Title: Tld 30 II spd - hard to reel
Post by: Vbnolefisher on May 08, 2013, 04:28:56 AM
I have two tld30II that recently have become hard to reel. In free spool the reel reels fine but as you increase the drag it progressively gets harder and harder to reel. I did follow the service schematic and stripped and cleaned the entire reel then regreased and re-assembled but no luck.  Any ideas of what the problem might be would be great. Thanks in advance!!

First how much drag pressure do you have the reels set at in strike position? If the drag adjustment knob is too tight on any lever drag reel you will get side load and the handle will get hard to turn.

Not very much drag at all. Even at just 5lbs of drag the handle is very hard to turn!!!

Should I replace the main side plate bearing?  If so which part number?

G'day VB,
The main right-side bearing is part #TT-200 (7x17x5 I believe).
Good luck, Justin
Schematic here, should you need it: http://www.nutterrodandreel.com/pdf/Shimano/1992/tld%202-speed%2030.PDF (http://www.nutterrodandreel.com/pdf/Shimano/1992/tld%202-speed%2030.PDF)

I would like to add that I have had some light corrosion on the main drive shaft (the one the handle mounts on).  Light sanding and a wire brush plus some grease smoothed mine right out.
