Title: Bearing removal for awkward pinion bearings.
Post by: simonb on October 28, 2018, 05:30:23 PM
Tools needed.

Engineering dowel same size as inside of bearing.

In this case it's a 1/4 inch dowel. The are tapered to go into a 1/4 inch hole on one end. The chamfered end.

Add a bearing in a blind hole that won't come out easily.

In this case a little Avet SXJ.

Hold case in hand and push the dowel into the bearing. When it gets tight tap it in with a calibrated hammer [1].

The dowel will slide all the way in.

Now using a suitable punch tap it out from the other side using a calibrated hammer [1].

And there it is.

[1] Calibrated hammer Toolmakers term for any size hammer but don't hit it too hard.

Same sort of thing again:

I use Tri-Flow Expensive but does a superb job. It's also very good for freeing stuck spigot's on rods. Leave it to soak for 8 hrs or so.

Thanks, Simon —

For some reason, I can only view your first photo of six.

Might be on my end or your end — can't tell...

But thank you for this technique!

You inspired me to take a look at my bearing removal system...

These hammers have now been "calibrated" very carefully into a precise and graduated group.

😁😁😁

Best Always,

Fred
