Title: 309 Gear Change
Post by: FishermanTom81 on November 14, 2013, 11:34:45 PM
Is it possible to change the gears in a 309 so I can have a faster gear ratio?

Yes. Newell used to make a kit for doing this:

I'm sure forum members will reply with other options.

You can get them from black pearl right here on this site. These will also fit the 500 505 and the  112h

Hmm. At the very least the faster gears will need a different yoke before they will work in a 309. I'm not sure that the inside diameter of the pinion gear fits the 309 spool either. I know hat you cannot put a Jigmaster or 112H pinion in a 309. They have the same main gear but very different sized pinions.

A 309 with the Black Pearl gears? That would be great!

i don't think they are interchangeable.  the penn 309 takes a 13-85 pinion gear, not a 13-500.   the diameters are different.   :-\

I'm just going by what Carl Newell had printed on the package. Here's another Newell kit. Click on 'see original listing' and refer to picture 3:

The drag washers fit; the gears do not.

Has anyone figured out how to make these newell gears work on a 309? I have a 309 and I want to install these gears, I know the pinions are different. But I wonder why the paper says that newell gears work on 309??
