Title: Best Conventional Reels Made, List Your Top 5
Post by: southland on August 18, 2013, 11:53:26 AM
If you could have only 5 conventional reels, what would they be listed in order of preference, 1 to 5.

Southland that's a heck of a question for being your very first post ;D. Welcome aboard.
I guess I'll be the first to reply. I hope no one gets surprised by my choices ;D
In no particular order, I like them the same..... all have their place:
Penn 114H&113H Tanks
        112H
        501
        100
All of the above loaded to the brim with upgrades ;).

I like many more, but you only gave 5 choices.

Thanks Alto. Yeah, I know it's a pretty big question. I am a former freshwater fishing addict and recently decided I'm going to do more saltwater fishing, something new. I figure if a reel is in someones top 5 it would be an OK reel to purchase. Didn't want to list a specific type of fishing or species I am after, too much differences of opinion on lever drag/star drag, 2 speed/1 speed, reel size, etc. Just wanted to know what everyone's favorite reels were.

I believe it's a good way to start...as you're doing, the only problem is that you might still be undecided after receiving all your answers ;D.
Good luck with your search, if you have any specific question on any of the reels, there are many members here that could help you.

It's hard to list them in order because it depends on what you are going after. But 5 of my favorites are ( in no particular order) are all Penn's, 114HLW, 113HLW, 112H tuna special, International 50W Cal's 2 speed, & my Penn Fierce 7000 spinner. Wow, that was hard leaving out a bunch more.    Rudy

My choices are Newell 332-5, 533-4.6, 338-5, 540-3.2 and 631-3.1. Only upgrades needed are CFs, all have stainless gears and the 500s and 600s have double dogs.
The Tiburon frames do add a little stiffness but not a necessity.

#1 - progear classic series 500 or 501 - 50# spectra (if i could only have one reel)
#2 - ambassaduer 4600C3 - 40# spectra
#3 - shimano tld 13/30 - 60# spectra
#4 - shimano tld 20 two speed - 80# spectra
#5 - penn international 50II - 130# spectra

very interesting question.  my answer is based on the fishing that i personally do, or could ever forsee myself doing.  i would also want the most economical reel that would give me the best level of performance.  the only reel that i think is a bit exhorbtant is the progear, but that's just because i really like the reel.

1 Newell Tuna Special, the more I fish it the more I love it.
2. Newell Marlin Special, the Tuna Special's big brother.
3. A 20 sized graphite frame caster. 320 GTi Alan's way, Diawa SLH-20 etc
4. 114HLW full aluminum frame.
5. Diawa Millionaire 300A CV-X/Z Fished day in and day out for over 10 years and will fish it till I'm gone. Thousands of fish and no issues.

Penn Senators, in order of preference.

115  Caught the most fish with these.
117  Caught the largest fish on these.
113H  Because I'm older and it's not easy casting the heavier reels.  It will work its way up as I get older.
116  Good "in between" size reel (between 14/0 and 9/0).
116A  Has good balance, like the 14/0, but mine has a three-piece spool so I really don't use it.  If it came with an aluminum spool, I'd use it in place of the 12/0.  I may one day be tempted to cast my own aluminum spool for it.

Well that is a hard one there are so many different ways to fish for different fish but here it goes.
All upgraded to the max.
112H
113H
114H
Then I would have to go with the Fin nor 6500
ABU6500

But then I have so many other reels for so many other applications it is impossible to have a reel that fits all situations, at least that's what I tell my wife when I pick up a new one. And then you have the rods the line and all the tackle that go with them. I sure am glad my wife understands and supports my habit  ;) or at least she humors me. And I can still do work in the house sometimes.  ::)

cost was one factor for me.  ease of service the other. and then performance.  getting them to work well is easy once you go through them.  i would want reels that would be less expensive to purchase and easy to work on.  that's why i chose the old school penn international and the tld 20II.

Great question SL - really enjoyed reading everyone's responses so far.
I'm in the same boat as others here, in terms of the brand mix:
Like Sal, all of the above "are loaded to the brim with upgrades" ;).
All that could be done has been done (aside from a Tib kit for the 349, which I'm still considering).
I feel bad for leaving out my 'Bluefin Special' 9500SS, but that's another thread entirely  ;) ;D
Cheers, Justin

Interesting question....I do mostly long range fishing now, started by taking 10 outfits and have now pared that down to 7 or 8 but have similar reels on some.

1) Tiagra 50W LRS, 200 Pound Spectra, 200 pound topshot.  Makes for a great kite reel.

2) Penn 50 (Just recently got a new VSX, but for years used a 50S) filled with 130 pound Spectra, 100 Pound Topshot.  Use for live bait, both large and small.  Caught most of my 200+ pound fish on this size reel.

3) Shimano TTS 50W, 200 Pound Spectra, 130 Pound top shot.  Use for wahoo trolling and big bait fishing.  Caught my biggest fish on these reels.  I'm a glutton here, I have 4 of them   ;D.

4) Makaira 30IISEa  Use for live bait.  Just used them for one year but so far found them to be great. Great freespool and smoothly operating drag system.  I can cast a sardine 40-60 feet with this set up.

5) Shimano Trinidad, TN40.  I have three.  Set one up with a wahoo bomb.  Set one up with a jig.  Set one up to fish live bait for wahoo with light wire.

I still have some reels I use for local fishing but don't do that much any more.

I'll list mine by # test.

15lb= Penn 525 Mag
20-25lb= Avet SX
30lb= Penn Fathom 25N (I would like a Torque better but don't own one)
40lb= Avet JX 6/3
80-100lb= Okuma Makiara 20SE

You said only 5 so I have a gap in 50 and 60 lb test.

I fish mostly down in Cabo.  So I mostly* use these 5:

Penn International 50 VSW
Penn International 30 ll
Penn International Torque 300
Penn International Torque 100
Penn Senator 114 HLW

*Now that I have the "Tank" I have to eliminate one from the list.  Any suggestions?

Hey Ron, glad to see another fan of that reel, it's the predecessor of my Luna 300 I believe. I don't have 5 favorites, but my top 2 are:

1: Penn Torque 100 (anybody got an aluminum balanced handle for it out there?)
2: Daiwa Luna 300 (wish it had a better clicker and backup IAR though) Still it's like butter smooth and a mini tank!

1) I have to admit that my TLD 15, 20 and 25 single speeds have been very, very good to me for light trolling 20-40lb test mono for almost 20 years. I have the original made in Japan models. Since I will only list one, I will go with the middle of the pack TLD 20.

2)  Penn International 50TWs and 50SWs for my heavier trolling. Again no problems. I will pick the single speed 50TW for the list due to simplicity of use.

3) Penn Senators. All of mine are  USA models from 4/0 to 12/0. None have been modified except for drag washers. The newcomer 113HN Baja Special, however, gets my vote for the best overall Senator for my use.

4) Shimano Toriums. All are Alan Tani upgraded. Economical reels for multi use. I will choose the 16 size as my favorite.

5)  ABU Garcia Black Max 6600W. I use this for plug casting to Jacks and Mackerel. Lots of fun.

Well most of them are plastic or are 400 to 1000 bucks, way out of my price range and fish don't care if the reel is a 30 year old upgraded Penn or a 700 dollar spinning reel. Go figure, some have to have all the latest but some of us still enjoy the best.

I like Alan's approach, of picking the best value reel.

I have been wondering whether I could afford a two speed 20 that would handle 80 lb braid or 60 mono. I can't budget for $300+. Until now I've been afraid of the graphite frames, but if Alan would fish a TLD 20 with 80, that's a pretty good endorsement.

You could fish 200lb test on them if you wanted but don't go past around 19-20lbs of drag without a metal frame upgrade. I have a TLD 30II and with a aftermarket parts of a aluminum frame and sideplate, carbontex drag, drag plate, handle arm and grip and I'd still feel my 20SE way out fishes it in the 80-100lb class.

Hi All,

We all obviously have too many reels and have a hard time picking just 5. Personally, having switched from boat to surf fishing, the task is even more difficult. Here's my choice, a mixture of both:

•   Release SG – straight from the box.
•   Avet MXL Mag – converted to lower magnetic effect, but speeded up with ceramic bearings.
•   Duel Speedy 12 – awesome little reel for Sailfish and light trolling.
•   Penn International 16 2 speed – a powerhouse.
•   Tiagra 30 2 speed – winch!!!!

Never fished more than 30lbs off the boats, so never needed the 'big guns'. Though this has been difficult, there are a few reels that I would have in reserve to cover specific fishing applications like extreme distance light surf fishing would require my Penn 525 Xtra Super Mag, and for Tigerfish on the Zambezi I wouldn't be without my Finnor Megalite 4000.

Cheers from sunny Africa

Jeri

Ok, so if the lowest price to performance ratio is being used here, my two picks still shine:

1: Penn Torque 100 - got it for only $200 on clearance, brand new, that's 1/2 price.
2: Daiwa Luna 300 - Christmas present from my girlfriend at the time, yeah baby!

On a side note, I just can't get excited about low profile reels either! LOL

I am with Albert on this one.
1.)Penn 12/0, good average reel for bigger fish with the extra line capacity. Not as heavy as the 14 or 16.
2.)Penn 6/0, From a P-60 extra wide to a plain jane post model. This reel is amazing and abundant.
3.)113H Tank, Ridiculous what this little reel can do. Sal has made this a master piece!
4.)Penn 14/0, When really nothing else will do. Strap on the harness and Git-R-Done!
5.)Penn 16/0, The Legend. Biggest and Baddest!
My dream reel is an Everol 2 speed 12/0. Will get one some day. Also a penn International 50. I like your style Dom!
I like to keep it simple. The old Senators are for me!  ;D

Quoteevery man should have a John Der tractor, a Winchester model 70, and a Mitchell 300!

I don't have any of those, don't have any use for any of those, and don't have any plans to get any of those.  Does that mean.....?

I'm currently working on an Everol Cairns 14/0.  I've also worked on Penn International and Shimano Beastmaster (for lever drag reels).  In my view, the Everol would be my reel of choice if I could get my hands on a 2-speed model (thought I did but the owner sold it to someone else before I got there to pick it up....so nice of that lady, after I'd already purchased many other things from her).  Ahem, I digress.  Anyway, although not the most sophisticated design, the Everol is made like a massive super tank that appeals to the meat hunter in me.  It's heavy, clumsy, and is like a winch.  Just my style.

For Sharkhunter, I have a beat up Intl. 50 that could be yours for a very affordable price since I'm finished playing around with it.  It's too small for the big stuff, too heavy for the small stuff, and since I've beaten it up quite well, the bling is gone (so is the romance that I initially had for it).  It's not the winch I thought it was and has not served me well.  It's only been a prototype for me to test different ideas on.

I said every man should have, not your not a man if you don't have. I don't currently have a model 70 and it doesn't make a lot of sense to have one on Oahu, but if the rite one comes along it will be hung on the wall. I have several Mitchels but to be honest, I can't remember the last time I fished one.

For surf fishing this year I have been using and like:
Penn Mag Power 970's and 980's

My favorite reel for 15# up to sometimes 25# is a PG 255
My Favorite reel for 25# up to sometimes 50# is a PG 545

For long range fishing using 100# line I love my Penn International 20's.

With that said, the past couple of years I have been fishing many old Penn reels and they are a lot of fun.  This weekend I am going on a 2 day trip and taking 3 narrow Penn 4/0's (black side plate), one standard Penn 349, one wide Penn 349, and either a Penn Squidder 146 or Jigmaster 501.

Lads, just thought I'd let ya know that, as per my all-time list above and thanks to AT member Andrew/raumati, I'm now 'tanking' my 349HC with what I assume is a fairly rare Tiburon kit...
Will be basically a narrow 6/0, with steel 113H gears (1:3.25), 6/0 AT handle, 7+1 drag from Lee and S/S sleeve.
Everything's done, bar the double-dog - which I'm yet to figure out.
Will keep yas updated...

I use these  abu 7000c  abu 7500c .penn 555gs. daiwa sl50sh .daiwa 50shb.

I'll bite.

I'll go from light line to heavier and try to keep cost in mind:

Daiwa Luna series; Abu 4600/5500 trumps Luna's for value.

Daiwa SLOSH/SLX series for value, followed closely by TLD15/30 (or 20/40) star drag

Avet SX, fantastic little reel

Avet LX6/3, great 40# reel

Tied between Daiwa 600H (Sealine series) vs Penn 113H series with mods

Yeah, I fudged in some areas by listing more than one; couldnt help myself.

1. penn 113h
2. Calcutta 400TE
3. abu garcia 6500c3
4. penn 320gti

In no particular order these are the 5 preferred current reels. The top 2 are for summer San Diego tuna and bottom 3 reels are for year round Channel Island bass and yellowtail.
A top 10 list would serve my fishing style better. LOL
I'd add a lexa 300, fathom 25n/2 sp. torque 40/2 sp, curado 300ej and calcutta 200DC

Shimano Talica 12 2sp
Avet SXJ Raptor 2 speed
Shimano Curado 300dsv

well thats pretty loaded question, but if i had to take five anywhere in the world, hmmmm...

Penn 545 GS: great little trolling reel, fast and i can cast it over 100 yds on the right surf stick so dual purpose.

Penn 30STW: get er done

113H

abu 6500C3

jigmaster, just cause.

Now, everol, accurate, Daiwa SL's, avet, torium, Calcutta, Shimano TTS are all good stuff. But I'm looking at taking five anywhere, and you have to factor in relative ease of service and parts in the equation IMHO. I'll get shot but I'd probably sub a 460LL for the 500 as the 545 handles
that niche.

Quantum Cabo CNW20, #50 braid, 100yards #25 mono
Shimano TI30, 500 yards braid, 75 yards #80 mono

I don't have any Squalls. I still have a 525, 525 Mag, 535 and 545. The 525 Mag is the only one I use often. I like the 545 w/5.3:1 gears for local 30# when I don't want to risk a fancier reel getting banged up. But since I now have my own boat that isn't a problem.

Bill I like your style :)

The OP's question leaves to many variables to things like fish being targeted, method of catch and other things. So with that being the case my reply may be just as vague.

#1 The reel I'm holding when I land a fish of a lifetime.

#2 The reel a buddy is holding when he or she lands a fish of their lifetime.

#3 and 4 (This takes two spots because it is just so much fun to watch) When I'm laughing my rear end off when my buddy finds out he or she is way under gunned and I watch a fish kick their butt.

#5 A reel I'm holding when I find out I'm way under gunned and I should of stepped up to something bigger. Not as fun as 3 and 4 but it is pretty funny to me ;)

1. Maxel Transformer FC70H
2. Shimano Talica 8 (Although an Okuma Andros A would be good too)
3. Shimano Talica 12
4. Shimano Talica 25 II (Or a Makaira)

What I have instead:
1. Chinese copy of a Maxel Transformer
2. Okuma Metaloid 5Ns
3. Shimano Torium 20
4. Shimano Talica 25 II
5. Penn International II 80S

All nice reels, but I feel like I should buy more Talicas.

-Newell 200 series w/ Tib frames.
