Title: Newell P-220 or P-332 ?
Post by: russ1962 on May 04, 2014, 06:26:25 PM
I recently got a good used Black Steel G670 rod to use for 30lb class. Currently I have it paired with a P-332.
Would a P-220 with upgraded drags be sufficient for 30lb class?

The reel can handle it just fine. Our captain and one of the mates use their 229s for cobia and use 40 lb mono. I think 30 will cast better though. You can't hurt the reel. Everything inside is just like the 440 in a small frame.

Does the P-220 hold enough line for your intended use?

It should for local inshore. I'm thinking that I can probably get at least 300 yards of 50lb Spectra on it and tie on a lighter topshot.

A 229 is just 1/2" wider than the 220 & can hold more line.

Russ, you'd be fine with 30 or 40 since it would only be a topshot. 300 yds of spectra could easily be used offshore for the 20-50 lb. albies, yft, bft etc. If I bring my P220 on the 1-3 dayers, I use it with 12-15# mono only and maybe get about 225 yds or so. The only way you'll get 200 yds of 20# is if you use tournament grade mono.
