Post by: ksong on May 15, 2021, 11:18:59 AM
We just returned from Panama Mothership trip.
10 anglers on 3 boats tagged 125 tuna.
It was great trip and we booked next year already.

Nice conditions there!

How do the guys rig their hooks, Singles or trebles?

Our experience here is that Tuna caught on a surface lure often don't hook up and also regularly come off the hook while fighting.

If you catch them on an Iron then no problem.

e use single hooks as we plan to catch and release.
When you use treble hooks, you tend to get more hookups, but you lose more.

Great pictures!
That's one whopping big Mahi.
Questions; which airport?
What species of Tuna? The pectorals, anal & dorsal fins look kinda short for a Yellowfin, but have the right color, and the fish have the size...
What about them big pink Snapper lookin critters?

They are yft.  You fly from Panama City to David, Panama. It is about 45 minutes flight. You can drive to the lodge from Panama City and it takes about 6 hours.

You never know what to expect next in Panama.  While Fred reeled in 40 lb tuna to the surface, huge blue marlin estimated 700 lb - 800 lb showed up and tried to eat the tuna.  Capt Carlos hurriedly set up marlin rig. He put the tuna on the hook of marlin rod and threw the tuna into the water.  Then marlin ate it. Capt Carlos ran the boat hard to set the hook. Marlin was on !  It jumped twice and unfortunately broke the line.
It would have been fantastic fight if  the line didn't break.

That is a no joke Dorado!

Any time spent tied into a marlin is worth it.

Looks like a great trip
