Title: 113H gets a face lift
Post by: rippin_lips on November 14, 2016, 01:00:51 AM
My dad had an old crusty 113H that he said he bought at a garage sale many years ago. It has been used and abused and still functioned fine but didn't look so good. I didn't want to put a ton of money into it but I found some nice side plates with clean chrome rings, bearings, gears and all. I would use the handle and bars from the old reel, and use the best internals from the two sets. Both plates had the drags accessible from the outside. The "new" plates had old crap drag washers but the old reel had 5 useable carbon drag washers. What is the drag washer arrangement supposed to be? I can only fit 5 carbon washers with 2 eared and 2 keyed washers. On top of the 5th carbon washer sits the big thick top hat looking piece and then Belleville and star. Is this correct? I will show some before pictures, but I'm waitinng on a new aluminum spool to do the final after assembly.

You will need 3 keyed & 2 eared washers. The order going into the main gear are, CF, keyed, CF, eared, CF, keyed, CF, eared, CF, keyed. You might need 1 extra keyed washer on top of the stack if you need more height. The drag stack has to end with a keyed washer then the top hat, then bellville, then star, then handle.       Rudy

That's what I thought, but when I do that the stack is very high. I took these washers out so they should go back in, I'm kinda confused. I'll have to mess with it some more.

RL...you might try soaking the spool in 50/50 vinegar/water for a couple hours and see what comes of it....  Bill

I'm cleaning up everything with vinegar and simple green. I'll have spare parts left over, but I wanted to have a nice aluminum spool.

The last keyed washer will be above the lip of the gear but it can't go anywhere & doesn't need the support of the gear to work correctly.     Rudy

Good point Rudy. It sounds like that might be rippin' lips' concern...the washers resting above the gear. As long as that last eared washer is inside the gear...all is well.

The mail showed up with the finishing touches, a newell spool and spacer bars.  The bars aren't perfect but don't look bad.  I'm thinking of painting them though. Here's the final product....

Nice job on that 4/0 rippin lips. The grilling add got me a little confused, couldn't really see the parts. Kept seeing peanuts, chicken and pork chops, but the end results look really nice :).

I bought something on the eberg and the guy had a  4/0 Newell aluminum stand for bid so I put $6 on it and shipping was free. I don't really need it but got it for a spare,if you want it to complete your Newell set on the 4/0 let me know. I should have it next week. Sheridan

Didn't see this until now. Thanks for the offer but I'm just going to use the original stand.

I didn't feel the need to start another thread, but I'm on another 113H project. Bought a tiburon frame and spool from an AT member. Then I found a donor reel on the old fleabay for under $50. Turned out to be in good shape and everything looks clean inside. Gears are nice and clean and all the drag washers are clean and not fused together. Not quite sure exactly where this one will end up. I'm thinking of doing the second dog with the Dremel and of course adding the frame. Not sure what else I will do.

P.s. I found the Belleville washer on top of the drag stack inside the reel

Looks like you caught the bug ;D. The belleville being on top of the drag stack  is normal on those.
Enjoy your builds.

Everything got a soak in simple green and came out looking great. The internals were really in good shape in this reel.  The harness lugs are pretty loose, is this normal? Also the eccentric lever isn't clearing the side plate screw. Anybody have any levers with more clearance? Or should I see if a different screw sits more flush? Anyways, this reel is turning out really nice and I think it deserves some upgrades under the hood soon.

That reel looks new, great job! The eccentric lever looks good to me, see if the screw has some rough spots on the slot, maybe try another screw there. Also, make sure the eccentric screw is tight.
If it still does the same, you could gently bend the lever a little, it doesn't take much.
As for the harness lugs, it's normal. If it bothers you a little shot of silicone would help, or a shim. I would let it go.

Unless you are going to use this harnessed-up, the loose harness lugs won't matter. Being the perfectionist that I am, I would make some shims and firm them up, but it'sn not necessary unless they'll be used.

Guys,

I have a 113HLW on a TIBURON frame with ACCURATE sideplates and have the problem of one of the Harness Lugs "wiggling around" . . . What do you guys recommend about making shims . . . Materials, etc ?

Hey Dave, can you get a Teflon washer from HD or lowes and snad edge to fit within?

That sounds like an interesting option . . . I don't know if it would loosen up, over time, with the Teflon being compressed.

Thanks & Tight Lines !

I'd cut a shim out of a soda or beer can. Easy to cut with a pair of scissors after drilling a hole for the screw.               Rudy

maybe Im kind of late on this but when I have had problems like this on which I have make exterior shims in a hurry, I have used the plastic from the milk gallons, I read somewhere that the material is pretty similar to Delrin, you can make shims outta it and they will tolerate more presure or hits than normal plastic, its really slippery and easy to cut and the best is that it will never corrode with saltwater.
