Guys:

Is there a Penn HT 100 Drag washer that can be used to replace the highly pretentious "Dartainiums"??

My Torium 20 is now downgraded to a spare.....It only took a season of hard use to turn this into a pile of corrosoion. While I can always send away for replacement washers, the reel is pretty Ratty. Cleaned the reel after every trip per the Mfg...but I couldnt stop the corrosion from coming on no matter what. There were pits on this reel that dont make sense as they were in areas where there was no dissimilar metals or galvanic action.

Contact Dawn at SmoothDrag.com.  She has a perfect set.  Please remember to order Cal's Univeral and Drag Grease to grease up those washers.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

Thanks...that is an option...but the reel is shot.....All I want to do is get it working again and put it in the bag as a spare/backup reel.

The reel has corrosion issues and I cant seem to stop it. I think it was just a bad lot of reels as my friend has one that was never rinsed and its in better shape than mine after 4 seasons hard use. My frien Kil fishes nonstop and his looks new...I guess the less you clean them the better they last??

Dawn's set will cost about the same as buying HT-100 washers and they fit without reforming them.
Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

none of the available ht-100's will work because they are too thick.  you have to use the much thinner carbontex drags.
send me an email at alantani@yahoo.com for questions!

I have several Toriums and they usually only get a quick freshwater squirt after each trip and I have never experienced the corrosion issues you are talking about. Could there be some source for galvanic corrosion that is causing this besides normal fishing? Just curious.

I have serviced tons of these reels and they do corrode very easily.

Likewise.....same with the Tyrnos series... salt buckets.. a few months of heavy fishing, it sets in and it can't be stopped.
The reel foot and the cover plates are the worst, and the paint starts to bubble off the frame within weeks.
A full pre-service is what I'm showing to our local Shimano dealer as the only honest way to sell those reels for saltwater use.  ;)
Most new ones are back in the shop within a year.
In the long run, I really think folks are better off with a TLD20/30 2sp... with a service upgrade of course.

I have a Torium 16 that I bought back in 2007.  I have it on one of my lighter jigging rods (250 g).  I've caught everything from stripers to tuna and have not experienced any of the corrosion issues mentioned.  I guess it's all a matter of how you take care of them.

That is why I think I got a bad reel ! My friend Ralph doesn't even rinse his and it looks like new.

When I purchased mine I called up shimano and asked some questions about care and maintainance. The service guy told me to clean the reel with isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush and wipe with a soft cloth after each use and that the reel was greased up and ready to roll and it should be fine for at least a year with factory lubrication . All that got me was hydrogen bubbles coming out of the side plates . Gave up on that after 3 trips.

I then started to clean the reel with salt x and non ionic detergent and spray with T-9 Boushield. Still no help! It seemed like the corrosion picked up momentum ! At that pint I did a teardown and the reel was a mess! After just 10 trips the reel was a pile of corrosion the 50 dollar Dartainium drag washers were essentially a pile of graphite dust . Never had a reel that went down hill so fast!

I used the reel for cod n pollack not tuna. These are not the mean fish you guys have. To sum it all up , cod fishing , the fish are fighting for their life, and you are fighting for there flavor .

There is corrosion on the side plates that don't make sense. Hot spots where no galvanic action can occur that corroded from the outside all the way through?

Now it would take about 100 bucks in parts to restore the reel. The previous poster said it best. The reel is only as good as the pre service you give them. The reels need a total teardown greasing and the side plates and spool need a coating of wax.

The inside of the main gear has caked up Dartainium I can't get off. The keyed drag washer is pitted and coated with Dartainiunm. Paint on the frame is bubbled .

My thoughts here is that Torium must be Japanese for "CORROSION".

Yet I can't explain how some have neglected this reel and it's fine!! Can't explain that one!

The NE is tough on reels. Cod fishing is done in allot of snotty weather ! Big seas, reels get pelted with green water, subzero temps! Yet my friends were on the same trips as I , took the reel off the rod and tossed them in the bag , put them back on the rod on the next trip, no issues ! Go figure ??

;D ;D ;D  Good one!

pre-service, pre-service, pre-service...... Malaysia...  :D

A lot of people will never end up exposing their gear to the harsh salt & humid conditions that define our tropical neck of the woods.
It's hard to find a place that's tougher on your gear....

You think even expensive high quality stainless steel door hinges don't rust within a couple months??  Think again.. and swing over to my house to check it out  ;D

I'd say a little corrosion is a small price to pay to live in a paradise like the Fiji Islands.

Paradise has it's perks.. but it all ain't candy either.
But seriously..think about it.. How cool is it when everything you own only lasts half as long...or less as it should?
and takes twice as long to get.... and costs double..... now there's a little more perspective...  ;D ;D

... now can I please get off to work ?    ;D ;D ;D  enjoy your Sunday fellas!

Guys:
My only regret was not finding this board sooner. I noticed that pre-service is pretty much across the board here.

I fish alot of hotrodded Penn reels and Newell's and in FW a lot of what I call disposable spinning reels. Most of the time the reel doesn't get modified until it's fished stock for awhile.

I have both the Saltist and the Corrsion (Torium). Each have pluses and minuses.  Meanwhile Penn sat patiently waiting and watching and then launched The Penn Fathom , which seems to address all of the compromises/flaws of the reels in the same mid price range. From a tutorial on this board I see the reel gets a whole lot of preservice greasing on the inside at the factory and can likely be fished for a short while right out the box.

This is what Erik said he brought up to shimano, the reel needs factory preservice during assembly. And they need to ditch those pretentious Dartanium drag washers! Sheesh!

I think Dartainium must be Japanese for Pencil Lead.
