Post by: krauhs1 on December 16, 2011, 10:49:03 PM
Hello Alan, I was looking a a Pro- Gear Reel that I have and it is a GR 3500.
It needs some 5-40 Heli-coils put in it.
Do you repair striped Threads on these reels?

5-40 is very small for heli coil. You might just try the beer can trick. cut a piece of aluminum shim stock to go in the stripped hole and screw in the fastener. Beer can is a good source for the shim stock. Some will use wire but be careful of the copper to aluminum as it will corrode if it gets wet.

If t it is stripped 'bad' then tap it to the next size thread. Some times you will need to reduce the size of the fastener head. Chuck in a drill and grind or use a lath to do this.

You should be able to find a kit on Mcmaster.com for the 5-40, should run you under $40 US.
Good luck.

Thank you for the helpful replies. Having a machining back ground leads me to do most anything (this is where I get into trouble)
Anywhy I have gave it consideration.I should go for it. Thank you. Mark.
