Title: Halibut fishing with GSTOURS (Gary) in Alaska Aug. 1-8, 2017
Post by: El Pescador on August 12, 2017, 03:28:48 PM
How would the conversation go with you and your wife, girl friend or significant other of many years?????   When the conversation goes something like this...

Sweetheart, I've invited 2 fishing guys to come and live with us for a week, I met them online, don't know their real names, have not seen their photos, but are coming for a week, living with us, and want dinner at 7pm!!!  I know my wife and I would be having words.

But that is what happened last week for Dominick and me.  Actually, it was booked for Alan & Dom, but with Alan's current medical treatment, they called in for Plan B - ME!!!

Here is some of the food swag we brought up in our coolers, This was in my cooler, Dominick brought up 49 lbs. of fresh fruit & vegetables.

Yes, I hand carried a BLACK SEEDED Water melon for Mary Jo -

Landed in Juneau, AK with a 4 hr. delay
(http://alantani.com/gallery/20/7588_12_08_17_7_54_28_20841413.jpeg)

Skys were full of helicopters taking tourists to the glacier close by
(http://alantani.com/gallery/20/7588_12_08_17_7_54_50_208431146.jpeg)

with questionable wireless coverage, as long as I have clear skys, my inReach GPS allows me to text to my hearts content.

And here we are in Gustavus, AK with Gary (aka: gstours on our site) -
(http://alantani.com/gallery/20/7588_12_08_17_7_55_13_208441837.jpeg)

Here is the World's smallest Baggage Claim area - only in Gustavus, AK!!!

Heading to Gary's home - he and Dominick are already making plans for fishing
(http://alantani.com/gallery/20/7588_12_08_17_7_55_36_20846439.jpeg)

BUT first, need to stop by the local liquor store for some items.  This store is only open between 4-6 pm.
And why are there only fishing vans in front???

Nice selection of about anything you would want.

And a really nice selection of wines - And for those of you who have met me, you know I'm a bit of a wine snob!  That's right, I like only two kinds of wine...  OPEN and IN MY HAND!!!!!!

And here we arrive at Gary & Mary Jo's home - carved out of the Alaska Wilderness 20 years ago.

And this is where Dommie, that's what Gary liked to call Dominick!!  and I stayed.

Dominick paying Omage to the Red Cooler!!!  This cooler had the MOJO - as you will see.

You've seen it before but here is the fish cutting station - Dominick and I came home with 120 lbs. of halibut.

Here is Gary and the TANK for the first time.

Alright, Gary, I asked you for your permission to post photos of your work area and gave me that privilege, so here you go - Gary's fishing work area.

Next Day, putting the Tank on Gary's favorite Halibut rod, a Witch Doctor 30-80 lbs. rod - and it too worked its charm.

Gary working on the handle side of the TANK, and when I saw what he was using for a wrench, I grabbed my iPhone, and texted Alan to send Gary 4 wrenches and bill me for the cost.  DONE!!!

My wife, Jennifer, always tucks in my baggage a note for the trip, God love this woman!!!

isn't life grand,  what a beautiful story of three guys getting together to go fishing, and gary's wife for welcoming them, this site has brought so many people together to share the same passion we all have.  we all could have a ball in gary's work shop, filled with alot of goodies, i'm just surprised they didn't try to hijack the red cooler,  the  ''  butt  ''  killer.  thanks again for a great story and beautiful pictures.   harryk

What a FANTASTIC note your sweetheart wrote you, Wayne.  Indeed, there would be a rod shortage...and a healthy ocean planet to live on... and a photo hosting site with unlimited gigabytes for all things angling....wait a minute! ...gotta go copywite that Slogan for my next web photo hosting site.

All Things Angling@fishfotos.com....done.

I love southeast Alaska and am counting the days until I get back up there...less than a month.

Anyway, I am thinking this must be the introductory teaser page....right?

The arrival and get settled in page....right?

The FISHING PAGE is coming up next...RIGHT?

Great pics so far ...keep 'em coming.

BTW...did you notice the air difference on your first breath outside?

I always do even at the airport in Ketchikan.

Breathe in big.....let out breath....aaaahhhhh.....I'm home..... ;D

Good onya with the goodies for Gary and Wife!

I always bring goodies to my Alaska lodge and after years of this gift and that...I panicked with the lack of gift inspiration and bought coffee for all. Several local roasts.

One of the  owner's 5 daughters took one look in the bag, gave me a million dollar smile and said" ya done good!"

This year it's looking like Park City Roast X4.

Bring on more story and pics! Let's see that Tank in action?...Alaska Style!

Edit: typo fixed..two owners ( husband and wife) ...5 daughters.

If you've followed the "Red Mojo Cooler" at all then disregard this .

It's the bait cooler and has the baddest fish catching mojo on the planet.

Ain't no Alaska fish gonna fit in that cooler. They go under the floor in the boat deck. ;D

I'm afraid Wayne or more likely Dominick or together have concocted a scheme to secure said cooler from Gary at the end of the day....or maybe at the end of a fine Zin.

But not really....just kidding.

You Kids ready for more photos???  Back from Sacramento and my nephew and fiance are now Mr. & Mrs.!  We wished them a lifetime to love, honor & cherish each other.

But back to our business at hand...

Here is Gary, ready to head out for the day but wants to check his garden to see what we will enjoy with our dinner.

Got the Red Cooler packed with halibut bait.

The drive from Gary's home to the boat dock is 3 miles of this, then a right turn and 3 more miles of the same view. TALL Timber.

At the boat dock, and a small gift from my wife for Dommie & Gary!  A boat towel.

At the dock is this yacht - NICE Looks to be neighbors from San Francisco.

Gary has to take a dingy from the dock to his boat, get on board, then motor back to the dock to pick us up.

AND... that is why it is called the MAIKO!

Talking about where to fish for the day.

Gary uses more bait on a single drop than we do all day fishing Halibut in the SF Bay Area.

And thar she blows.... THE TANK.

The Tank on the first drop of the day in 180 feet of icy waters.

The technique here is to drop your bait with 48 oz. of lead to the bottom, then begin to pull up and drop again to feel for the bottom, depending on the current, it takes a few ups and  drops before you have a solid feel of the bottom.  If you are NOT on the bottom, you get NO FISH.

I grab the tank and winch up the first fish of the day.

A nice start for the day.

You can see what does down the halibut gullet will not be coming out.  IT's nasty down there.

Here is Gary's bait arsenal:  Salmon heads, salmon belly strips, herring, roe, a syringe of smelly fish liquid.

Dominick too gets fish on the tank.

Back to the boat, Gary has the cabin all organized as he needs it.

And a small oil burning stove to heat the cabin and some sausages for lunch.

And a small stove to heat water for Dominick's requests for a fresh cup of hot coffee.

The Tank on constant patrol for big halibut.

Dominick contemplating a change in fishing ideas.

Done with the first day, cleaning up the boat before mooring it to the buoy and heading back in the dingy.

WE have fish to clean.

Gary shows us his filet methods, and then we go to work, TRYING to do the same.

We made sure to cut out the cheeks and Dominick and I will enjoy them with scrambled eggs some weekend am.

Gary made this cedar table to hold the fish & keep them dry & clean.

Time to remove the skin.

Vac Seal, freeze and repeat many times this day.

Enjoy this post, you have lots more to see.

You're the man, when it comes to telling a story and posting pics, maybe Alan could promote you to Sensei status ;)...good job!

Gary lives in Paradise, it's really beautiful up there.

And I am in the very last stages of planning my 21st trip to Alaska.

One trip was to the very waters where Dominick was fishing...with Pleasant Island in view...and all around Icy Straits in general for a solid week. 14 hours plus a day of fishing and being on the water.

The other 20 trips have been to Prince of Wales Island, my home away from home.

Great play by play keep 'em coming!

Do it!

My first AK was in Sept. 2000....now 20 trips are under my belt and the only bucket list fishing trip is the one in my avatar pic. Alligator Gar down in Texas. That was 6 years back now. Time flies...get that bucket list going while you're young enough to.

Get there sooner than later, you might enjoy the trip & then want to go more times in the future.

Fish Transport: In Alaska it is legal to clean halibut while on the water but you must keep the four filets whole and with skin on. Once you are off the water, you can remove the skin, cutup the filets, and vacuum pack. King and coho salmon, rockfish and ling cod can be gutted and gilled on the water but must be kept whole until arriving at your home port. Pink and chum salmon can be cut up and used for bait while on the water.

You Kids ready for another round???  Here we go :o

The TANK ready for the day's fishing.

We also used a ProReel Yellowtail Special - Very smooth drag as well.  IT looked to be a bit narrower than a Narrow Penn 4/0 - can anyone confirm that???

Gary ONLY uses narrowed Penn 4/0 for his fishing needs - Nothing bigger or smaller.

Gary also makes his own reel crank handles. HE MADE THEM!!!    I can barely use a 2 part epoxy successfully!!!!

The man is just an excellent welder - For sure.

His handle length is about 4" to 4.25" center to center.

How about some more photos of the TANK????

The red handle, there is NO WAY to describe the depth and translucence. Just a plain beautiful handle.

Here is Gary on the TANK.

Again, more of the bait ready for use.

I should have taken notes!   Gary was always providing insight and experience to us.

AND then it happened, Dom's rod loaded up, he pulled the rod out of the holder, and was slammed downward against the rail, when the fish felt the line tighten.  BIG FISH.  Dom fought it for a short time, it went around the motor, Gary helped him getting past the screw, but no luck, line went limp.  Fish gone.  BUT then, my rod loaded up, and same experience, when the fish felt the line pressure, it took off on a LONG minute run, and slammed my rod against the rail. I just laid atop the rod trying to not have it go overboard.  Smooth drag, but lots of drag pressure.

15 minute battle, 3 times at the boat before we could take this photo!!!

75 inches long, estimated weight - 225 lbs.  An #### kicker for sure.

We all agreed to ONLY keep fish smaller than 70 lbs. - and today we caught and kept 5 fish.  This one day was enough for Dom and I to take home all the fish we could carry in ice chests.

We are filling up with BUTTS!   Gary loves to sing the song, "I love BIG BUTTS!!!!"

Gary and Dom doing what we all love to do.

AND what a weather day it was!  Almost got a sun burn in SE Alaska!!!  Keta and Steve-O is that normal 8)

Sunburn in Alaska?   Easy! Especially on the water. I got raccoon eyes when I was up there in the Icy Straits

And what lake was that you were fishing on again?

Gary for sure knows his home waters.

Fabulous outing! guys!

My duffel bag is packed and I've still got a month to go!

Talk about chompin at the bit....and this thread is killing me...in a good way. ;D

Last hour before dinner of my first day there in June, 2011, we decide to reel up and my boat partner says I'm stuck on the bottom. Pull harder I says .

Big mistake. The 150# flattie on the other end didn't appreciate that one bit.

We got the same treatment as you guys did...a BIG smack down onto the rail and hold on for dear life.

20 minutes and several killer runs later there's big 'but in da boat.

The fish was shared with all at the lodge... 74#'s of halibut steaks all around.

Great report!!

Man I love seeing my old Yellowtail Special kickin' butts!

I believe the ProGear IS a bit narrower than the Penn version with the kit by about 3/16th's.

Obvious that with Gary's mods it can handle the job.

Thanks for keeping only the small ones!! All halibut over about 60 pounds are spawning females. And, while OK to eat, the larges ones aren't nearly as good as the small ones. Big ones are more wormy too...

All right,  ;)   Kids, you are for the BIG SHOW???

Third and final day of fishing when the rod next to Gary LOADS up BIG TIME,

So much, getting the rod out of the rod holder was difficult, to say the least, but Gary is strong, and when he put the rod end against his craw, he says, "We GOT something here" and then the rod was slammed down against the rail.  FIGHT ON!!!

Gary fights the fish for several minutes, Dom is getting on his fighting belt, I pulled out both camera for what will be the BIG SHOW on this trip!!!

Check out Dom's face expression - FULL GRIT!!!

Our fish decides to head around the boat stern, Gary runs into the wheel house and raises the motor and screw out of the water.

Dom then hands the rod off to me, I clear the back of the boat, and we start pulling.  I must say, I've NEVER pulled harder than any other fish!  I often say, "Fish Hard, PULL HARDER!"  Well, I did, and made sounds that I don't want repeated!!!

Pulling harder than ever, I locked my knees into the gunnels, put both hands on the top rod grips, and dropped my butt to help raise the rod, gaining maybe 6'' to a foot on each pull, then grab the red reel handle and TRY to put the excess back onto the TANK.  Doing this I don't know how long the fight lasted, but then we see color, FISH near the surface!

BTW, the wider paddles on the star drag made a BIG difference in comfort when spinning down the drag to almost bottom end.
Really like this style of star drags.

Here is a still shot off a GoPro video - Gary and Mary Jo are experts on using the GoPro, and the cutting & editing of vids.  Both are really good.

Gary used a 6' 3" rope hook as a measuring stick along side the big fish.  Dom was handling the rod, keeping this fish on the surface and along side the boat.

When Gary yelled NOW, I estimated the extra length beyond the rope hook to determine the final length of this HUGE Halibut,

I thought it was 6" - 8" longer, but when I hold our my hand, and extend all fingers to the max, the distance between my thumb and little finger is 9".  So, the fish could have been 9" longer, and each inch is an extra 20 lbs.

We thought the final estimated length was 84" (Seven Feet long) but it could have been 85" too.  Lenght is how they estimate the weight of the fish:  Check out this website:  http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/halibutcharts.htm

We all agreed it was between 325 - 350 lbs.!!!!!

Either way, and HUGE fish and an #### kicker for a fight.

It all starts with an 18/0 Circle Hook

Then a 10/0 J-Hook for the trailer. Gary has a special knot he uses to attach the nylon cord to the 10/0 and to the 18/0 - Ask him when you see him next!

He also uses this trimmer cord in place of 300 lbs. mono, it lasts longer and at a lower price. GO GARY!

Done for the day, and ONLY speaking for me, I was ONE tired Puppy!!!  Could not have asked for a better traveling partner and fishing buddy!!!  Thanks Dominick for the trip!!!!

That's it for now, more tomorrow.

Enjoy...

I am still in awe that this fishing trip, which has been offhandedly talked about for years, actually became a reality.  A testament to the AT Ohana.  Very gracious of the host.  Gary better be careful not to turn his place into a fishing lodge.  Once the success of this trip gets out, he may be inundated with fishing requests.

Here's a raw video of a Gary, Wayne, and Dominick butt.  This video was taken on our last day of fishing.  The wind came up and the current was screaming.  We were having a hard time keeping the bait presentation on the bottom.  Gary told us to bring our lines in for a move to a less windy spot.  Well Gary grabs his rod to give it a jerk to see if the weight is holding the bottom.  As he picked up the rod a giant butt (you'll see) swallowed the bait.  The boat was pitching pretty good by that time and we were all a little off balance.  I was watching Gary as he grabbed the rod out of the rod holder and started to lift a giant butt pulled him off balance and took him to the rail.  He started to reel to make sure the fish was hooked then he shouted for me to take the fish.  After "no you take it" back and forth he handed off the rod to me and went to get his GoPro.  The video starts with me working the fish.  It might look a little confusing at first because once Gary his GoPro going he starts putting on his Francis Coppola act.  :D  So you will see me answering him and moving for the camera.  In the mean time I had to keep the pressure on the fish.  Enjoy.  Dominick

Dominick, You are the Man!
I think that was the ultimate test of the Tank.
That is what Dreams are made of right there.
You brought him all the way to the surface, then game on!
Pissed off Giant Butt!
I bet you are still recovering from that Leviathan.
The Ultimate Butt, Tamed. ;)
Great job Wayne on the second run.
That was so cool.

Daron thanks for the compliments.  The experience was awesome.  When that fish took off and went under the boat it was ripping line through a tight drag.  The key is to let those big fish run and keep the pressure on.  Of course the butt man was right there making drag adjustments and giving instructions.  They don't call him the Butt Man for nothing.  I am passing on the hero status to Gary.  It is well deserved.  Dominick

Well if you saw the video of Gary giving a filet lesson remember he stuck his finger in the filet and said "here's a bullet hole."  That was a dig at me for my harpooning of that halibut.  I uploaded a bunch of Gary's video and forgot that he videoed me harpooning the fish.  The funny thing was that I hit the fish and hit its backbone, and the harpoon bounced off (tough suckers those butts).  Gary told me that "you have to drive the harpoon, not pet it."  This video is when I did it right.  Dominick

Great job on the harpoon Dominick.  I had to re read this whole thread just now, I wanted to see what size rod you had the tank on for that brute of a butt you all fought.  30-80, I knew the info was in there and reading this over was worth the trip.  This would have made a great full length movie.

I just remembered that one of the fish we released had a big octopus in its mouth.  We don't know if the octopus was eating the bait when the monster butt decided to hit the hook or it regurgitated it after it was hooked.  By the time I grabbed my camera and ran to the back of the boat it was gone.  I never got a look at it.  I will leave it to Wayne and Gary to describe it.  Dominick

BTW, the wider paddles on the star drag made a BIG difference in comfort when spinning down the drag to almost bottom end.
Really like this style of star drags.

Dom, can I ask you what star drag is that.
I hate the stocker cuz they are too thin, Baja Special star drag is pretty nice as well as other models

[/quote]Alex, they were made special for Sal by Three se7ens. I contacted him but he said it is too expensive to produce. I don't see why they can't be produced with thicker material & counter bored in the back to fit the sleeve. They wouldn't need to be tapered in the backside.            Rudy

well, got the answer by Dom and he practically told me the same, lets hope Adam took the idea again with a plan to make it not too expensive for the rest of the normal mortals.

too many good projects still on the R&D with Alan, Tom, Adam, Lee.. I better start to skip and save the money of breakfast tacos to dont miss any of those projects when ready.

God Bless Gary (gstours) in Gustavus, AK!!!!    You SIR are ONE live wire!!!!

Received this from him yesterday, during a busy part of my day, Gary gently reminded me of the finer things in life - Fishing with buddies who like to go fishing!!!!

and his commentary follows!

The Lawyer tells the Broker how it is.. "So What you sain Dommie;  I'm listening butt got my hands full at the moment!!!!   What chew mean we're almost outta bait?😵"

Gary you are kill'n me man!!!!!

Fishing here in SE Alaska during the rainy season - currently, we are in between rain squalls - NOT ;D

Loaded up on yet another hard fighting halibut from Glacier Bay National Park waters.  Private vessel permit fishing only.

Huh??  Everyone has preferences right?   I would never think of driving to work without mag wheels on my pickup truck!

The custom parts we now have are waay better than what our fathers had,  As my daughter says, "times are changing dad,  you got to get with it?"    The above photo is a good example of what worked for me.   Its my first Pro Gear build.   Ive got another in the works.

After posting the above I got the feeling that I was possibly pushing biased reels and their parts.  A boat is just a fishing platform.  A reel is just something to hold the fishing line. ;)   The times you have left to go fishing have a limit.   Play your best cards if you want to win.
Here is a picture of a Hotrodded reel  The Tank,  you know the now famous one Sal gave Dommie,    that assured confidence Yet I had my fingers crossed from the get go! :P

Here is one more blip of halibut fishing with Dom n Wayno of 2017 .   It was in a mislabled file and never before seen .   I,m using it for self taught instructional purposes,  after viewing it several times I got the impression I did not know what I was doing.  Maybe distracted?  Maybe playing Actor boy?  I saw lots of things in a short amount of time and would like to try this fish on another time.
See what you think.  As we had caught some other large fish the law of averages got me.   Shoulda, coulda, might have,  dont ever all come to mind.    This was fun for sure so thats why i,m inviting you to watch.   The fish in the end broke the line by rubbing on the motor or bottom corner of the boat.   Butt thats what makes a good story, right?
