Title: Penn Fenwick rod
Post by: Donnyboat on March 16, 2019, 10:50:01 PM
Just brought two full roller rods, a Fenwick full roller rod by Fenwick Australia, 24Kg- 640 IGFA 50Lb, Fen glass, is this model as good as the American rods.

Also a Kilwell rod made in New Zealand, it has kilwell international, 205M ,6ft 8", 24Kg full roller rod, can anyone give me any info on both of these rod, I paid AU $35.00 for each of them. cheers Don. They are both in good condition.

Donny the Fenwick is no different than the ones sold in the US. That Fenglass model 640 was only made for a year or two before Fenwick dropped those model numbers. Im guessing if it has a serial number it starts with the letter S.

Thanks for your quick reply Chris, it does not have a serial number on it, I know its hard to tell without photos, but would you have any idea of the value, it is not in bad condition, the roller guides have a little patarna on them, but should clean up okay, its not as bad as the St crois Kona, that I restored. cheers Don.

Donny they are nice rods but dont hold a ton of value. I think you did great at $35AU
I believe they normally trade for $50-$75US, with mint examples hovering around $100

Got a photo of the Kilwell? And is it definitely an NZ one? They have a bunch of their rods made in ?china?, whereas the NZ ones are specifically "Kilwell NZ".

If it's an NZ one then you stole it for $35.

High everyone, this is the info I received from Jeff Tuavera of Kilwell- It looks like the international game rod brand, started in the early 80`s, the blue & red bindings show that it was F Glass, blank that the rod was constructed on, if it had have been brown & orange, it would have been S Glass, model was about 1984 or 5, and retailed for $ NZ 390.00todays international 24Kg rod, with detachable aluminium but is $NZ1000.00. sorry there is none of the original sticker available. I will get some photos to wayne soon, they were taken before I washed the rod, cheers Don, have`nt done any resurch on the Penn fenwick yet.

Ive actually never heard of a Penn Fenwick rod. The model 640 50lb class rod you mentioned in the original post is a Fenwick model number designation that was discontinued in 1979.
The 24KG rated Fenglass rod that was added in 1983 is a one piece rod

Donny it looks good. The white blank makes me think it could be a 1979 model but to be so it should have a serial number below the Fenwick logo starting with S or T. My Fenwick history book states that no rods were serial numbered after 1981. The 640 model also throws me off. Maybe something different about the Fenwick AU rods.
Anyway good score bro.

You've got a good eye for bargain priced tackle Don - I thought it might have been luck with the first few purchases you have shared, but after a dozen or so good deals I'm thinking luck might not be playing a big part at at all - thanks for showing us there are still some bargains out there.
Mike

Yes Chris, Wayne & Mike, thanks for all your follow up, very good off you all, Chris I cant see any serial numbers, but I will try to take some clearer photos of the sticker, also there is another sticker that has Fenglass on it, Mike you have to have the time to find the bargains, I use Gumtree & Gumtree Australia, & I check 5 or 6 times a day, looking for what is there, yesterday I brought, all the following on the one deal, 1 Alvey reel, also an egg beater & an overhead reel plus a plactic box of lures, 5 rods, & several hooks swivels swivels, the bloke was asking AU $15.00, for the lot, as I was not sure when I would be able to pick them up, I told him I would pay $20.00, anyway my brother inlaw is living about 5 clicks away, so he picked them up for me, My wife has to go there this coming week, Pat will pick them up then, cheers Don.

Hello,

Thank you for taking time to contact us. We are always eager to hear from interested fishermen concerning the quality and performance of our products and value your comments and suggestions.
I am sorry but we do not keep up with the information or pricing of older equipment. There are some antique forums that may be able to help you and also EBay would give you a good idea of market value and they sometimes give history.
This web site has the greatest collection of information I have found so far on older equipment.

Thanks Wayne, very kind of you, it could help some of the members, Chris, I think I have found, maybe a serial number, between the Fenwick & the first runner, but it is hard to read, I will try to send you a photo of it, & if you can work it out, maybe you could then elaborate off it cheers Don.
