Penn / Penn 700 or.....a hybrid??
Last post by Marlinmate - November 11, 2025, 07:14:39 PM
Got this reel in the shop.
Side plate says 700. But it doesn't have part #21 - bearing cover
It has a 1 piece handle.
It also has a rubber bumper...in a coil/spring....Not a cup??
It has a bearing retainer part #21a from a 704.
Do I have a hybrid or a very early 700?

Quote from: Keta on April 28, 2024, 04:32:08 PMI occasionally strip my reels and repack the line and have seen wavy line on the spool about 1/2 way down and assume it is caused by loose spooling.

With reference to the thread "Shimano Sienna spool/drag?":

That wavy line and how it forms seems key to understanding how the problem develops.  Does the waviness start at the bottom and work its way up, or start at the top and work its way down?

Quote from: JasonGotaProblem on November 10, 2025, 07:54:37 PMBut that screw I described above still felt funny going in and scared me so I resolved to avoid issues and not open the reel again until I need to. Sucks to break something trying to improve it.

Whether or not there are screws threaded directly into plastic without a metal insert should be a major consideration when selecting a reel.  Every time a metal screw is snugged up in a plastic hole the plastic threads are further deformed.  With a short, or even regular, service interval the threads fail.  PEEK is the only plastic I know that can withstand this sort of abuse, but PEEK is too expensive to use for making fishing reels.

Should the drag washers be dry or lightly greased? I usually grease with Cal's, but thought I read somewhere that Accurate recommends dry. Never mind: found an old post by Alan that recommended greasing, so grease it is.

I use saliva since it's a simple and consistent tag along whenever I'm out fishing.  ;D

I notice a video online that goes thru a breakdown of a Heddon 185 Convertible; perhaps this is similar to the 180?  Mentions the AR and at least one other spring inside.  Search for 'Heddon 180 reel" and the vid is by 'Fish-N-Thingz".  I did not watch the whole vid, but he shows a pic of the AR spring at around the 10 min. mark of the vid.
