Title: Hello.....New to the site but not to penn reels
Post by: Maxed Out on February 14, 2012, 01:38:22 AM
Hello everyone, I am a "newbie" here and am a big Alan Tani fan.

I've been around penn reels for almost 50 years. My dad owned a tackle shop starting in 1960 and was a huge penn dealer, and here in the pacific nortwest penn reels were the most widely used reel of choice for many years and are still fairly popular. My dad got me involved in penn reels & before he passed away 15 years ago I was prepped by him to pass me the torch. I love restoring/buying/selling and collecting old penns and also fish with many of them to this day.

I've read a few threads on here, but still have a many to read and I'm certain that I'll learn a lot along the way.

Tight Lines, Ted

P.S. My username is "Max Doubt" but it is a name you need to sound out. Say it out loud and you'll get the true meaning......."maxed out"

Here we go a Maxed out Newbie.  It looks like he got the bug when he was a kid.  Good to have you aboard.  I own about 20 reels.  All Penns.  You will find many Penn fans on this site.  Actually there are only two kinds of reel men.  Those that own Penns and those that wish they owned Penns.  ::)  Dominick

Welcome Ted.  Nice avitar.  We all have a long way to go, but with the help of each other, we are all getting better and sharpening our knives.

Nessie, nice...Your daughter is beautiful.  I have to look her up when I get up to Vancouver, WA.   ;)  The fish, WOW.  I'm so getting hungry for some cold smoked steelies and salmon.

I'm north of Seattle about 30 minutes (1 hour during high traffic volume). I don't fish the rivers, I'm strictly a saltwater angler. My killing grounds are Puget Sound, Westport, LaPush, Neah Bay, west coast Canada, & San Juan islands. I fill my freezer with ling cod, halibut, king and coho salmon, and albacore tuna....BTW, thanks for the fish picks, very nice......Here is a pic of my fish killing machine.

Welcome aboard Max!  Love the fish slaying machine... what size is she?  Looks like she can take a licking and keep on ticking.  If you're a Penn man you will feel right at home here with the rest of us "Penn Men."  Looking forward to learning some tricks of the trade from ya.

Nessie,
Nice pics... I love the fight of a steelie, though never caught one in a river just on Lake Michigan... they must go bananas in that shallower water, huh?!

[Dom, we will learn a lot from Ted. When it comes to Penn, he's very knowlegeable. Ted has already taught me quite a bit in the past, he's an old friend.
[/quote]

OK Sal, my secret is out so I may as well show off a few of the truly collector penns from my collection.

1st is a set of teal green penn reels from 1957 all new in original boxes. a green 109, #9, & 209

2nd is a ultra rare penn 109 all red reel that sold on EBAY for $304.00. That's right, a 109 that sold for $304.00. I had the only 4 all red 109's known to exsist.

Here's one you might recognize Sal. ...A 114H 1982 anniversary model with the rare red aluminum spool and solid chrome spacer bars.

I had one brand new in the box that sold to a really good friend/collector from Virginia....He gladly paid $250.00 for it. Kinda wish I'da kept that one.

By the looks of those photos.... I should have known he was your friend, Sal.

Sal, Alan, and all the other usual suspects have taught me so much it's amazing... I look forward to some more Penn expertise.
Beautiful reels, let me know when you're ready to sell some Senators (after Sal of course;)
Thanks for sharing,
Dom

Dom, that 114HL is the reel that you pulled away from, when I told you that a friend was bidding on it. This was about a year ago.
You're a good man Dom ;).

Hey! Look at you guys.  A bunch of show-offs.  What good is having a reel in a box.  Check out the 114HL on the workbench.
Now check out the 114HL in action.  My fishing buddy Wayne is putting on one of Dawns aluminum handles.  When it is finished, I'll post a picture.  I have to give Wayne credit for the pictures.  I take him along to take pictures.  Otherwise I don't get in the pictures.  ;D .  All kidding aside, Wayne was on our team for the 2011 Tuna Tournament in Cabo.  He is an avid fisherman, although he gets excited with a 6 inch trout (that's a little weird).  Dominick

Dominick,
That chair looks like a great platform to fish from... can you get a shave and shampoo in that thing, too? :o
You gotta find those blinging chrome cross bars for that 114hl to go with those Hawaiian shirts I always see you in ;D

Dom:  Read the quote above the picture.  I received the handle from Dawn a couple of months ago.  I gave it to Wayne to do.  He is just getting into rebuilding and maintaining reels so he wanted the experience.  One of these days he'll get to it.  That's a hint Wayne. Dominick

Dominick,
Those cross bars ain't easy to find... I hope ya got a hook up for 'em!  I paid $35 bucks for the pair last year, but haven't ever found more for sale... does Wayne have a hook?  I do think Dawn's handle would look sweet on there, too!

Dom,
Time for me to report in!  I have taken your hint!  AND I'M WORKING ON!
On Saturday, I removed the handle from the Penn 114, in anticipation of the installation of Dawn's handle.
Photo Attached!
Mechanically Minded does skip a generation.  My Father, God rest his soul, did rebuild engines and transmissions, washing machines and kitchen mixers.  My sons can rebuild computers and have them running better and faster than before.
But for me, when I change the spark plug on my lawn mower, there is a small box of left over parts!  Really.
El Pescador!

;DYes, I mooch for halibut and ling cod but those rods in the picture do have single action knucklebusters for salmon, which I use with my downriggers. Makes for a lot of fun, and north of the border in BC that is the norm......I will mooch for salmon, but only 600 miles north on the west coast of Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands)

Love seeing the pics of the power handle on the 114H.

BTW, thanks to everybody who has welcomed me to the world of Alan Tani........If any of you hard core anglers ever make it up my way I would gladly take you out to get a line wet. I mostly do salmon here in puget sound or out off the coast in Westport from mid July thru early October, with a few trips for albacore mixed in during August and September.......Thanks again.

Does anyone work for a living???  I find it hard to hop online during the working day.  Unlike Dom, whom is enjoying the success of his long and storied legal career, I'm still working for a living.  Still in the 'Capital Appreciation' mode; when I earn money (capital), I appreciate it!
Bryan and Alto Mare, thank you for the very kind words of encouragement!  I'll keep trying at this reel repair business.

Rob, if you have an extra handle for a 114H (24-57), may I purchase one from you???  I just rebuilt a 114 (2.1:1 gear ratio) and love to upgrade to a 24-57 handle; a bit longer handle throw than the current 24-114 on the reel!

Dom, NO loctite, need to stop by and put some on.  And did not set the spring for the double dog, but did do the hokie pokie!
I do appreciate all the nice words for the handle install, this is my 3rd attempt to anything regarding reel repair.  Last Memorial Day weekend, Dom introducted me to this website, and that was my first attempt on Alan Tani-izing a Diawa Sealine 27H, purchased for $15 on CL.  ONLY took me 2 1/2 hours to put together the Set Plate to the right side plate.  Needed to consult with a physician for elevated Blood Pressure!

Would love to come up Ted.  The last time I was up there was to test ride my boat (Bellingham).  We went all over.  I though we were going to run out of fuel.  Spent about 4 hours test riding among the islands.  I was so iching to do some fishing as a part of the test ride.  We'll see.  Family issues arising in Hawaii, so we'll see.

Sounds good Bryan.........Keep me posted.

I fish the San Juans (where you test drove your boat), and it is amazing scenery there as well as great fishing. I also fish the protected waters of puget sound, but my favorite stomping grounds are in the ocean, either westport or neah bay. I'm north of the border in mid August for a week, but anytime From early july thru end of August (except when I'm in Canada) it is all game on for big kings and I would consider it a privilage to have either you or Alan or both onboard for some NW style fishing and a few cold ones to boot.

Hope all is well with the family Bryan.

Tight Lines, Ted
