Title: Daiwa Saltist Question
Post by: handi2 on December 19, 2014, 12:59:20 AM
What is the purpose and the plastic toothed gear under the crosswind gear? Would this make the reel a little bit noisy if it wasn't right when replacing the main gear? I have 2 and one of them is a bit noisy and the other quiet.

Thanks

Scratching my head on this one but is it part of the back up antireverse?

Does it perhaps drive a backup AR?
DOH!  Must hit refresh before replying!
Is it gear noise or something else, thinking new main with worn pinion. Maybe play with sideplate shims on LHS, perhaps mesh with pinion is out?
Thats my limit on bright ideas at present.

The plastic gear is part of the oscillating gear pair and is more or less a spacer for the main oscillating gear. Have a  look at the right side main bearing and retainer (wire clip retainer) and if there is any play it will make an awful sound because the drive gear will be misaligned. Sometimes an extra shim or washer is needed to pack it out. If you have put a new drive gear in it could also be the pinion gear is worn. Usually when replacing a main gear the pinion needs to done as well because both wear together over time. One new gear and one old one don't usually mesh together as good as two old ones or two new ones. All the best, Dirk

Thank you. Just what I needed to know.

Got them sorted out. One is just older than the other and I checked 3 of the same reels. Same little noise. I like to get them as quiet as the Stradic reels.
