good luck, cheers Don.

Try Simple Green first and you be the judge, it has always worked for me. I use mine straight from the gallon, I do not add water.
Soak the parts for a day and see what happens.
When really bad as the reel you're showing, I use a stiff brush a couple of times as it soaks.

Good point Sal, thanks for sharing, I have never seen simple green here in Western Australia, I think it is the same as, Cussons morning fresh dish washing liquid, ultra concentrate, some of you Aussie maybe able to clear this up for me, cheers Don.

I do not believe Simple Green is the same thing as "Cussons morning fresh dish washing liquid" -- or any dish washing liquid. If you were to use it to wash your dishes, your hands would not like it. It is designed primarily to cut great in mechanical applications, not dishes. It will remove all of the natural oils in your hands. I like it to remove old caked on grease -- but never leave metal in over night because it can damage metal, especially aluminum.  Salt-X removes corrosion fairly quickly and is non toxic.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I've used vinegar a lot in the past but I haven't had a reel this bad before and thought it would be a good time to try some of the methods used here. Simple Green is available here (Bunnings have it Don  - not sure about the West Coast though) and Salt-X is available from one of the local tackle shops - I'll get both and give them a try, there's enough salt in this reel to share around.
I've got a small ultrasonic cleaner Alan, the side plates will fit but the frame will only fit half at a time.
In the meantime, I've been putting a few drops of TSI 321 on the pinion hoping to free it up a bit. Hats off to akfish, handi2, Sal and anyone else that regularly take on reels like this for customers who have an expectation they will make it like new.

Mike any update on the reel?

Not really Bill, I managed to get the pinion off after a few days with TS I321. The spool bearing under the pinion took a few more days of TSI 321 drops and then an hour in the ultrasonic with CLR. I marked the spool a bit trying to lever the bearing off - should of put something under the screw driver I used. I haven't cleaned the bearing yet but it feels OK with the TSI 321.

The spool wouldn't come out of the frame until the pinion was removed and the TSI 321 slowly spread through the salt and stuff. It seems to have dissolved a fair bit of the rubbish. The photo below is how the gear side of the frame looks now without any cleaning at all.

I haven't got back to the rest of the reel yet, but I have picked up some simple green concentrate to try but haven't got any saltX yet.

Looks like you're winning, will become a good useful reel still!

I no one tried to crank the reel when it was jammed up the gears should be good. After you get that last bearing out under the drive shaft write down the measurements and ill send a set to you. I can also send you a Carbontex set. This way the reel will stay super cheap ;D

Thanks for the offer Keith, but I've got a few spare bearings and a set of carbontex washers I bought for a 30T that didn't need them. Thanks for the reminder to finish cleaning this reel as well  ;D
