Just wondering if there are some side plates with metal ring that will fit the 85 Seaboy? I really like this reel. It's compact and narrow sspool is perfect for me fishing offshore in a kayak.
Yep, long beach 60 sideplates have inner rings and otherwise is basically the same reel

Is the inner gearing the same in both reels or does the Long Beach 60 have stronger gearing?

It's exactly the same. This was the difference between Penn's reels and most manufacturers. No matter how much bling was stripped from a model, it had just as good an "engine" as the flagship model. That kind of philosophy is long gone though...and really hard to believe when most all you ever see now is "cheaper is junkier". :-\
A modern day Seaboy 185 is same reel too, but with graphite sideplates and bigger drags and higher gear ratio
Mo can give you more lowdown about the seaboy 185

Indeed, the Seaboy 185 is the "upgraded" Seaboy 85, both stronger and faster. They do seem to succumb to corrosion easily if abused, but that's nothing a fresh water rinse after use won't cure. I use this wider Seaboy 190 on head boats...it's a blast to fish. 8)

Is that an aluminum spool on the 190?

Yes, both the seaboy 185 & 190 come with aluminum spools
