Title: Jigging World Tile/Tuna Rod
Post by: coastal_dan on March 20, 2015, 01:20:02 PM
I was looking for a universal offshore rod on the cheap and they tend to get hard to find!  I had my heart set on a Tiger Lite, but after lots of research I passed on these (sorry Redfish12 :-\).  I wanted something 6'-6" or longer since I'd be using this on a head boat majority of the time.  Reels in use will be a Tanked Jigmaster, Accurate Fury and hopefully a 6/0 in the future.

So I found this rod on Jigging World, which as a vendor here and someone I follow on facebook, I wanted to give it a shot...

http://www.jiggingworld.com/jigging-world-ois-661-60c-tile-fish-tuna-rod/

We'll see if she is up to the task  ;D  At 134.99 shipped it seemed like a decent deal.

I haven't seen the rod yet, but I can say they have FANTASTIC shipping time service.  I ordered the rod Wednesday afternoon; my wife just called me 8:15 am Friday and said the rod was delivered!  Less than 48 hours is insane!

Once I get home I'll take close up pictures and fill you guys in.

Can you tell I'm excited?

Is that a cork foregrip?  Pretty neat!

No Dan It's an EVA fore grip. Much better for a utility rod. I like cork for my fancier sticks especially the inlays. I still have to Epoxy the guides and butt wrap, and have my wife do the marbling....this will be the first rod she is doing anything on, but what can go wrong :D :o

Maybe the handle, which is wood. The original rod had a cork fore grip but it was in bad shape and had to be removed and I decided on EVA for a different look and use. Nice thing about using an old rod that otherwise would have been chucked in the garbage, you can't really screw it up.

No worries Dan! Looks like a better fit anyway. I had an opportunity to fish one of the black demon rods on Tog trip in January and I was impressed! Parabolic / soft tip but tons of backbone which was exactly what we needed that day because we were fishing 150 ft and it helped us not pull the crabs out of their mouths!

Well the rood looks and feels great, just had a bent guide.  Jigging World has been great in responses to emails and they are sending out another rod with a prepaid shipping label to send back the other one.  A+ transaction so far for the situation.  Pics to come I promise  ;D

You guessed it. Not sure what class rod it was or is but it should be good for Tog and Fluke, maybe even Stripe Bass, it's to short for surf casting but would work for live lining eel or bunker. For pier or inlet it's a good stick for short casting for fluke and tog. My wife did some marble work on it,it was her first time so it's pretty good. She did the area between the butt wrap and stripper guide. I took this picture.

30 lb mono on their currently, I'll be purchasing another spool and filling it with 500 yds of 50 lb braid though in the next week or so.  The thought is to use it deep water bottom bouncing and at 150-600 ft the mono isn't the best choice, in my opinion.

Dan

Check with the boat you plan to fish on because some boats don't allow Braided Line. I would get an extra spool just in case.

I bought the same rod. Have you noticed that the specs on the web page don't match the specs on the rod? I've been meaning to ask JW about that.

Yes, the rod is shown differently on the website.  But I did some tests with different weights and it is quite a sturdy stik.  It would have no issue dropping down 2 lbs of weight...not sure I would be comfortable dropping down there advertised 5 lbs but maybe some would.  I'll be using it for 8 oz - 24 oz of lead majority of the time so hopefully I can add to this over the next few months on how its holding up.

Dan

What do you plan on using 24oz. Sinkers for? We use 12-24oz. for off shore Wreck fishing - Cod, Pollack & Sea Bass in the Fall - Winter. You can also use Gold or Silver Hammered Jigs 8oz & up.

If your planning on Tuna the West Coast Jigs work at times & so does the Gold & Silver Hammered Jigs Some are called Tuna Candy. For bait you need Egg Sinkers 6oz. & 12oz. You let out the desired amount of line & then let the Egg Sinker slide down the line. Then you need a Custom Rod Holder. This goes into the boats rod holder & ties to the rail of the boat. Everyone that I know uses Steel Pipe for this. You get a 3' pc. of 1" Black Pipe with a thread on 1 end & Weld a piece of 1 1/2" pipe at a 30* angle to the 1" pipe. Get an extra piece of 1" Black Pipe with a thread on 1 end with a Coupling just in case the boat rod holder is low on the Gunnel. This is enough info to keep you busy for a while,

Mike

Mike - Thanks for the info!  Yes, my plan is to use it bottom fishing...mostly offshore Sea Bass.  On the rare occasion I try to hook up with sharks on my kayak this will also be used  ;D.  I would like to do a Cod trip next year around this time, I've been watching the fishing reports of the Ocean Explorer lately and it looks hit or miss but the fish are beautiful.

You have to check the Voyager from Pt. Pleasant NJ. Last weeks trip had many Cod over 20#. He does Cod, Tile & Tuna almost all year. The boat has heated hand rails for the cold weather season.

You can't beat the fishing here that is for sure, When I had good legs I spent many days on the water and can't tell you how many fish me and my brother caught over the years. Now me and my wife fish as often as we can but off the shore in the inlets and canals. Good luck with the new rod Dan, maybe we will run into each other some day.

After actually testing this rod I am very happy with it as a lighter Tilefish rod, I don't think I would drop more than 30 oz. with it though, but that is my opinion.  With 24 oz. and a 10 lb fish it had some good bend in it and was perfect for that situation.  I think it is going to be a great seabass rig as well.  The grip is phenominal, very comfortable and dries quickly, I found that it didn't get as slimy as just the straight up EVA foam.

I love the rod for what I use it for (Blue Line Tilefish, Seabass, Cod, Hake, other NE bottom feeders), but would say it is NOT a Tuna or Golden Tilefish rod.  A decent size fish would over power the blank, again my opinion.

Hope this helps!
