Title: outboard gear oil for reel lube?
Post by: ScottOz on June 03, 2017, 08:11:06 AM
Hi guys, just wondering how outboard gear oil would go as a reel oil?changed my outboard gear oil today and put penrite outboard gear oil in it.full synthetic 75/90w.I assume being marine gear oil it should have good corrosion inhibitors. Certainly looks very nice and if it was in a tiny bottle that cost 20$ and had a catchy name like Scott's Super Slick Speed Oil I would by it.Just curious.Bit thick for some applications but if speeds not a major concern may be ok.Scott

A bit heavy for most reels.

I would still try and source some TSI321 (or ReelX, CorrosionX) for spool and high speed bearings. Marine grease for low speed bearings.
