Hello everyone. Thanks Admin for hooking me up.
I have been fishing since I could hold a rod really (44 years ago).
I am always in my reels, servicing and protecting from corrosion and replacing crappy plastic bushes with bearings. A bit of polishing here and there. Reels- I use all makes and types. I am her to earn and hopefully share what little I know to others.
I used to be a tournament caster in then UK, slinging big sinkers down a filed and measuring distance in comps. Furthers cast was 273 yards with a 150g lead. The reels are magged and super tuned so I know a bit about that.
Cheers
Nathan
welcome!!!!!
Thanks Alan. Looks like a great forum.
Welcome from Tennessee, I'm sure you have plenty to contribute.
Welcome Nathan!
819 ft is a far bit eh?
I think you could show me a trick or two.......
Hi Nathan - Chris from the uK :)
I used to be able to get 200yds on a good day (a few years ago) not so much now a few years on ;)
Welcome! I look forward to learning what you have to share with us!
Welcome Nathan!
I'm sure you have some video to show us. ;)
Welcome, I have always been amazed at the distances that "professional" long distance casters can obtain. I am sure you are being modest and can contribute a whole lot on magging and tuning reels along with casting techniques.
Look forward to your contributions.
Scott
Welcome Nathan. One question. Are those long casting tuned reels also for fishing? I like to surf fish sometimes down in Baja but the undertow is pretty scary. Sometimes you get to much water behind you and the land drops off quickly. If I can get a bait out far enough I do not have to wade too deeply in the water to cast a bait out. Dominick
Welcome aboard! 8)
Hi.
Welcome Nathan, where you calling home now?

Chris. 200yds is further than most anglers can cast back home. Its a good chuck. A handy tool when fish are out reach for most!

Hi Dominick. Simple brake blocks and rocket fuel in the bearings is sufficient for fishing I find. I tend not to run my reels for beach fishing too fast...............less birdsnests and more fishing at the expense of 20 yds! What reels are you using? Bearing in mind that I use Penn Mag 525's, ABU 6500s and Diaiwa Millionaires loaded with 15lb line and 80ln shock leader.

Ask away Scott. Happy to help..........I haven't cast for 6 years since moving to the good ole USA.

Hi David. Great Britain will always be home, but for now Beaufort SC is. I love the USA.

I use a spinning reel for surf. I don't own any of the reels you mention. 15lbs is a little light for big rooster fish and jack from the surf. Dominick
Welcome !! Glad to have you here!
Welcome, from all of us. Thanks for your info on reels, we all can learn something here. Best of luck. ;)
Welcome from Salem Virginia ;D
Nice to have you with us Nathan, you have given us more info, than I have contributed in 3 years, from sunny Western Australia, have you ever cast with a side cast reel, like Alveys.
with a rod set up to suit they cast a good distance, cheers Don.
Welcome aboard!!!
I have, or have had all the reels that you listed...
What type of rods are you using?
I can toss a light jig pretty far....
Butt,,, not that far! ;D ;D ;D
Pretty impressive!!!

Here's a quick vid with using a ZZiplex Bullet and a mag controlled 6600W Blackmax, .35mm line (15lb) and a 150g (5.25oz) lead.
That's me starting the cast at 2 minutes 33 seconds and a still with the rod loaded at 2 mins 50 secs. Was a good cast, but the my forward weight transfer was crap. I was just starting to build timing and technique, but my had to stop to move to the USA.

Hi Don.
I have seen them in action on some videos, but have never used that system. I guess its because its something that's not employed in then UK. I like the concept though. I would imagine loading the line to the correct level of the spool lip is critical very much like a fixed spool /spinning reel to reduce friction.

Hi Danny. ZZiplex rods are the only beachcasters/ surf rods I use. Terry Carol was making rods for years and was iconic in the development of such rods. Sadly he is dead now, but the logo and quality still lives on. As with all casting, timing and technique and looking up is everything. Next time you cast look to the ground and see where the lead goes ...............down to the ground! Look up about 70 degrees and see where it goes. There's lots more to it than that of course.

Nathan, you mentioned that you were using a Black Max 6600W. I am wondering if there is/was a different reel sold in Europe than the 6600W that was sold in the States. I have a ABU BM 6600W that is a pretty run of the mill (cheap and non-magged) baitcaster with a levelwind. I couldn't imagine my reel being able to cast like that with the level wind or even without the level wind.

Scott, The models are the same, I used to import mine from ebay USA to the UK. I don't have my reels here to show you any pics as they are in the UK. Here is a typical example of one used for casting ( silver version, but same thing)

First thing is to chop out the top half of the cage and re-profile. This is to allow the thumb right over the top for gripping the spool. Next is to remove level wind and replace with a stainless conversion bar for rigidity.
A new LH sideplate needs to be made and the fitted with a mag unit. I like the 660Ow for .35 line and 150 g lead as line level drops less quickly with a wider spool reducing the breaking affect.
Ever noticed how an empty spool spins faster...............this slows the lead don by effectively braking the reel.
Seems a shame to 'butcher; such a nice reel, but needs must. I use the BM series for all lead sizes.

Always up for some banter lads! everything turned out great in the end with both countries now being the closest allies in the world.
It was a bit greedy for the brits to fight a war 3500 miles away with the Atlantic in-between. We were at war with the frogs at the time, who were only 22 miles away. It was a bit too ambitious to try it with the USA as well ???

I can do both ( bighead). I do tend to use whatever I feel is natural.........a bit mixed up really. I'll keep it to old school on here Steve.

The most interesting times in the history of the world as far as I'm concerned. I can't get my hands on enough books on the subject. One of my favorites, The Verney Family Letters. One day I hope to visit Middle Claydon House.

Hi. Some did and still do. Easy to convert and low profile so you could get a good grip on the spool. Like the Black Max series, they are like hens teeth in the UK as most have been chopped and butchered.
