These west coast folks get together for fishing trips on a regular basis. And I'm sure it's easier because it seems a majority of the members live near the Pacific, many seemingly in Cali.
But what about the rest of us? Would there be any interest in organizing a Gulf of Mexico charter trip that leaves from somewhere in FL? Near me would be cool but not a requirement.
Just throwing out a wild hare idea.
I might be in on an Atlantic side trip...
Jason,
My cousin lives in Destin,We have been out on this one particular party boat several times, and limited out on red snapper.
Where are you located? I am retired now in GA. and can go whenever? We also like flat fishing for speckled trout and reds. Destin has a fishing rodeo and seafood festival every October, it's a good time to be there and not so hot. The 1st offshore trip I ever went on was out of Savannah,GA. (31 years ago now), a 6 man trip 30 miles out. We caught king mackerel (on outriggers), Mahi mahi, amber jack, and barracuda.
please keep us posted!!!!! ;D
There is Hubbards 39 he trip in Treasure Island FL
Morehead city have headboat trips in last week's of September to November,,,, ;) Savannah ga has great fishing but only been to there air museum,,,,, :D southern Florida Atlantic side has great fishing all year,,,,, :-\ so if we can get something together,,,,,,, ;D
Definitely Maybe!
Destin is in driving distance.

Go for it,
shall we have a zoom meeting?
My twin brother, Bennie and I have been talking about a few East Coast fishing dates we need to put on the calendar.
When are the runs or best time to fish there?
I live in S GA, have a place at Mexico Beach (Panama City area). Anywhere from Tampa to Pensacola is within my driving distance for GoM fishing. Heck, I've driven non-stop to Venice, LA (and back!) for a 2 day deep drop trip.
For Atlantic fishing, I can handle Cape Canaveral to Morehead City.
Be nice to get a Gulf or SE Atlantic trip together.
Mike
Well, we've reached the point of interest where the potential participants can no longer fit in a canoe. It's a start.
I'm in Tampa. There's a lot of parts of Georgia that are closer to me than Destin. That doesnt mean it's a dealbreaker if everyone else prefers that but it wouldnt be my first choice.
Admittedly I have zero deep sea fishing experience, and honestly not a ton of experience fishing from a boat in general, I'm mostly stuck on land with some kayak action for variety. which is part of why I'd like to make this happen. As such I would need to lean on someone a bit more experienced to help me pick an ideal date relative to what we'd be targeting.

It's 2.5 hrs from Mexico Beach to Destin. And 5 hrs from MB to Tampa. If Destin ends up being the departure site, you're welcome to RON at my place in MB. Both coming and going. Assuming I get invited, of course. :)
GA Mike
Destin has a few boats going out, before covid, I was usually out in Orange beach (Gulf Shores) every month to fish.
15 hour drive for me :-)
Ok hooking a 1,000lb marlin is difficult but they are there,,,, ;) hooking a 600to800lb gothic grouper is easy in Florida,,,,, :-\ it's a hole different ball game,,,, :o it's not like bluefin the fight is quicker but harder it's so intense,,,,,,,, ;D

You're forgetting swordfish, quite comparible to tuna I'm sure.
im no expert but i would not compare a swordfish to a tuna. swords are mean and super strong with stamina. my last one at 160-170 took a lot more effort then my two cows combined, and that was with young experienced mate doin most of the work on sword. trust me one 175 will kick your butt into next tuesday and then come back and do it again.
I'll be headed down to Fla in mid Oct, have a few bud's that may join in
Guys, here are some links for Destin's October fishing rodeo and seafood festival, not so hot then, good time to be there. There is also a mullet festival in Niceville ,that's great, fresh mullet is yummie !

Would be interested in a trip on the east coast as well, have been contemplating doing a multi-day tropical fishing trip out that way for a while now. Here are a few relevant headboat operations if anyone is wondering:

The Yankee capts pully ridge trip is a bucket list trip .They don't call it Jurassic park for nothing. A bottom fisherman's smorgasbord.

I'd be interested in one of these trips. Key West (Yankeecapts) is a 700 mile drive for me vs only 300 for the Gulf Star at Tarpon Springs. Marco Island (American Patriot) is 500 miles. I've fished the Middle Grounds but never fished Pulley Ridge. 2 or 3+ day trips would be my preference. I'm booked up for 2021 with 3 west coast trips planned. But 2022 is open.
GA Mike
For the Yankee capts reservations will need to be made now for next year, they fill up fast. I don't know Capt Greg well enough to make a call or speak for him but he might be receptive to a AT trip . He does a lot of private charters and sponsored charters that book individually. Especially if its a mid week trip. The weekend trips fastest seem to fill up the fastest.l. The only drawback to a true pulley ridge trip is a electric reel is desirable for the daytime fishing. He usually fishes 600-900ft during the day. A Diawa tanacom 1000 is the reel of choice. They do have pully ridge lite trips where electric reels are not welcome. They are primarily slow pitch jigging nirvana and dead bait drift fishing trips. I've never fished the lite trips but hear they do very well.
Would be happy to get something on the books for next year at this point. I would likely lean toward a capts trip but do not have a strong preference for them vs the viking Gulfstar. I think both operations book out pretty far (especially for open grouper or snapper seasons). For work reasons I would prefer a trip that spans weekend days. What time of year were people thinking?
Look forward to fishing with you all again!
I wanna apologize for throwing an idea out there and then doing nothing to manage it.
It sounded like a good idea, which is why I threw It out there, but having literally zero experience offshore fishing means I don't know a damn thing about picking a good one or what orchestrating such a trip entails. As such I'm kinda useless here.
:) :) :) :) :) Boy Just don`t stand there , jump in to the puddle with both feet and get them wet .... You know you want too ...

Indeed, that's the idea. But in terms of the who where and when, I got nothing.
It annoys me that my more corporate brother, who owns no tackle whatsoever, and doesnt do any other fishing at all, has been on a bunch of deep sea trips with clients etc. And he rubs it in.
At least I can fire back by asking if he's ever baited his own hook, but the annoyance remains.
I'm in Philadelphia, but would consider joining an Ohana Florida charter if I could get a cheap flight. ;D
I would really love to do something like a Yankee Capts 3 day, but alas, given my tendency towards very bad motion sickness, it's a very bad idea for me. 3 days in even mildly rough water would kill me! I can handle a day trip on a calm day, otherwise it's hurlin' time. What a curse for someone who loves the ocean so much. :(
