Here is a nice Ocean City 16/0 reel along with the box and carry, fighting or pull handle which ever you want to call it. In this case I say the box is much harder to come by than the reel !! Same goes with pull handle. I have seen many 616 OC reels but only a hand full of 616 boxes and out of that hand full only one or two were in good shape. Same goes with the 614 boxes but I have seen more of them in good shape than the 16/0 boxes. People probably re-purposed the boxes as they were a good rugged box. Anyway Enjoy !!!!
John Taylor
A beautiful and nearly impossible combo to duplicate, in unused condition yet, John!
Thanks for showing us...
Best, Fred
Thanks Fred ! Looks like I posted this in wrong place can someone move it to the OCEAN CITY section ?? Sorry
Wow, what a beauty and part of fishing history. Nice addition to what I assume is a wonderful collection.

Beautiful Reel!
I do find a Major Flaw with it though.
It is not in MY SHOWCASE :'(
Someone in your Family must have owned a Sporting Goods Store and all these Jewels you bring up were in the Basement in a Safe for 60 or seventy Years.
or you are just the Luckiest Scrounger I ever saw ;D
John, We have spoken many times however I never mentioned that I am your long lost son! I just look considerably older than I am due to to much fishing and way to many cigars! Truthfully,,, I am very jealous! A truly envious collection! Never stop the search!

Very, very, very nice. Never knew about the boxes. What era is that beauty from?
So, what's your collecting secret?
Thanks for posting, great pictures.

There are only two ways to get reels of this caliber —
Dumb luck (it is a low percentage game that some will try — and go through a lifetime still waiting for that pearl to drop out of a tree. And sometimes they do).
Or...one can gain a reputation for paying top dollar for the best examples of what they want, keeping in close contact with other collectors, keeping track of who has what because everything becomes for sale at some point, doing reciprocal favors for others, letting others know what you will pay good money for immediately — and what you want, beating the bushes for the little obscure details that might lend a clue to where these reels are, and not being afraid to pay way above what others may think the item is worth.
Another thing — once you start paying over top dollar for the very rare reels that you want in great condition — many more opportunities will come your way privately — not eBay, Craigslist, or yard sales — collector to collector — quiet, private, and where one's word is their bond. Plus good friendships and correspondence with other collectors.
And then a new higher price point is established — and the reel that you paid maybe double the going rate — is now worth more immediately. A new bar.
I am confident that John is in the latter category.
There is an old saying that the experienced, seasoned collectors use —
You can't pay too much for a perfect reel — or too little for a rough one...
Just my opinion.
Best, Fred

It is easy to make a small fortune in the reel repair game — just start with a large one!

Buy High and Sell Low
You have to do a Boat Load of Volume to make any Money though.
Beautiful reel John. I know 16/0 OC's show up from time to time. The box is amazing also, but the Fighting Handle is just an impossible accessory. I believe the only other 16/0 I have seen is on your 16/0 cradle reel. I have one on a 12/0 that I doubt I will ever part with. OC never put them on any reel, they were optional items, so they are few and far between. Great find!!
