I finally am getting ready for the Albacore season, and have a couple of Pro Gear Wahoo Specials, Model PG461. It's essentially an improved and narrow 4/0 reel. Thinking that it will be very close to a Penn 113H, I proceeded without even pulling the schematics until I begun.

Here are the schematics:
http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/attachments/pro-gear/203152d1275191856-pro-gear-reel-schematics-pdf-format-pro-gear-pg461.pdf
I removed the handle lock screw (31)
Then remove the handle screw (30) which is actually a nut, with an 11 mm socket.
Pulled the handle screw retainer (30A) and handle (29). Talking about tight tolerances. Boy was it snug.
Remove the tension washer (40) and the star (28).
Note the drag spring washers in ( ) configuration [not indicated in the schematics].
Remove the endcap (3) from frame (1).
Removed the bridge plate (14).
And look what I find? Double dogs. Wow, cool. Now I pull the schematics.
I took the dog ratchet (15D) and placed it back on bridge shaft (14A) to check it out.
And investigate the dog assembly (15, 15A, 15B, 15C, 16)
Okay, here we go. Let the maintenance begin.
Lube the dog assembly with CorrosionX HD and spread grease and CorrosionX HD on bridge plate. Apply blue grease to dog rachet and place on bridge shaft.
Let's look at the drag washers. One of the reels was provided with carbon drag washers and the other was provided with stuff with metal flakes. So I got some drag washers with a slightly larger OD and grinded them down a bit. The pic shows the washers all lined up for comparision.
The other reel was provided with 4 greased drags with the same ID and OD as the metal speckled drag washers.
Well, if you notice, the replacement drag washers' inner diameter is much larger than was provided with the reel. This should not be a problem, so I proceeded to grease the drags with Cal's Universal Grease.
and put the drag assembly back to gether in the main gear.
Well, I ran into a problem with the ID of the last carbon drag washer because the last metal washer is keyed and not eared. So the last carbon drag was swapped with one from the other reel because it has a smaller ID. Sorry, no pic. I forgot to take a pic. Relieved that I found a solutions.
Greased the bridge shaft
(http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/ae348/hawaiiansurfinboy/Pro%20Gear%20Wahoo%20Special/IMG_4626.jpg)
Slide on drag spacer and grease
(http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/ae348/hawaiiansurfinboy/Pro%20Gear%20Wahoo%20Special/IMG_4627.jpg)
Remove drag sleeve bearing by removing the bearing retainer. Remove bearing shields, clean with carb cleaner and forced air, and pack with grease mixed with CorrosionX.
Clean and regrease pinion gear yolk assembly and clean the inside of the pinion gear with a q-tip and added a drop of CorrosionX.
Pull bearings in right bearing cap (6), left bearing cap (5), and shaft bearing (not in schematics)
Attempted to pull shields with little success.
Went to Alan Tani's house for advice and 2 bearing need to be cut to remove the shields
(http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/ae348/hawaiiansurfinboy/Pro%20Gear%20Wahoo%20Special/IMG00603.jpg)
All bearings were cleaned with brake cleaner and forced air, then went swimming in TSI301.
Install right bearing and reinstall bridge plate and screw down (4 screws)
Now the frame. Remove left bearing cap (5), grease threads and reinstall

Frame
(http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/ae348/hawaiiansurfinboy/Pro%20Gear%20Wahoo%20Special/IMG_4558.jpg)
Disassemble clicker assembly, clean and grease and reassemble.
Grease the spool
(http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/ae348/hawaiiansurfinboy/Pro%20Gear%20Wahoo%20Special/IMG_4565.jpg)
Install left bearing, spool in frame and reassenble
(http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/ae348/hawaiiansurfinboy/Pro%20Gear%20Wahoo%20Special/IMG_4630.jpg)
Reinstall drag spring washers configured ( ) and reverse how it was taken apart, greasing each part as it is reassembled.
Result, free spool from went from 20 seconds to 40 plus seconds without line. Now, my concerns when I do get line on is the professional overruns.
Nice work, Bryan and a nice looking reel. Bet you can't wait to hear it screaming with a big fish on the other end ;D
Cheers, T
good stuff
Thanks. I forgot to take pict regarding greasing screws, the reel seat,... I'll try to remember for my next posting.
That is a pretty sharp looking reel. Where do you get them? I looked on their site and it is kinda sketchy.
In short, Pro Gear is no longer in business, but the designer and owner is still around and only sell reels and parts on eBay. http://shop.ebay.com/socalfishingtackle/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p4340
I found mine at a fishing store in SoCal (new old stock).
There are still a few around, but you will mostly find these reels used on Craigslist or eBay. (http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/spo/1936175090.html or http://sporting-goods.shop.ebay.com/Outdoor-Sports-/159043/i.html?_nkw=pro+gear+reel&_catref=1&_fln=1&_npmv=3&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282)
Many of the reel parts will interchange with Penn reels, depending on model.
I think CharkBait had a 251 (which is essentially a spectra capable jig master) in the store.
nice job, Bryan...thanks for the link!
Looks like a brilliant reel, how well do they cast and what is the line capacity on this model? Pity they don't get made anymore
these things are tanks. more than that, they are hypnotizing. you should see bryan when he starts talking about these reels. he gets that glazed look in his eyes, that wide-eyed stare, starts drooling a little and gets a little bit of a tremor. that's what these reels do to you. they really are gorgeous. ;D
Darn pity they never made it to our side of the Atlantic, seems to be the bomb proof reel that you can stand in the waves with all day and put the brakes on a big shark and be able to belt out a loooong cast with a 14ft rod, like a Shimano 20/40 (or a modified Torium) but with better line capacity and stronger?
I'll look up the specs. I have them saved electronically, somewhere, and will post.
You may find some of these reels in Florida. That is where I saw some of these reels.
461 line capacity is 300yds 50# mono, 5:1 gear ratio.
The spacing between the spool and frame, you don't need to worry about spectra getting caught.
Great Job on the tutorial! I was, however, a bit surprised to see you mixing greases. I was under the impression from Alan's tutorials/postings that it's not wise to mix lubricants. Can someone clue me in on mixing lubes (Keep it clean boys;) That reel is sweet...and obviously maintained beautifully! Thanks
Dom
Triple guard is a thick and sticky grease. I mix CorrosionX and to help loosed the thickness up a little. According to my email conversations JD Hill, Distributer of CorrosionX, he indicated that I will be pleased with the results of fortifying my grease with CorrosionX. He did indicate that the mixture should be tested combination and evalauted to determine which grease to use and what ratio to blend to achieve optimum results. So far, it's on several of my past reels for 3 years now with no noticiable negative effects.

Thanks Bryan, I might just start trawling the net for a good second hand 461, it's just a pity that most 2nd hand sellers on ebay don't ship internationally, but I can always make a plan, presume it is a stardrag model? You don't perhaps have the schematic and spec sheet for the 461? Amazing tolerances re spectra not catching between spool and frame. I will be using it with spectra at the bottom and mono on top
Thanks for clearing up the lube situation... I'm gonna give it a go on the next reel I crack open. Thanks
Dom
This was the drag washer under the main gear of my Wahoo special which as far as I know had never been opened, it looks like some sort of fiber weave impregnated with resin and baked, very shiny surface, almost reminds me of circuit board material. Anyone ever see one of these in their Pro Gear? I replaced with a carbon fiber one that was under the main gear in a 551, it was thicker and I think I might have to put something thinner in as the drag ramps up too quick.
That original washer was so shiny it must have had very low friction, with that setup the 461 would have less drag than the 551. With identical configs I think they are capable of identical drags, though 551 have slightly more surface area so...? My scale broke I still need to get one for some tests.
yeah, seen those before. i just throw them away and install a carbon fiber drag washer.

It will be fine. Once you set the drag, you normally should not not fiddle with it anyway.
I had the same washer on my WS and like Alan said, I just pitched it and replaced it with a carbon fiber.

David
Hi, Bryan;
When you replaced the drag washers to carbon fiber, did you double up on one of the washers or did you also add an extra metal washer to go with the extra carbon fiber? There's 3 of the original washers and 4 of the carbon fiber. Just Curious.
Regards,
David
Hi David,
Sorry, I missed your posting. I believe I had to double up on one of the washers, but I cannot remember. I was doing 2 reels at a time. Also, an update, one of the washers, the one on the top, was replaced with one with a smaller ID. I am trying to find the specs on the washer, but I just could not. I'll have to find one so that I don't have to open up the Wahoo Special to measure it.
Bryan
Is this the same company who made the Oceanus lever drag reel? and if so, were they ever related (manufacturer) to Jigging Master reels? Any info greatly appreciated.
Basto
Yes, it is the same company as the one that makes the Oceanus reels.
I'm no expert, but I believe that PG got together with JM to exhange ideas, and PG was allowed to copy the handle design. Likewise, I believe that JM borrowed some ideas from PG and incorporated it into their reels. PGs are definietly made here in USA. JM is maid in Asia. Separate companies, but open to sharing ideas.
Very interesting. Yes, I can see a lot of similarities with the Oceanus and the JM reels. Thanks for your reply Bryan.
JM reels have a double drag system that PG cannot implement because Accurate has a patent here in the US. I wonder if I find the same sized JM reel, I could make a dual drag Oceanus? Hmmm.
The more I see of these reels, the more they remind me of the first PENN TORQUE reels. I have a 200 and it also has been described as too heavy, but weight often goes with strength.
Bryan:
DUDE, you got a jacked up! camera!
Nice work! Great detail!
Regards, Reid
Hey Bryan,
I know this is an old thread, but I have a question. How (with what tool) and where do you cut the bearing if necessary?
Thanks
Dom
We used a dremel to cut the outer race with a thin cutting blade, cut at 1/3 or 1/4 positions if you cannot get the clip out. Now, I would probably use my pics.
thanks for the info, Bryan!
Dom
HEY BRYAN,
IN REVIEWING THIS TUTORIAL (GOOD JOB BTW), I NOTICED WHAT SEEMS TO BE STAINLESS STEEL DOGS. WOULD YOU KNOW IF THEY ARE THE SAME SIZE AS THE PENN 4/O. IF SO, THEN I MAY BE ABLE TO PURCHASE SOME FROM PROGERAR @EBAY TO ADD DOUBLE DOGS FOR THE 4/0 TANK MOD.
LEO
Leo, they are not the same size as Penn's 4/0. Contact Keta by Messaging him. He just cut a bunch of SS dogs for Penn's 4/0 and 6/0 reels.
Thanx Bryan,
I recently recieved some from Lee a couple of days ago.
Leo
Hey Bryan, with all the recent talk about the PG282, it's got me thinking...
The last time I had mine apart it looked like it might be possible to add a second dog.
What do you reckon?
If so, do you happen to know where I might get the parts?
Cheers mate, Justin
Contact Randy Kao at RandyHKao@aol.com. If not him, then Ken's Custom Reel in Oceanside, CA.
Thanks Bryan - much appreciated.
Any chance of getting the photos back?
Photos are back. Maybe a problem with Photobucket. Try again.
Hello Bryan,
I pulled down my Wahoo Special and found there were no spring washers under the drag star. I guess I'll have to find some to fit. I did however change the drag set. First I used a Penn 6-309 under the main gear. It was a perfect fit. I also used the same under the top domed metal washer. The first try was Penn's 116 HT-100 washers that were a hair too large. After a quick trim they fit perfect. That's probably whst you used.

I then cut a set out of Carbontex 1mm sheet and they too worked fine.

Steve, you will not be disappointed. They are great reels.
2 years later and the PG461 has landed cod, salmon, dorado, skippies, bonita, tuna and yellowtail without a flaw. nothing huge but i liked the reel enough to pick up a 2nd one. now i need a damn wahoo!! thanks again for the great write up. time for this reel to take a service break. - steve chung
