Title: Tile's reel pictures
Post by: Tile on May 06, 2012, 08:20:19 PM
After seeing the impressive number of pictures of reels I decided to contribute.
The first one is an Abu Garcia AG Seven (the budget version of the 7000i series), the second one is the Banax OW 7300 (the one in the tutorial and now sporting carbonfiber washers lubricated with Cal's grease - thanks to Alan) and the third one is a Penn 220 GTO (this one has carbonfiber washers and got a treatment of Cal's grease on them).

The reels mounted on the rods. The blue handled ones costed me 10$ a piece from a local tackle store and the black handled one I got it from an angler in Moldova in new condition and costed me 20$.

Very nice Tile, thanks for showing them. They look brand new, are you using them?

Like I already said earlier, this is great and only getting better.
Thanks Alan, for such a great idea.
C'mon guys, show some pictures, even if it's only one reel.

hi tile
do you fish freshwater with em?(brown line)
Title: Re: Reel pictures
Post by: Tile on May 07, 2012, 06:26:11 AM
They are almost brand new and are intended for freshwater usage. Around here we have some big wels catfish in the Danube and her tributaries and big carp specimens mostly in privately owned lakes.

Some anglers especially carp anglers really shell out lots of cash for their gear. I decided to go with value oriented tackle that really lasts and most important gets the job done.

I like the color combination of the rod you got in Moldova.

Thanks  :) . The 2,7m and 3m solid fiberglass rods are the standard for Danube fishing because they are affordable, well made and can take a lot of punishment, spew it right back and then some.

Now for the spinners. The larger ones are used for coarse fishing (crucian, bream and small carp) and lure fishing for pike, zander and perch (the large black and silver reel in particular). The small one is used for small river fishing (barbel, chub and other native species)

Title: Re: Reel pictures
Post by: Tile on May 11, 2012, 07:01:56 PM
The same spinners mounted on their rods. The rod on the top is a Berkley which had a lot of problems due to misuse before being repaired and put back in working order more than 10 years ago. The center one is in my property for 15 years and has done its job on the Teleajen river catching lots of barbel. The 2-piece rod is designed for coarse fishing but it will serve as my primary lure fishing rod. It has received a solid carbonfiber tip called a blector on the inside of its tip, making the tip area stronger and less prone to breakage.

The reel in the picture is a Penn International 80SW and is not mine. The picture is at a fishing tackle fair. I wouldn't own one because is way overkill for the wels catfish.

1 reel missing in the front row of the middle pic, forgot one of my 4501CS at my parent's cabin.

Didn't know whether to post here or in the Penn forum but for those of you with Internationals and wanted a topless frame, there is some good news. It seems that Tiburon must have made a batch of frames and they have them in stock.

These were hard to find for quite some time. I just converted my Cal'd 50S and my Cofe'd 30S to "topless". Still need to find some shorter screws for the 50 where the lugs are but if you already have the reels(and still love your Penns) and don't want to spend the money converting to Makairas this is an available option.

Title: Re: Reel pictures
Post by: Tile on May 23, 2012, 07:53:31 PM
I would file the screws shorter on the 50S. A file, 2 pieces of wood and a bench vise will help you file them to the required length.
Title: Re: Reel pictures
Post by: conchydong on May 24, 2012, 06:54:50 PM

Thanks Tile.
Filing is surely plan B. I will check my local tackle shop that has a lot of Penn Parts first to see if I can find some shorter torx head screws.
BTW I realize I screwed up and posted on your thread and not a general reel pictures thread. Must have had a brain fart. Hopefully a Moderator can move it to the appropriate place.

I got myself a Banax Tova baitcasting reel for free because the previous owner complained about an antireverse problem. Once the reel arrived I opened her up and checked the antireverse bearing and found that it was in perfect condition. The main problem was posed by the fiber drag washers which accounted to the low drag range on this reel. The other problem was a busted handle lock screw. The reel received carbonfiber washers and Cal's grease and the problem screw was replaced and I managed to get a rod for it  :).

Title: Re: Reel pictures
Post by: Tile on March 28, 2013, 06:42:07 PM
I repaired a solid fiberglass rod that was laying around due to a broken silicon carbide guide insert and decided that it would need a reel. I purchased a low end multiplier named Lineaeffe JD 300. The reel got a set of carbon fiber drag washers assorted with Cal's grease,  better stand screws, strengthened yoke posts and the play in the levelwind was substantially reduced.

Looks like a nic little setup
Title: Re: Reel pictures
Post by: Tile on March 28, 2013, 07:11:49 PM
Thanks. For a secondary combo I wanted a reel that wouldn't break the bank and still have potential for upgrades and improvements.

I tested the reel's max drag in an open stand and I got a shade under 5 lbs - not bad for a 30$ reel. Also the carbon fiber washer upgrade radically transforms any reel that is fortunate to have it done.

The plastic stoppers are there with a meaning - to prevent the line from coming out of sync with the levelwind.

hi tile,  can you run through the method you used  pls
Title: Re: Reel pictures
Post by: Tile on April 02, 2013, 10:10:05 PM
The painting process is very simple. At first I stripped all the parts from the sideplates, sanded the external surfaces with 1000 grit sandpaper, degreased them and started painting. The paint is applied in small strokes taking care to get it in all the crevices and screw holes. I allowed 10-15 minutes between the layers and touched it up where necessary. After one hour I assembled the parts that are attached to them and reassembled the reel.
The paint used is a quick drying german made spray paint.

I'm new to the forum! Alan schooled me on the Carbontex drag and anti reverse upgrade on my Toriums and when I ordered(http://) my drags and saw the jumbo Tbar I had to have them!(http://i1153.photobucket.com/albums/p509/dolphinkiller/64E7521D-3102-4B8B-8C10-C678A4593A53-4336-0000040A2EECCC95.jpg)

The graphite bodied reels are easy to paint. Instead the metal bodied ones should be painted by a professional for best results.
Title: Re: Reel pictures
Post by: Bryan Young on April 03, 2013, 08:29:47 PM
To me, the biggest issue would be the degreasing process.  if you don't remove all of the grease and oils, the paint comes out like your hand and feet after it's been soaking in water for 1 hour or more.

The Lineaefe reel will be given away to one of my relatives and I got a Fladen Maxximus 777NB to take its place. This reel is 98% carbon copy of the older Abu 7000 series.

Yes mate, the three on the left are all Alvey's. The one on the top left is a 6" light surf reel, it doesn't have a drag, just a fiber friction washer under the star that you can use to apply pressure to the spool if the rod is left set and for storage. The yellow Alvey is a 650E1 which does have a drag system. The handles are attached to the spool so when line is going out you have to get your hands out of the way real quick or you will get a wrap across the knuckles but it does have an anti-reverse system. With Alvey's most of the drag is applied with the palm of your hand on the spool, no Cal's required.

Purchased a used Everol 6/0 for $227.50 + shipping off ebay. Even though I was thinking of buying one, particularly brand new, this one was a spur of the moment decision. Beautiful reel. It has a red drag plate, so made in the 70s? Appears to be in pretty good condition and looks better in person than in photos, so I'm pleasantly surprised about that  :). I noticed there is some grease under the reel seat, the Alan Tani way. I haven't took it apart yet, so will have pictures later. Kinda nervous about this one, though, as it is my first lever drag, and I saw redsetta's tutorial, and it is way more complicated than what I'm used to. The Shimano spinners that I took apart look like a piece of cake in comparison. I'm going to take my time on this.

I also got hold of my first leverdrag reel: An unused Fladen Maxximus 6/0. The original fiber drag washer was replaced with a carbontex one, the cam profile was altered to be more progressive and also the reel got 2 extra bearings for the handle shaft. The other one is the modified Chieftain.
