I have used hem and had great results. The slicing knife point on the edge seems to keep the dust down.

Hi guys,
I've been using these for a couple of years:

and these:

Also these for small i.d:

For lever drags and custom washers - braid scissors or a craft knife.

No dust - no problem!

This is what I use and it works fantastic. I put the CF sheet on a delrin block and use a 4 lb hammer for one tap on the tool and a CF drag washer is made.

Mel,
IMHO the most important things about punches/wad cutters are (in no particular order)
A centering point to enable concentric inside and outside diameters
A good range of sizes
Quality tool steel - cheap crap will blunt after very few cf washers

Another useful workshop tool is a small arbor press - instead of wacking a cutter with a hammer/mallet you simply line up the cutter and 'press'!
It's also useful for pressing bearings in or out (particularly AR bearings).
One like this

That punch set was a little pricey but it has paid for itself already and I like the fact that I can cut so many different sizes easily with the ID and OD cut at the same time.

Every time that I have used a tool that needed to be hit with a hammer I used a wood 4X4 & used the end grain of the wood. It will never dull the cutter that way.

I use individual wad punches but they are expensive at a starting point of $30.00. I have about 8 different ones.

I'm curious, where do you find the sheets of C/F material?
Thanks for any help.

There are many options John.
It really depends on the thickness you want. this Guy on ebay has some good deals.

Dawn at smooth drag sell sheets I believe.
Wallace sells some thin sheet on here as well.

for odd sizes like 1.4 mm just glue 2 x .7 sheets
make sure they are laminated thats all, glue wont seep through.

Update for any arbor press users. If the ram of your press has a hole in the end (to locate pegs etc.) try popping a suitably sized neodymium magnet in there. Mine had no hole so I removed it from the press and drilled a 6mm hole in the end - deep enough for 2 6x6mm magnets (2 to increase the magnetic force) - drill the hole a thou or so over depth so the magnet isn't crushed ;)
This will now hold punches, sockets (for ar bearings), drifts and pins etc. This saves having to do the 3 handed juggling trick that usually happens ;D

Punch held in place by the magnet alone - and close-up of magnet.

What kind of glue is suitable for gluing CF in this application?  Will it survive the heat buildup?

For the last 6 months or so I have been using the Mayhew 27 punch kit plus on of their small metric kits. They are very expensive but work great.

I also use a 3 ton bench press mounted about 18" off the floor. I can punch them with one hand on the handle bar. I need it low and such a big press b/c I do it from my wheelchair.

I'll post some pictures if I ever remember.

I only use it for reels I don't have kits for. I get most all of mine from Dawn at Smooth Drag.
