Title: Saltist 30H Springy Spool
Post by: Walt on March 28, 2014, 07:38:17 PM
RE: Daiwa Saltist, 30 H, 6.4:1 gearing
Took this reel to the factory repair center for the specific task of repairing
the springing action in the reel spool. When the reel is in the retrieve mode the
spool will spring forward d about 10 degrees before locking up and start pulling drag. If tension is released
the spool will spring back to its original location.
At first I  thought the AR bearing was failing but  Daiwa replaced all bearings including the AR Bearing
and the problem is still there. Daiwa said that is all they could do and I would have to live with it.
Have never seen any reel do this.

Any input on the cause of the springing action in the spool will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Walt

PS: and no.... the spectra is not slipping on the spool.

The BG 30H and the older STT 30H are 6:1 but the older Saltist STT 30TH has a 6.4:1 so I guess this is the reel your talking about? It's the taller narrow version with the funky bent clamp screws, right?

As far as the spool moving forward a bit before catching this could be that when the reel is put into gear the pin on the spools shaft is not meshing perfectly with the slots knotched in the pinion. The pin must slide forward and lock into the pinion before grabbing and in turn making drag but this is pretty normal on star drag reels. Sometimes the two line up perfectly when putting the reel into gear other times the shafts pin needs to slide forward to lock into place.

As far as the spool moving backward when taking it out of gear thats different. The lever moves the eccentric jack (Diawa calls it a Yoke PLT) which lifts the yoke which in turn lifts the pinion. Lifting the pinion will make the main gear move backwards at bit because of how the gears are cut, helical (sp?) I know with some reels you need to take some pressure off of the spool/line to move the lever easily as the ARB does not want to let gears cut this way move the spool backwards when the lever is taken out of gear when there is pressure on the line/spool.

Edit: If the handle has no movement backwards at all when the reel is in gear the ARB should be fine. If the handle does move back a bit then then stop you have a bad ARB and the ABU style dogs are whats making the anti reverse work. Those dogs are only a backup if the ARB does fail and should not be used for full time anti reverse.

Thanks Mark,
Yes the reel is the older 6.4:1 gearing.
But I don't think I was clear on the problem.
Tighten the drag down to 8 pounds. Put the reel in gear and pull on the line
the spool will rotate forward about 10 degrees without the drag slipping and if
you let up on the line pressure the spool will spring back to its original position.
It's only when more then 8 pounds of pull is  put on the line that the spool will
rotate forward about 10 degrees without the drag slipping once past that point the
drag will start slipping.
