Title: drag washer cutting tools.
Post by: Geoff on May 11, 2014, 12:08:57 AM
Hi Alan, i'm keen to start cutting out drag washers from sheets of HT100. Where can I buy that from? Also,I looked up hole punching tools, many sets available, and would like to know what would be a recommended/maximum/outside diameter, hole punch I'd need?  ???

if you are cutting round washers, a pair of scissors are all you need.  for the ID, just use once of the eared metal washer scored with a pick or knife point.  you can drill it call slowly or dremel it all.  Or you can buy the hollow punch tool kit from harbor freight and punch it out.

I used a hole punch that I am borrowing from Alan and my largest OD is 2" and it's still not enough.  I need something larger.  I have to see about buying a set and additionally OD probably up to 3"

Thanks mate. I'll look into it. You know where to get HT100 sheets from? If I cant get that, there's no need to buy a good punch set!!   ???

You might be better off with laminated sheets, I get mine from this seller, his name is Erik:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Carbon-Fiber-Drag-Sheet-Fishing-Reel-Upgrade-/121243650722?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item1c3aaf4aa2
There is also a member here  that might still be selling sheets, his mane on the site is Wallacewt.
I have tested the ones at the top from Erik many times and do recommend them, I don't know much about the ones that my buddy Wallace is selling.
Do some homework on your own and chose whatever you like.

Look at the Mayhew gasket cutting kits. I love the one that I have and I got the metric which seemed to match the sizes that I wanted to cut the best. Figure out what you want to cut and go from there.

I have modified some with a simple rat tail file to make them what I had.

I am looking at cutting my own washes and came across this product. It will cut id and od at the same time! it also has a compass cutter which I think would be good for eared washers as you just have to skip ears and trim when finished. I am thinking of getting a couple of cutters and a chuck to start. the set is a bit expensive for me right now

Hey Harry, I use many different sizes, from .5mm to 1.4mm. Yes it is a good idea to use Cal's on all carbon fiber washers.

I just took apart two 113s that had factory dry HT100s and apparently had gotten wet and the HT100 and metal washers were all rusted together. x2 on using Cals which should waterproof the drags while making them smooth.

The Boehm double wad punch looks impressive. I use wad punches and have to buy a separate one for each size and they are expensive. I work on allot of spinning reels cutting Carbomtex sheets. I can punch out 17mm, 21mm, and 25mm for the shimano spinners really fast. The Shimano and other spinners that have a small spool shaft are very easy to cut the little center hole by hand with a Unibit.

The drag washers for conventional reels are easy to punch out the OD but getting the center hole just right is a pain. I use a high speed dremel bit while holding the washers against the metal washer. Now I just buy them from Dawn at Smooth Drag.

the Bohem punches can also be bought seperately but if you add it up it is even more expensive.
I think the compass cutter would be good for large eared washers as you could skip cut and form ears with scissors. At the moment i have a lot of little penn ones to do. I have found a steel pipe with ID of 20.2mm
which i have sharpened. I works well I just drive it with a large rubber maul into end grain timber. I have been clamping the 20mm disks into an old penn 85 gear with an appropriate sized nut and drilling with a 10mm bit.
I then hold all together and clean up on 120g sandpaper for outside and a chainsaw file for inside. Only ones that have been a bit rough have been when I have been greedy and tryed to punch to close. I have sanded these and used them under the gears. In New Zealand we dont have a company like Smoothdrag and I love to tinker. I have converted two reels so far for less than $10 nz

I'm going to give this punch set a try. Hand cutting the larger Senator drags can take some time. This set will work up to the 12/0. I like the center punch too, so I can punch it out with a reference point.

Thats a good price. I just returned a similar one to our local enginering supplier unused cost me $40 NZ (80c to us $) I was worried that the large taper on the small punches wouldn't cut a neat inner hole. or stretch it. A Bit of steel pipe works so those should be sweet ;)
I think a nice tight end grain block of wood is Important. Lets the punch through material into a solid backing smooth and evenly. Good luck look forward to hearing how it goes.

Daron, I have the same set. It works, but I had to sharpen some of the cutters. I put the handle in a chuck and used some cheap diamond plates to sharpen the cutters.

Daron,
I bought a cheap set at Harbor Freights---they had to be sharpened also.  I did not have much in the way of tools with me--I was in Baja at the time.  Another tip that I got from someone on this website is to put a light layer of grease on the cf sheet before punching out the washers.  I used  a little Cals.  Worked well!!  ;D

Thanks for that tip Tom. I will use that as well. I just have a hard time paying $300 and up for some sharpened pieces of metal that I am going to hit with a Hammer! ::)
I am going to town on some 12/0 washers when I get this punch set. ;)

Well, my $20 punch set came, and I started to punch out some washers, I started with some Delrin, and it was breaking them. I have some small diamond bits from a buddy and chucked one up in the dremel and put an edge on them that would actually cut without breaking them.
I had to sharpen them after a couple of cuts, but once I got the hang of it, I punched 5 complete sets of 12/0 drag washers with the Delrin under gear washer. I would have kept going, but I ran out of cf to punch. Well worth the $20 spot and already paid for itself. ;)
I did it in about 2 hours instead of dremeling each one that would have taken much longer. I ended up using a different punch for the id that I already had instead of switching the cutters.

Looking good.
I go through enough 12 and 14/0 stock washers where I might want to consider the investment.  I was thinking of getting an ultrasonic cleaner first though.

I do need to cut 2 sets of hex gear washers.  Guess I need a laminated CF sheet.  Who sells them on Ebay again?

Got the punching kit and the 8X12 in 1.2mm.  Wonder if punching for HEX set will help?  Just Dremel off the extra to shape of a template?  Did you try greasing em up first too?  Any ideas where I can grab sharpening bits for the Dremel?

These would last a long time:

or these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/130943204727?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
All drags in my reels are laminated, the seller that Daron mentioned is a good one...no need to mention my name.
As for punching, I haven't had any luck using cutters as Daron mentioned, even after sharpening the tip. The leather punch he's showing does do a good job, I have a few of those.
These are what I use:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/5pc-Disc-Cutter-w-Punch-Set-1-2-5-8-3-4-7-8-1-Jewelers-Set-Round-Cutting-J-/271519965029?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f37d9df65
I could punch out a couple of dozen in just a minute, the problem is that you'll need to use a dremel for the center hole, I just can't get them to line up straight if trying with the punch.
There are some better cutters out there, but are not cheap. Dwight ( Newell Nut ) has some nice ones that will cut the OD & ID with one punch.
The punch I'm showing isn't the exact one, mine goes up to 1.5", I place it on a towel on a concrete floor and go at it.
Sal

I just cut some Delrin and realized that the punch only goes up to 1", not 1.5"

This punch kit does a very good job on Carbon Fiber and Delrin.

These here are from Harbor Freight and don't do as goo of a job

You might want to consider the ones above, I believe mine was $34.99.

Keep in mind Dawn from SmoothDrags has most of these washers already cut at a very good price.

Sal,
I know these cutters are inferior to the ones like you and Dwight use, but with a little practice, they work for me. The first couple I tried to cut, It either didn't go all the way through, or my center hole was off. My neighbor had just cut down a tree, so I knew one of those logs would make an excellent work top for punching, so didn't have to use the floor. I would hit the punch with the diamond bit real quick after a couple cuts to keep them sharp, The quality of the steel is why they are $20. To get the center hole right, I would use an old drag washer on top and line it up, then punch it out with one good tap. It was nice not using the dremel on any of these.

I didn't use any grease John. What worked out best for me with the hex drags, was using a template out of a credit card That fit in the gear perfect. I wanted to keep the edges sharp. I did all the shaping with a sanding drum on a dremel after cutting out with scissors.

No Daron, my punch are no way close to Dwight's, I believe his were around $200. You are doing ok with yours, just keep an eye on the edge, if it's too jagged I would be cautious using them.
Abut the hex cut, I personally do not trust them, I told Alan Chui to get me sharp corners, but that was the best they could do. The gears are a little rounded at the corners, this will help the washer slip. I made mine a little sharper using a dremel, but it's a lot of work. On the other hand, Lee's inserts are great.

I bought 2 sets of the cheap cutters as shown. Now all I use are individual wad cutters I buy on Amazon. They are from Germany, expensive, but work great and I never had to sharpen them. The one for the 114H reels was $35.00.

Keith, If I serviced as many reels as you do, I would buy good cutters too. I mainly just make washers for my reels or maybe a friend or two. I have the cheap set like Daron. If I need other sizes I will buy individual quality cutters. A carbon fiber washer lasts a long time in my reels. The cheap cutters are ok for someone like me but for someone in the reel repair business I would recommend  quality tools.  Bob

You're absolutely right Bob, most would do just fine with the cutters that Daron is showing. I purchased a set of these for $14 a year ago, these never need sharpening.

I would recommend these for guys that don't have any, mine were made in Germany and go up to 1.5".
One hit with the hammer on a piece of wood and that's all it takes.

Are we liking it better than the carbon fiber, and if so, which Senators deserve the delrin treatment?
Is it just for the big dogs?
